Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd has urged people to stop trying to work out the real-life identity of his stalker portrayed in his new Netflix series.

Gadd plays the lead role of Donny in the show, which portrays his experience of being stalked by a woman.

The show has gone viral since airing and has topped Netflix’s viewing chart since its release. On social media, however, the show has sparked a wealth of internet sleuths who are claiming to have worked out the identity of the stalker.

Gadd had previously made it clear that he’s changed names and specific details of the story to protect the identities of those involved and claimed ‘Martha’, as his stalker is named in the show, “would not even recognise herself” if watching.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, many users have speculated on the woman’s identity to the point where Gadd has now intervened.

Gadd wrote on his Instagram Story about how “people I love, have worked with, and admire” were being targeted unfairly online.

He added: ”’Please don’t speculate on who any of the real life people could be. That’s not the point of the show.”

Gadd previously told GQ: ‘We’ve gone to such great lengths to disguise her to the point that I don’t think she would recognise herself.’

He also told The Independent: ‘I can’t emphasise enough how much of a victim she is in all this…Stalking and harassment is a form of mental illness. It would have been wrong to paint her as a monster, because she’s unwell, and the system’s failed her.”

The synopsis explained that the show focuses “on struggling comedian Donny Dunn’s (Gadd) strange and layered relationship with a woman named Martha (Jessica Gunning), whose initially friendly demeanour unravels as she begins to stalk Donny relentlessly”.

“Their first interaction is innocent enough: While working his shift as a bartender, Donny shows an act of kindness to Martha, a customer whose vulnerability is readily apparent,” the synopsis adds.

“But, as the saying goes, ‘no good deed goes unpunished,’ and this casual encounter sparks a suffocating obsession that threatens to wreck both their lives and forces Donny to face his deeply buried trauma.”

The show’s soundtrack features a number of classic rock and pop songs, including tracks from Roxy Music, Dusty Springfield, David Byrne, Peggy Lee, Brian Eno and George Harrison. Read a breakdown of the full soundtrack here.

Some viewers of the show also believe they have spotted a hidden code hidden in Martha’s emails on the show, which appear to reference the show Lost.

Ben Stiller says ‘Zoolander 2’ flop affected him “for a long time”

“It really freaked me out”

The post Ben Stiller says ‘Zoolander 2’ flop affected him “for a long time” appeared first on NME.

NME

Ben Stiller has said that the Zoolander 2 flop affected him “for a long time” in a new interview.

Stiller, who wrote, produced, directed and starred in the 2016 sequel reflected on the experience with X-Files actor David Duchovny’s upcoming podcast, Fail Better.

Stiller said: “I thought everybody wanted this…And then it’s like, ‘Wow, I must have really fucked this up. Everybody didn’t go to it. And it’s gotten these horrible reviews.”

The film made $29million (£23million) from a reported $50million (£40million) budget and included cameos from the likes of Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. It also featured actors who appeared in the first film including Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell.

Stiller continued: “It really freaked me out because I was like, ‘I didn’t know was that bad?’ What scared me the most on that one was, l’m losing what I think what’s funny, the questioning yourself…on Zoolander 2, it was definitely blindsiding to me. And it definitely affected me for a long time.

“…The wonderful thing that came out of that for me was just having space where, if that had been a hit, and they said ‘Make Zoolander 3 right now,’ or offered some other movie, I would have just probably jumped in and done that,” he continued.

“But I had this space to kind of sit with myself and have to deal with it and other projects that I had been working on – not comedies, some of them – I have the time to actually just work on and develop.

“Even if somebody said, ‘Well, why don’t you go do another comedy or do this?’ I probably could have figured out something to do. But I just didn’t want to.”

When asked why he didn’t want to by ” Duchovny, he continued: “It was just hurt. Finding yourself in terms of what creatively you want to be and do, I I always loved directing. I always loved making movies. I always, in my mind, loved the idea of just directing movies…since I was a kid, and not necessarily comedies. And so, over the course of the next like, nine or 10 months, I was able to develop these limited series.”

Stiller went on to direct 2018’s Escape at Dannemora for which he earned a DGA Award for Outstanding Directing. Stiller was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy.

In 2022, Stiller produced and directed the Emmy-nominated series Severance.

The full interview with Duchovny arrives on May 7.

