City Girls’ JT urges fans to defy Universal’s TikTok ban for new single

“IDC – just spread the sound”

JT has advised fans to use unofficial versions of her upcoming solo single on TikTok despite Universal Music Group (UMG)‘s banning their music from the platform.

In January, Universal announced that it would withdraw its artists’ songs from the platform, citing unfair compensation for the artists and the harmful effects of A.I. Days later, TikTok confirmed that it had also started to remove songs from songwriters signed with Universal Music Publishing Group.

Now, City Girls member JT – who is signed to Motown Records, a subsidiary of UMG – is set to release ‘Okay’ tomorrow (April 19). Ahead of its release, she urged her fans on X/Twitter to promote the song on TikTok, as UMG’s ongoing dispute with the app will prevent her from uploading the official audio.

“Remember I’m with UMG so once [the] song is out, [the] TikTok [sound] will be muted so try to get a distorted sound going,” JT tweeted. “I have one on my TikTok, use it if you want or make your own. IDC – just spread the sound [megaphone emoji]”

‘Okay’ is JT’s third single to date and can be expected to feature on the Miami star’s upcoming solo mixtape, ‘City Cinderella’.

Although JT seems to be the first artist to overtly defy UMG’s decision to remove their catalogue from TikTok, others signed to the conglomerate still manage to share their music on the app. Olivia Rodrigo has posted videos of her singing along to songs from her latest album ‘Guts’, including one where she promotes a fan upload of ‘Obsessed’.

In addition, Taylor Swift’s music has recently returned to TikTok after being removed earlier this year, likely due to Swift now owning her masters and publishing rights. This coincides with the release of her upcoming album, ‘The Tortured Poets Department’.

Other artists signed to the label who have been affected by UMG’s decision include Bad BunnyThe WeekndDrakeBillie EilishJustin BieberAdeleColdplayJ BalvinPost Malone and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

At the time, UMG explained that its licensing agreement with TikTok expired on January 31 and that negotiations to renew the contract had fallen short.

UMG stated that they pushed for “three critical issues” while renegotiating their contract with TikTok: the “appropriate compensation for [their] artists and songwriters, protecting human artists from the harmful effects of A.I. and online safety for TikTok’s users.” The label also believed that “TikTok is trying to build a music-based business, without paying fair value for the music.”

They added that “TikTok encourages A.I. music creation on the platform itself” and “demanding a contractual right which would allow this content to massively dilute the royalty pool for human artists, in a move that is nothing short of sponsoring artist replacement by A.I.”

UMG concluded that “TikTok’s tactics are obvious: use its platform power to hurt vulnerable artists and try to intimidate us into conceding to a bad deal that undervalues music and shortchanges artists and songwriters as well as their fans.”

TikTok published its own statement in response to UMG, accusing the publisher of pushing a “false narrative and rhetoric” and for putting its “own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters”.

The platform’s short statement noted that UMG had “chosen to walk away from the powerful support of a platform with well over a billion users that serves as a free promotional and discovery vehicle for their talent”.

Rihanna says she’s “got stuff she could make hits out of” for new album

“Me and [A$AP] Rocky are really trying to figure out who’s going to use what because it’s so good”

The post Rihanna says she’s “got stuff she could make hits out of” for new album appeared first on NME.

NME

Rihanna has provided an update on her long-awaited new album, saying she’s “already got stuff she could make hits out of”.

Yesterday (April 17), the Bajan singer attended a launch party for her FENTY x PUMA Creeper Phatty Earth Tone shoe line in London. At the event, she spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her new collection, her fashion sense and motherhood.

After sharing that her sons RZA and Riot‘s favourite song is ‘Wheels On The Bus’, Rihanna revealed if her children would appear on any of her new music.

“I mean, it’s up to them,” the ‘Needed Me’ singer said. “I already got stuff I feel like I could make hits out of. Me and [partner, A$AP] Rocky are really trying to figure out who’s going to use what because it’s so good.”

Earlier this month, the pop juggernaut shared that she has “a lot of visual ideas” for her hotly-anticipated ninth album.

“It’s weird,” she said. “My brain is working backwards right now. I usually have the music first, and the music leads me into all of these visual opportunities, and now I’m having all of these visuals, and I don’t have the songs for them yet, but maybe that’s the key, this time. Maybe the visual ideas are leading me to the songs that I need to make.”

When asked if she saw the project as somewhat of a “rebirth”, Rihanna responded: “Random ideas, quirky ideas, things that have nothing to do with me at all. I mean, I can’t tell you. The opps is watching.”

