Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty and Dominique McElligott will all reprise their roles for the Emmy-nominated show.

In December, an animated spin-off series of the show called Diabolical was announced, and will also receive a 2022 release.

The news was shared by Amazon Prime Video via a recorded message from Karl Urban during the CCXP Worlds 2021 panels.

Awkwafina, Garth Ennis, Eliot Glazer, Ilana Glazer, Evan Goldberg, Rogen, Simon Racioppa, Justin Roiland, Ben Bayouth, Andy Samberg and Aisha Tyler are all said to be involved in the forthcoming project.

Executive producers and writers Rogen and Goldberg said: “Ever since we saw the animated film The Animatrix, a series of short animated films set in the universe of The Matrix, we’ve wanted to rip it off. Today that dream has come true.”

‘Scream’ first reactions: “Wes would be proud”

“My horror heart is so full”

Early reactions have come in for Scream, the fifth entry in the slasher movie franchise, and have largely hailed the film a success.

The new chapter sees the original films’ core cast reprise their roles, with Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette all returning to face off against the notorious masked serial killer Ghostface.

An official synopsis reads: “Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.”

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who last worked together on horror Ready Or Not, have taken over from iconic director Wes Craven, who died in 2015. According to initial feedback from critics, the pair have honoured the late filmmaker’s groundbreaking work.

“All I can say is WOW and EPIC. Wes would be proud,” tweeted TV journalist Tommy DiDario.

“Brutal kills, fun mystery & both the legacy cast & newbies were great. Wes would be proud,” wrote another fan.

Meanwhile, horror journalist Meagan Navarro hailed the film “a razor sharp, bloody introspection on the genre and Wes Craven’s legacy. All the feels and one hell of a genre start to 2022. My horror heart is so full.”

Not all reactions were positive. While Fangoria editor Ariel Fisher called the film “fun”, she also felt disappointed. “The stakes and characters feel thin, and some strange decisions are made. Some major missed opportunities here,” she tweeted.

However, journalist and author Joel Meares called the film “scary (and funny) as hell.”

“If this franchise means something to you — and it means so damn much to me — you will leave satisfied, moved, and wanting more,” he wrote.

Scream will be released in cinemas on January 14, 2022.

James Corden is the latest Hollywood name to test positive for COVID-19, as he confirmed via social media.

The Late Late Show host took to Instagram to reveal the news. “I just tested positive for covid 19,” he wrote. “I’m fully vaccinated, boosted, and because of this, am fortunate enough to say I feel completely fine.”

Corden will not be hosting episodes of the talk show this week while he recovers. The news of his diagnosis comes just days after fellow talk show hosts Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon also tested positive for COVID-19.

“The bad news is, I tested positive for COVID (thanks, 2022!) the good news is, I feel fine (thanks vaccines and booster!)” tweeted Meyers on January 4. His shows were also cancelled this week until he was clear of the virus.

Fallon also took to Instagram to confirm that his symptoms were mild thanks to his vaccination.

“Hey guys, on the first day of our holiday break I tested positive for Covid. I was vaccinated and boostered which made me lucky enough to only have mild symptoms.”

He added: “Thank you to the doctors and nurses who work so hard around the clock to get everyone vaxxed.”

You can see Corden’s post below:

Elsewhere, Hugh Jackman announced via social media that he had tested positive for the virus. Sharing a video, he described some of his symptoms, which he said was “like a cold – I have scratchy throat and a bit of a runny nose”.

BTS members RM, Jin and Suga all tested positive for the virus last month, while Bryan Adams revealed in November that he had contracted Coronavirus for the second time.

Meanwhile, Sundance film festival has ditched the in-person element of its 2022 programme as Omricron cases continue to rise.

A hybrid version of the festival was due to kick off from January 20, with guests due to travel into Park City, Utah, to attend film screenings and in-person events.

However, with recent reports revealing that there were 14,700 newly reported COVID-19 cases in Utah, the festival’s organisers made the decision on Wednesday (January 5) to pull all physical gatherings.

He was hailed as one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age

Sir Sidney Poitier, who was the first Black man to win the Best Actor Oscar, has died aged 94.

The actor, who also worked as a filmmaker, activist and ambassador, was confirmed to have passed away by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Bahamas, Fred Mitchell (via The Guardian).

“We’ve lost a great a Bahamian and I’ve lost a personal friend,” Mitchell said.

Poitier’s cause of death has yet to be confirmed.

Bahamas Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper said he was “conflicted with great sadness and a sense of celebration when I learned of the passing of Sir Sidney Poitier”.

“Sadness that he would no longer be here to tell him how much he means to us, but celebration that he did so much to show the world that those from the humblest beginnings can change the world and that we gave him his flowers while he was with us.

“We have lost an icon; a hero, a mentor, a fighter, a national treasure.”

Poitier won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1964 for Lilies Of The Field. Additionally, he was nominated for a further two Oscars, 10 Golden Globes and six BAFTAs. He was hailed as one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

During an expansive career, Poitier starred in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and To Sir, With Love.

Off screen, he was awarded a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama in 2009.

Tributes have began to flood in from Hollywood. “Sidney Poitier. What a landmark actor. One of a kind. What a beautiful, gracious, warm, genuinely regal man. RIP, Sir. With love,” tweeted James Bond actor Jeffrey Wright.

“Sidney Poitier. An absolute legend. One of the greats,” wrote Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

‘Derry Girls’: Jamie-Lee O’Donnell teases “absolute madness” for season 3

Nicola Coughlan, meanwhile, spoke of some “brilliant” upcoming storylines

Derry Girls actor Jamie-Lee O’Donnell has promised that there will be “loads of absolute madness” in the third and final season of the show.