Ryan Gosling blames ‘Angry Birds’ for killing ‘The Nice Guys’ sequel with Russell Crowe

“‘Angry Birds’ just destroyed us”

Ryan Gosling has blamed The Angry Birds Movie for killing The Nice Guys sequel with Russell Crowe.

There were plans for a sequel to the Shane Black-directed 2016 comedy but according to Gosling, the release date of the film clashed with The Nice Guys and resultantly the film didn’t perform well enough at the box office to secure a sequel.

“So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie, and we opened up against Angry Birds,” Gosling told Comic Book. “So Angry Birds just destroyed us. Angry Birds got a sequel.”

On its opening weekend,The Angry Birds Movie earned $38million (£30million) at the box office compared to The Nice Guys’ earnings of $11.2million (£8.9million). The Angry Birds Movie earned a sequel in 2019.

The Nice Guys saw Gosling and Crowe play two private investigators in 1977 Los Angeles’ who explore the disappearance of a teenage girl.

Back in 2023, Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme shared a number of his “go-to” most-watched movies and named The Nice Guys as one of his favourites.

“I love a movie called The Nice Guys,” he said last summer. “Whenever I’m feeling down, I watch this movie The Nice Guys with Ryan Gosling and … Russell Crowe. It’s just so funny and it’s very much Abbott and Costello somehow the way that movie is and the way people speak to each other. The dialogue makes me happy.”

Gosling meanwhile ended weeks of speculation recently by showing up at the Oscars last month and performing a showstopping version of ‘I’m Just Ken’, alongside Mark Ronson and Slash.

He also recently appeared on Saturday Night Live with Oppenheimer star Emily Blunt for a skit about the successes of their films last summer – Barbie and Oppenheimer

The pair also performed a duet of Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well’ on the show.

Quentin Tarantino wanted to bring back classic characters in scrapped final film

The director had recently scrapped plans for the film according to reports

The post Quentin Tarantino wanted to bring back classic characters in scrapped final film appeared first on NME.

NME

Director Quentin Tarantino wanted to bring back a number of his classic characters in what was to be his final planned film, The Movie Critic, according to reports.

The film was meant to be the director’s tenth and last film after he previously vowed to retire after making the film. However, earlier this month, Deadline Hollywood reported that sources said Tarantino had “simply changed his mind” about making The Movie Critic and that the film had now been scrapped.

Deadline‘s report also noted that Tarantino had re-written the script, and that the film’s production had been delayed due to last year’s writers’ and actors strikes.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter have claimed that one idea in the script was to bring back characters from Tarantino’s earlier films.

They report that Tarantino planned to “bring back some of the stars of his earlier work to reprise their iconic characters in ‘movie within a movie’ moments, or to play fictional versions of themselves as the actors who played those characters.” The publication say sources claimed it would have created a Tarantino “meta-verse” of sorts.

Brad Pitt had been attached to The Movie Critic as its lead actor, with rumours of other actors who had in the past worked with Tarantino also starring which would fit in with the idea of the director bringing back previous characters.

Tarantino is now seemingly focusing on an entirely new project for his final film.

Tarantino has previously revealed that The Movie Critic would be about a real-life film journalist for a “porno rag”, who he often read growing up.

“He wrote about mainstream movies and he was the second-string critic,” Tarantino shared previously. “I think he was a very good critic. He was as cynical as hell. His reviews were a cross between early Howard Stern and what Travis Bickle might be if he were a film critic.

Tarantino’s retirement plans have prompted various responses from the film world. Director Christopher Nolan has characterised it as “very purist”, saying: “It’s addictive to tell stories in cinema. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s very fun. It’s something you feel driven to do, and so it’s a little hard to imagine voluntarily stopping.”

In other news, French director Luc Besson has claimed he gave Quentin Tarantino the idea to retire after 10 movies.

Neseblod Records, the famous black metal site in Norway has been damaged by a fire according to reports.

As noted in Verdens Gang (VG), the iconic record store and venue space caught fire on April 9 and the surrounding apartments in the area were also evacuated due to the amount of smoke the fire caused.

The cause of the fire is as yet unknown; police received a report of a fire by a witness who saw flames in the basement of the property.

The cause of the fire is now currently under investigation.

The basement of the famed store was also a black metal museum of sorts. The venue’s owner, Kenneth Neseblod said: “Much of what we have is only on display and not for sale. It’s a museum-like venue at the same time as a record store. We have records, cassettes and tape trading letters that were previously used to write to each other in the metal community.”