While talking with ET, she confirmed that she still “doesn’t have the songs just yet” to go with her visual ideas. Afterwards, Rihanna diverted the chat away from her upcoming music, saying: “I can’t tell you [anymore]. That’s like me snitching on my record.”

Rihanna’s last full-length album was her 2016 eighth album ‘Anti’. She has been teasing the follow-up – dubbed ‘R9’ – since 2018, originally promising fans in an Instagram comment that it would arrive the following year. In 2019, she further taunted fans by uploading a video of a dog dancing to House Of Pain’s ‘Jump Around’ with the message “Update: me listening to R9 by myself and refusing to release it.”

In 2020, however, she dampened the hopes for the album when she told fans to stop asking her to release new material during the pandemic.

Last year, Rihanna signed a new deal with Live Nation and it was reported that the singer planned to release new music ahead of a potential world tour in the next few years.

In December, Rihanna added to the rumours by alluding that there may be new music and a world tour on the horizon. “Well, we’re always gonna go back on tour. [But] I feel I want to do a tour when there’s new music. We already know what that’s gonna be, with the songs that I’ve performed on my last tour. That was a long time ago,” she told Entertainment Tonight.

“I feel like it’s only fair that my fans get what they’ve been waiting on, which is new music. After that, let’s just like, blow everything up.”

More recently, A$AP Rocky confirmed in February that Rihanna was still “working on” her ninth album.

Rihanna’s last release was the 2022 song ‘Lift Me Up’, the sombre lead single to the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack and a tribute to late actor Chadwick Boseman.

50 Cent supports Kesha changing ‘TiK ToK’ lyrics to “like fuck P Diddy” at Coachella

“PUFFY LIKE, ’50 TOLD HER TO SAY THAT!'”

The post 50 Cent supports Kesha changing ‘TiK ToK’ lyrics to “like fuck P Diddy” at Coachella appeared first on NME.

NME

50 Cent has shown his support for Kesha, who changed the lyrics to her debut single ‘TiK ToK’ to insult Diddy while performing at Coachella this weekend.

Reneé Rapp brought out the Kesha last Sunday during her set at the California festival to sing her 2009 Number One song, which has the memorable opening line: “Woke up in the morning feeling like P Diddy.” While on stage, Kesha changed the lyrics to instead sing, “Wake up in the morning like fuck P Diddy”.

50 Cent – who has been vocal about his views on Diddy’s current legal troubles – found Kesha’s lyric change funny – telling his Twitter followers: “LOL! She said, [middle finger emoji] ‘Fuck P. Diddy’. HAHAAHAHA! [side eye emoji] PUFFY LIKE, ’50 TOLD HER TO SAY THAT!'”

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has been hit with several allegations since November 2023, when his ex-girlfriend Casandra ‘Cassie’ Ventura filed a lawsuit against him for sexual and physical abuse. The case was later settled out of court.

A week later, two new allegations by two different women also came out with one claiming that Combs drugged and sexually assaulted her and the other alleging that Combs and singer-songwriter Aaron Hall took turns raping the plaintiff and her friend in 1990 or 1991 – with Diddy allegedly turning violent days later.

In the same month Cassie accused Diddy of rape and physical assault, Kesha changed the lyrics to ‘TiK ToK’ for the first time. At the Los Angeles stop of her ‘Only Love’ tour, she sang, “Wake up in the morning feeling just like me.”

Kesha also filed a lawsuit against her former boss Dr Luke, claiming he had sexually assaulted and emotionally abused her. He denied the allegations and countersued the artist, claiming she had breached the recording contract they had with one another and made up rape allegations in an attempt to get out of the deal. Last June, the pair reached a settlement in their defamation lawsuit just one month before the case was due to go to trial.

However, Kesha maintained her original claims and is now released from Dr Luke’s Kemosabe record label.

Elsewhere, producer Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones sued Combs in February for sexually assaulting him, having parties where sex workers and underage girls were present, and coercing him to sleep with prostitutes. Diddy replied, saying Jones’ claims were “pure fiction”.

Additionally, Diddy’s homes in Los Angeles and Miami were raided by US Homeland Security as a part of a sex trafficking investigation last month. An expert on the matter shared that the agency is looking into allegations that Combs had been drugging young women in multiple states. Combs denies any wrongdoing.

In other news, Kesha said that she is working on new music “ferociously” and has teased her next musical era in snippets she posted on social media.

Meanwhile, 50 Cent has confirmed he will be releasing a docuseries on Diddy’s sexual assault allegations called Diddy Do It? There is no release date for the project yet.