Filming on the Channel 4 season has now wrapped, although a release date has yet to be confirmed.

Although O’Donnell can’t reveal much about her final outing as her character Michelle, she does promise a new level of maturity from Michelle and her drama peers.

“I think that it’s nice to note that we are growing up slightly, it’s a nice thing to end on,” she told NME. “Of course, there’s still loads of absolute madness.”

Additionally, she says that the finale will maintain the show’s sense of realism.

“You have to remember that these are working-class girls,” she said. “They don’t have money for adventures. The way that Lisa [McGee, the show’s creator and writer] keeps them true to their backgrounds is genius.”

Elsewhere, O’Donnell’s co-star Nicola Coughlan has discussed the “brilliant” storylines from the show’s upcoming season.

“They’re so brilliant, which doesn’t surprise me,” she told the Belfast Telegraph. “She’s just incredible – but it made me want to do it right now. But we also want to do the best version of the show we can.

“By hell or high water, we all want to make it work – if they said we could go tomorrow, trust me, we would all be there.”

Talk of a Derry Girls movie has been had with the show’s creator Lisa McGee. “For a while I didn’t know if it would work but now an idea is starting to vaguely form in my head,” she said. “So after series three I’ll think about that a bit more.”

Peter Sarsgaard opens up about his “near miss” with opiates

The actor appears in ‘Dopesick’, which spotlight’s America’s opioid crisis

The post Peter Sarsgaard opens up about his “near miss” with opiates appeared first on NME.

NME

Peter Sarsgaard has revealed that he had “a near miss” with opiates after they were offered to him when there was “50/50 chance” of him taking them.

Sarsgaard appears in the Disney+ mini-series Dopesick, which spotlights the opioid crisis via the sinister rise of OxyContin, as well as the damage it continues to do to the US’s most neglected communities.

“I’ve had a near miss with it, where I was offered it once at a time in my life where there was a 50/50 chance whether I was going to put that thing in my mouth,” he told NME.

“Luckily, I didn’t. I grew up with everybody saying ‘don’t touch anything that is in this family of drugs ever’ and that was very effective. So there was for me, no cocaine, heroin, PCP… anything like that.

“Nothing that has been refined to the point where it’s like a chemical. Things in nature tend to grow at a potency that if you happen to eat it, you’re not going to die immediately!”

When asked if he believed that the opioid crisis was improving in the US, Sarsgaard replied: “I think for right now, we’re in a pretty terrible place. It is not getting better.”

His own family’s battles with prescription medication addiction also provoked Sarsgaard to cover the crisis in a 2016 docuseries America Divided, where he spoke in an episode called ‘The Epidemic’.

Booksmart star Kaitlyn Dever stars alongside Sarsgaard in Dopesick. “I was infuriated. I was angry. I was heartbroken,” she told NME about reading the show’s script for the first time.

“I can speak for a lot of my friends, too – we knew the opioid crisis existed but really little beyond that. It’s important that people know the truth.”

Apple Studios are backing the project, and whereas no plot details have been announced at this time, the script will be produced by The Current War screenwriter Michael Mitnick.

Hepburn, one of the most famed actors of her generation, reached EGOT status, having earned Emmy, Oscar, Tony and Grammy awards before passing away in 1993. She additionally received accolades for her ongoing humanitarian work.

Mara has been nominated for two Oscars for her roles in the US adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Carol. Recently, Mara was reunited with Carol star Cate Blanchett in Guillermo del Toro’s latest film Nightmare Alley.

Luca Guadagnino has multiple projects in development alongside his Hepburn biopic including new A24 feature Bones & All starring Timothée Chalamet and a remake of Lord Of The Flies.

Most recently, he was at the helm of limited series We Are Who We Are, a coming-of-age story which starred Jack Dylan Grazer, Jordan Kristine Seamón, Chloé Sevigny and Francesa Scorsese.

In a four-star review of We Are Who We AreNME wrote: “At times, We Are Who We Are can feel frustrating and a little unfocused, but in a way, this only makes it truer to teenage life.

In December, he directed John C. Reilly as Santa in a festive short called O Night Divine, which also stars Hereditary‘s Alex Wolff. The film sees both actors singing and working alongside a score by frequent Pedro Almodóvar collaborator Alberto Iglesias.

Sundance 2022 removes in-person programme amidst COVID-19 surge

“This was a difficult decision to make”

The post Sundance 2022 removes in-person programme amidst COVID-19 surge appeared first on NME.

NME

Sundance film festival has ditched the in-person element of its 2022 programme as Omricron cases continue to rise.

“Despite the most ambitious protocols, the Omicron variant with its unexpectedly high transmissibility rates is pushing the limits of health safety, travel and other infrastructures across the country,” said the festival via a statement.

It continued: “This was a difficult decision to make. As a nonprofit, our Sundance spirit is in making something work against the odds.

“But with case numbers forecasted to peak in our host community the week of the festival we cannot knowingly put our staff and community at risk.”

The festival’s online 2021 edition was estimated to have garnered 600,000 views, and according to Deadline, organisers are optimistic that that number will rise in 2022.

Sundance CEO Keri Putnam said in a statement at the time: “It’s been rewarding to see the way adventurous audiences everywhere engaged with our programme and platform, and of course we are delighted to have met and even exceeded our goal of expanding the reach and community for independent film in this challenging year.

Among the premieres at this year’s Sundance will be Netflix‘s Kanye West documentary Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy.

The three-part Jeen-Yuhs was directed by filmmakers Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and Chike Ozah and was initially revealed by Netflix back in September alongside footage of West rapping his ‘The College Dropout’ track ‘Two Words’ alongside Yasiin Bey (Mos Def).