A GoFundMe page to help Neseblod Records recover from the damage caused by the fire has now been set up.

The person who set up the page, called Darren, said: “I have been working with many Norwegian Black Metal bands over the years and Neseblod Records (Formerly Helvete) in the heart of Oslo, it has been part of the scene since the beginning of this unique musical movement, and is the heart and spirit of the genre,” the description reads.

“A fire ripped through the basement and shop last night destroying an archive of rare Black Metal History!, I am starting this Go Fund Me to help Kenneth get back on his feet.”

Over £22,000 has been raised via the page at the time of writing.

Tyler, The Creator has responded to Jerrod Carmichael’s crush on him – watch the moment below.

In the premiere episode of the Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, the comedian confessed to having a crush on Tyler, one of his long-time friends.

Carmichael recalled expressing his love for Tyler over text back in 2022 but revealed how the feelings weren’t mutual.

Tyler recalled calling Carmichael a “stupid bitch” and then said: “I think I just like brushed it off, getting news like that and avoiding it is a way to avoid change.”

Carmichael responded: “One, it’s embarrassing, a little bit, and obviously the fear of it being so totally unrequited.”

Despite this moment, Carmichael asked Tyler to be his date to the Emmy awards in 2022.

However, a few days before the awards, Tyler declined.

At the end of the episode, the pair discuss their friendship. Tyler said news of his friends feelings was “a lot of download” and that he saw Carmichael more as a family member.

“That’s like a brother. That man’s like family,” he continued. He admitted he “still didn’t know how to respond.”

The rapper recently addressed the rejection during his headlining set at Coachella last week.

The rapper made an explosive entrance during his headline set at Coachella at the weekend, bringing out some huge names as surprise guests and breaking out a number of fan-favourite tracks.

Taking place as the closing performance of Coachella day two, eagle-eyed fans also noticed that there was a subtle pin badge that the musician was wearing throughout the set, showing his support for Palestine.

As highlighted by Clash, the distinctive pin simply showed the Palestinian flag, and was worn alongside a pin for Congo too – shedding light on the humanitarian disasters in both countries.

During his set, Tyler took to the stage after an RV parked on the stage burst into flames and launched him into the air. During the set, Childish Gambino joined him to perform ‘Running Out Of Time’ from Tyler’s 2019 album ‘Igor’, while A$AP Rocky later came out for the live debut of ‘Potato Salad’ followed by ‘Who Dat Boy’.

Later on in his headline slot, Tyler brought out Charlie Wilson to play piano on ‘EARFQUAKE’ and ‘911’. He also brought out Kali Uchis to perform ‘See You Again’.

The slot was given a four-star review from NME, with Rhian Daly writing: “It’s a reflection of the rapper’s cult icon status and a rebuttal to those in his life who didn’t believe in him […] After tonight, it feels unlikely that anyone will doubt him again.”

Jason Aalon Butler speaks out on the anniversary of Letlive. and teases reissue and reunion tour

“Me and the boys will see you soon-ish”

The post Jason Aalon Butler speaks out on the anniversary of Letlive. and teases reissue and reunion tour appeared first on NME.

NME

Jason Aalon Butler has spoken out about the anniversary of Letlive. and has teased an album reissue and reunion tour for the band.

According to a series of new social media posts, the post-hardcore band are seemingly reforming for a series of farewell shows across the world next year.

They are also releasing a new, remastered version of their landmark album, ‘The Blackest Beautiful’.

The influential band’s final line-up consisted of lead vocalist  Butler, guitarist Jeff Sahyoun, bassist Ryan Jay Johnson and drummer Loniel Robinson. Throughout their career, they released four albums and one EP, with their final album, ‘If I’m The Devil’, released in 2016. They broke up in 2017, announcing the split on social media at the time.

In a new post on the band’s social media page, they wrote: “11 years of ‘The Blackest Beautiful’ after 7 years of silence. Remixed, Remastered, Revisited.”

They added: “And to our friends that we never got to say goodbye to – we’ll see you next year to do so. Promoters see slide 2. We’d like suitable spaces around the world for proper farewells,” they added, making a plea to promoters to get in touch.

They concluded: “ll.ove one last time.”