SZA to be second Black woman receive award from Songwriters Hall Of Fame

Nile Rodgers hailed SZA for her “incredible songwriting, incredible performances, incredible artistry” in naming her the recipient of the Hal David Starlight Award

SZA will be honoured with the Hal David Starlight Award at the 2024 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards gala.

According to a press release, the Hal David Starlight Award is presented to “gifted young songwriters who are making a significant impact in the music industry with their original songs.” The chart-topping singer will also become the second black woman to receive the honour – the last being Alicia Keys in 2005.

“This is such an exciting time for songwriters and music,” said Songwriters Hall of Fame chairman Nile Rodgers. “Phenomenal artists like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are pushing the envelope of what success looks like, but who could argue that the last two years belong to SZA. Incredible songwriting, incredible performances, incredible artistry. She so deserves to be the 2024 recipient of the Hal David Starlight Award!”

SZA reacted to the news online, writing in an Instagram story post: “This is THE most meaningful thing to me. You have NO idea. THANK YOU beyond words for seeing me at all.”

The event will take place on June 13 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City, and will also honour this year’s inductees, including R.E.M., Steely Dan, Timbaland and more.

Non-performing writers Hilary Lindsey and Dean Pitchford will also be honoured for their contributions to country music and ’80s film soundtracks, respectively.

In another statement, Rodgers emphasised the importance of songwriters in the music industry, stating: “I’ve said it before, but the music industry does not exist without songwriters delivering great songs first. Without them there is no recorded music, no concert business, no merch… nothing, it all starts with the song and the songwriter.

“We are therefore very proud that we are continually recognizing some of the culturally most important songwriters of all time and that the 2024 slate represents not just iconic songs but also diversity and unity across genres, ethnicity and gender, songwriters who have enriched our lives and literally enriched music and the lives of billions of listeners all over the world.”

Jade, Snoop Dogg and Electric Light Orchestra’s Jeff Lynne were included in last year’s class of Songwriters Hall Of Fame inductees, alongside Gloria Estefan, Teddy Riley, Glen Ballard and Liz Rose.

Earlier this year, SZA shared that she was working on the deluxe version of her second studio album ‘SOS‘, which she has now expanded into another album called ‘Lana’. Last month, she spoke about the leaked songs that surfaced online, confirming that they were intended for her next release. She added that “‘Lana’ deserves more time and music no one’s ever heard before,” so fans can expect to wait longer for the record.

The ‘Snooze’ singer also updated fans on her album, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “I want to allow it to finish shaping itself and form itself before I speak on it and possibly change the trajectory of what it could be. But, I will say, I’m in a beautiful space creatively and I feel just very new.”

In other news, SZA will be headlining Glastonbury Festival this year, marking her first-ever appearance at the Worthy Farm event. In addition, she will be performing at BST Hyde Park in London that same weekend before playing another huge gig at Dublin’s Malahide Castle on July 3 – check here for any available tickets.

TikTok rapper-producer reveals process behind viral A.I. Kendrick Lamar diss track

The song was thought to be Lamar’s real response to J. Cole and Drake’s respective diss tracks towards him

A TikTok rapper-producer has revealed he created the reeent viral Kendrick Lamar diss track.

On the 2023 single ‘First Person Shooter’, Drake compared himself to Michael Jackson as the two are now tied for the most Number One singles on the Billboard charts. Last month, Lamar took jabs at Drake on ‘Like That’ from Metro Boomin and Future’s first joint project, ‘We Don’t Trust You’ by likening himself to Prince – Jackson’s longtime rival. “Prince outlived Mike Jack’ N****, bum, ‘fore all your dogs gettin’ buried That’s a K with all these nines, he gon’ see Pet Sematary,” he rapped.

Drake seemingly responded to Lamar on ‘Push Ups (Drop And Give Me 50)’ – a leaked diss track aimed at Lamar, Metro Boomin, Future and more. “This the bark with the bite, nigga, what’s up? / How the fuck you been steppin’ with a size seven mens on?” he added, alluding to the Californian’s fifth studio album ‘Mr Morale & The Big Steppers’.

Earlier this week, a snippet of a supposed diss track by Lamar surfaced online. In the song – known as ‘One Shot’ – the rapper said: “Utter my name three times in front of your mirror / You hesitate to proceed after you have to reconsider.” This has caused fans to think the lyrics were mostly aimed at J. Cole, who dropped a diss track called ‘7 Minute Drill’ aimed at Lamar in response to ‘Like That’. He soon said that he regretted the choice and removed it from streaming services.

The song turned out to be fake, with the TikToker SyTheRapper taking credit for making the A.I.-generated diss track. He uploaded a video on TikTok where he broke down how he made the track.

“First, you gotta get a beat that sounds like chaos and the world is ending,” he said before confirming that he “cooked up” the instrumental. Sy then showed himself recording the lyrics he wrote for the A.I. diss track.

At the end of the video, SyTheRapper admitted that he “shocked” himself: “I thought it was gon’ sound fake. I thought people were going to be able to tell it was fake, but people did actually think it was real.

“So, I just wanna come out for the record and say that it’s A.I. and it’s not Kendrick’s response. I know Kendrick gon’ come harder than that. I just couldn’t get too disrespectful because I ain’t in a beef.”

Although Lamar’s “diss track” was fake, Rick Ross has legitimately responded to Drake’s ‘Push Ups’ song. On the latter, the 6God mocked Ross’ age and finances, adding “Every song that made it on the chart, he got from Drizzy.”

So, Ross dropped ‘Champagne Moments’ on which he accused Drake of having a nose job and using ghostwriters. He also directly responded to the Canadian’s claims about needing him to chart: “Let you DM my hoe, but got bitches you can’t / Let you get on my songs, it was good for your face.”

Before ‘Push Ups’ was leaked, Joe Budden revealed that Lamar and Drake’s ongoing rap battle could be “nuclear”.

“Whatever little rap-y shit you thought was going on, it’s not that and something’s coming,” he began. “I have it on good information that both sides went in the booth and came out. And what I’m hearing about both sides is that it’s nuclear. It’s up, up. I’m hearing this from people that can rap. So I wanna come in here and say that speculation time is over. “Whatever little rap-y shit you thought was going on, it’s not that and something’s coming”

The post Joe Budden says Drake and Kendrick Lamar are about to “go nuclear” with diss tracks appeared first on NME.

Joe Budden has made claims that Drake and Kendrick Lamar have both gone into the studio and made diss tracks against one another.

On the 2023 single ‘First Person Shooter’, fellow rap peer J. Cole called himself, Lamar and Drake “the big three” of modern rap music. Last month, Lamar threw this statement back in Cole’s face on the Metro Boomin-produced ‘Like That’. “Motherfuck the big three,” he declared, “N****, it’s just big me”.

This led to Cole sending a rebuttal on ‘7 Minute Drill from his most recent mixtape ‘Might Delete Later’, which he later retracted and admitted he regretted.

Drake has yet to directly reply to Lamar’s verse. However, he seemingly commented on the situation while performing on his and Cole’s ‘It’s All A Blur’ tour. “You know the way I’m feeling? I got my head up high, my back straight, I’m feeling 10 feet fucking high,” he told the crowd. “No matter where I go, there’s not a n**** on this Earth that can fuck with me tonight.”

Budden shared his thoughts on the aftermath of Lamar’s verse on his popular The Joe Budden Podcast.

“Whatever little rap-y shit you thought was going on, it’s not that and something’s coming,” he began. “I think that J. Cole knows that from either Drake, Kendrick or both. And it was time to bow out because we are no longer in the first or second round with this thing. Kendrick has earned himself a buy with Cole’s apology.”

He added: “I have it on good information that both sides went in the booth and came out. And what I’m hearing about both sides is that it’s nuclear. It’s up, up. I’m hearing this from people that can rap. So I wanna come in here and say that speculation time is over. Debate time is over.

“I been saying for a few pods that I’ve seen absolutely nothing from Drake to get me excited enough to think that he will be capable of doing what needs to be done against the likes of a Kendrick Lamar. I’m here to say there is no longer any need for me to instigate anything. We’re here.”

Last year, Budden and Drake engaged in a feud of their own after the rapper-turned-broadcaster said the latter was “rapping for the children” on his last album, ‘For All The Dogs’.

“You’re going to be 37-years-old. Get the fuck away from some of these younger n***as,” said Budden. “I want to hear adult Drake rapping for adult people. He’s rapping for the kids, the streams, the accolades. He ain’t trying to rap for me. I can accept that.”

Drake hit back at the ‘Pump It Up’ star, telling him he “failed at music”. He continued: “You left it behind to do what you are doing in this clip cause this is what actually pays your bills. For any artist watching this just remember you are watching a failure give their opinion on his idea of a recipe for success… a quitter give their opinion on how to achieve longevity.”

Neither Kendrick Lamar nor Drake have responded to rumours about whether they have a diss track prepared for each other.

In other news, 50 Cent has reacted to Cole apologising to Lamar at this year’s Dreamville Festival, telling the rapper to “call [his] phone”.