In a lengthy new post reflecting on the band’s split, Butler added: “I spent so many years of my life trying to find myself in this band. Trying to understand what I believed mattered. What was worth fighting for and, equally, what was worth sacrificing for. Which is what I did when I decided it was time to walk away from @letliveperiod.”

“It was a sacrifice. A necessary one for my own mental, emotional and physical health. It was somewhat Shakespearean realising that in order to truly honour myself and this band I had to let people love it in their own way even when I was having trouble love myself and let this idea we created be remembered in an honourable state. When I put this project to rest I didn’t know when or if I’d ever come back to it.

“The pain, the peril, the literal hazards I and members of this project experienced are almost too wild to be true. But, in fact, they are. And that is why I felt one last time around the as necessary. This band was not easy for me. It was never ever glamorous. And sometimes it was hard to believe it loved me back the same way I loved it, but I recently came to realise it was y’all that made this band. It was y’all that made it unique.

“The disparate identities colliding to form one common belief system each night as well a the 15 years of its existence is still something I cannot believe happened. But it very much did. Y’all are the reason letlive. was able to exist and y’all are the reason I’ve decided to come back for an actual farewell.”

He continued: “ I want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me in this project and every other I’ve been a part of as I know so many of you followed me from here. Thank you for letting me be vulnerable while attempting bravado all at once. Thank you for laughing, singing and exploring with me. Thank you for hurting, living and learning with me even more so. With that being said- I ll.ove you and me and the boys will see you soon-ish.

“If you’ve read this far- keep up the community and drop your favorite memories, shows, people you’ve met due to your relationship with ll. in the comments. I love reading that sh*t.”

After Letlive., Taylor went on to form Fever 333 alongside former The Chariot guitarist Stephen Harrison and Night Verses drummer Aric Improta.

Back in January, Fever 333 shared a blistering new single titled ‘Ready Rock.

In ‘Ready Rock’, frontman Jason Aalon Butler and co. play homage to the Black artists who founded rock n’ roll, and use their signature heavy sound to shed light on the musicians that came before them but were denied due credit.

“With this month (February) being Black History Month, ‘Ready Rock’ pays homage to black artists of the past that unequivocally built rock n’ roll into what it is today. Fever bring light to the lineage of iconic rock sounds and sonics that have often gone uncredited to their proper black creators, with the assertion, Rock Music is Black Music,” a press release stated.

‘Ready Rock’ was produced by Fever 333, and features co-production from both the Grammy Award-winning Beach Noise (Kendrick Lamar, Baby Keem) and Glassjaw’s Justin Beck.

The newly shared single marked the second track to be shared from the group following a major line-up change last year.

Dozens more artists join Great Escape 2024 boycott, as half the line-up demands festival drop Barclays sponsor in solidarity with Palestine

Lambrini Girls are the latest band to cancel their appearance at the festival

The post Dozens more artists join Great Escape 2024 boycott, as half the line-up demands festival drop Barclays sponsor in solidarity with Palestine appeared first on NME.

NME

Dozens more artists have joined a boycott of this year’s Great Escape festival, with over half the line-up demanding the festival drop their sponsorship with Barclays in solidarity with Palestine.

The Brighton-based festival is sponsored by the bank, which has been a source of controversy amid the current events in Gaza because of the bank’s financial investment in companies that supply arms to Israel.

The issue was first highlighted by a petition started by the promoter How to Catch a Pig and the band The Menstrual Cramps, and has since been signed by artists including Kneecap, Lambrini Girls, Alfie Templeman, Lip Critic, Wunderhorse and Mary in the Junkyard who have urged the festival to drop Barclays as a sponsor.

Then, Cherym pulled out of playing Great Escape due to the festival’s connection with Barclays bank before record labels Alcopop and Big Scary Monsters joined the boycott and pulled out of the festival.

Now, dozens more have joined the boycott over the controversial partnership. The latest to drop out of performing include Lambrini Girls, ‌ZHEANI, Rett Madison, Mui Zyu, Hongza, Sarah Crean, LVRA, Ideal Living, Van Zon, COMRAD, Other Half, Cherym and Borough Council.‌

Speaking about their decision not to play the festival, Lambrini Girls issued a statement saying: “We will not be appearing at The Great Escape festival this year. This is a targeted approach of a cultural boycott, considering Barclays sponsorship.

“Barclays provide financial services of over £1BN pounds to companies supplying military technology and weapons to the IDF, perpetuating the horrors unfolding in Gaza.”

‌216 artists, making up approximately half of the festival’s lineup, have now signed a statement calling on the festival to drop its partnership with Barclays because of the bank’s financial investments in companies that supply arms to Israel.

‌The statement is supported by over 1000 musicians and industry professionals so far. 216 of the signatories are booked to play at this year’s festival.

The statement reads: “A bank that is involved in Israel’s genocide has no place at The Great Escape, which is a fixture of the independent music scene and has a prized place in the industry. We refuse to let music be used to whitewash human rights violations. We cannot let our creative outputs become smokescreens behind which money is pumped into murdering Palestinians.”

NME has reached out to The Great Escape festival for comment. ‌

Australian musician ZHEANI said of their decision not to play the festival: “The banking establishment not only support and profit off the current Israeli assault on Gaza but have funded all wars for centuries. I cannot support evil. Free Palestine.”

Rett Madison also confirmed she would be dropping out too. Madison said: “In support of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, I am joining the boycott of Barclays and withdrawing my performance at The Great Escape Festival this May.”

While Jasmine.4.t added: “I’ve dropped out from The Great Escape and I’m encouraging all artists to disrupt the festival by withholding their labour as it’s completely unacceptable and frankly disgusting that they still haven’t dropped famed genocide-financers Barclays. Barclays is a widely-known primary target for the BDS movement, and is responsible for over £4bn of investments in Israeli arms, and TGE are giving them cultural capital and artwashing their crimes via their partnership.”

The move comes a month after swathes of artists refused to play Austin’s SXSW Festival, due to its connections with the US Army and weapons companies amid the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Gruff Rhys, Kneecap, Sprints, Lambrini Girls, Gel, Rachel Chinouriri, Cardinals and NewDad  all eventually pulled out from SXSW, as well as every Irish act on the bill. Many of the artists expressed that they had made the decision out of solidarity with the people of Palestine.

In light of the withdrawals, SXSW released a statement regarding all of the bands and artists who have been pulling out of the festival, saying: “We are an organisation that welcomes diverse viewpoints. Music is the soul of SXSW, and it has long been our legacy. We fully respect the decision these artists made to exercise their right to free speech.”

Explaining its sponsorship with the US Army, SXSW wrote: “The defence industry has historically been a proving ground for many of the systems we rely on today. These institutions are often leaders in emerging technologies, and we believe it’s better to understand how their approach will impact our lives.”

Watch Laufey’s cinematic new short film for ‘Goddess’ – by ‘Past Lives’ director Celine Song

“I feel so lucky to collaborate with someone whose work I admire so much”

Laufey has today (April 16) released a new short film for her song ‘Goddess’, which has been directed by Past Lives director Celine Song – watch it below.

The video stars Laufey alongside William G. Hardy (from Netflix’s Heartstopper), and was shot in Brooklyn, New York on 35mm film.

Speaking about the video, Laufey said: “It was so special to work with Celine on the ‘Goddess’ short film. She has such a clear vision with her work, which became immediately evident to me while watching Past Lives, and her ideas around ‘Goddess’ harmonised perfectly with the narrative of the song.

“There was immediately a shared understanding that made the partnership so seamless and I feel so lucky to collaborate with someone whose work I admire so much.”

Watch the video here:

Celine Song’s Past Lives was NME’s film of the year in 2023, with our five-star review saying “Past Lives will make you think your hardest, most devastating breakup was not only worth it, but the best moment of your life.

“…Whether in NYC or Seoul, Song can scarcely resist signposting each location change with a soothing sunset or golden horizon. If Past Lives is anything to go by, her future in Hollywood will be just as bright.”

Speaking to NME last year for a cover feature, Laufey opened up about her hope of bringing jazz to a wider audience.

“I always said to my mom, I remember when I was 11 in the car, ‘I want to do for jazz music what Taylor Swift did for country music’,” she explained. “With every day, with every little achievement, I feel like I’m getting closer to that goal of bringing jazz back to my generation.”

Laufey also spoke to NME about winning her first Grammy this year.

“It was so special,” she told us back in March. “Meeting other artists was the most shocking part of the Grammy week for me. It was crazy to see artists that I listen to, and to get to talk to them and see that they knew who I was as well, somehow… that felt beyond me! It was really cool and I felt like I was part of a community.”