Wireless announced last year that they would be relocating to Finsbury Park after moving the iconic festival to Crystal Palace Park in 2021 following the pandemic.

There was an arrangement for the festival to take place at venues such as Hyde Park, Harewood House and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on a year-by-year basis. However, this was changed following Haringey Council signing a five-year deal with Festival Republic, the promoter of Wireless. The move was made to raise “significant income’ for North London as well as boost the local economy.

Last year’s Wireless Festival took place at Finsbury Park in July 2023. Travis Scott, Playboi Carti and D-Block Europe were named as UK-exclusive headliners. Other artists on the bill included Lil Uzi Vert, Headie One, Joey Bada$$, Lil Durk, Popcaan, Lola Brooke and Glorilla.

Nia Archives – ‘Silence Is Loud’ review: reflective jungle from an essential new star

The journey to the Bradford-born star’s debut has included an NME Award, a support slot with Beyoncé and more

The post Nia Archives – ‘Silence Is Loud’ review: reflective jungle from an essential new star appeared first on NME.

NME

Nia Archives is one of the youngest in charge when it comes to dance music. At just 24 years old, she has put jungle on her back and skyrocketed the genre back into the mainstream. Through her unifying and enthralling sound, her ethos of bringing people together via music has gotten her so far. Her earlier upbeat club-friendly tunes like the 2022 singles ‘Mash up the Dance’ with Watch The Ride and the baile funk-inspired ‘Baìana’ had festival fields up and down the country breaking out into a well-earned skank.

Yet on her third EP – 2023’s ‘Sunrise Bang Ur Head Against Tha Wall’ – the Bradford star took a beat, sharing six “less ravey” tracks that reflected an “honest and real” version of herself. And the creative polymath’s debut album, ‘Silence Is Loud’, is a fleshed-out extension of this. Nia has said the album is one you have “to sit and listen to” – and when you do, you hear a collection of tranquil tracks that showcase her ability to craft intricate songs beyond a hedonistic floorfiller. Across the album, she expands on both her new laid-back production style and angsty songwriting to create candid, bittersweet gems that sum up the oddities of life.

With her uniquely spell-binding lilt, she sings about loneliness, family struggles and despair over understated melodies boosted with the jungle flair she’s synonymous with. Her earnest songwriting shines on tracks such as ‘F A M I L Y’ and ‘Crowded Roomz’; on the latter, a whining electric guitar riff highlights Nia’s simple story of feeling alone in crowded rooms: “It’s a facade, a persona, my costume / No one to turn to, they don’t understand my blues”.

‘Cards On The Table’ and ‘Out Of Options’ are other standout tracks featuring the same soft and atmospheric guitar sounds. But at the same time, they’re energised by zingy chimes that cushion the pensive lyrics. Clearly, Nia hasn’t forgotten the fun-loving nature of dance music. Elsewhere, the opening title track upholds the frenetic vibe of jungle music and reminds us why she won Best Producer at the NME Awards in 2022 as she expertly combines fizzy synths, a thumping bassline and nostalgic samples

Yet, ‘Silence Is Loud (Reprise)’ is the biggest highlight. Here, Nia rests her trusted jungle bassline and opts for nothing but piano and siren-style synths encourage her to belt her heart out – it’s certainly the most vulnerable moment in Nia’s discography. She exudes confidence and no longer hides her voice behind her wicked production skills – which she told NME she only developed because other producers “were messing her around”.

With each project, Nia waters the seeds of ideas and concepts she has planted throughout her discography. And, on her debut album, they all blossomed into a rich, self-reflective record that shows the artist beyond the beats. If ‘Silence Is Loud (Reprise)’ is anything to go by, let’s hope Nia uses her voice even more in the future. After all, what will the next generation of ravers listen to when they just need to be still?

Viral drill rapper Slim Jesus has reflected on the public reaction to him rejecting an offer from Diddy to sign him to Bad Boy Records.

In 2015, the Ohio rapper blew up on YouTube for his boisterous breakthrough track ‘Drill Time’. At the time, he was viewed as the genre’s next big star and was co-signed by drill legends Chief Keef and Lil Durk, leading to labels engaged in a bidding war to sign Slim. Diddy was one of the many label executives interested in furthering the then-17-year-old’s career.

This weekend (April 6), Slim shared a screenshot of a September 2015 tweet from the Bad Boy founder on Instagram, which read: “[One] million waiting on Slim Jesus when he come[s] to Bad Boy Records. #DriveSober.”

Slim Jesus never took the deal and Diddy quickly deleted the tweet shortly after.

In light of recent sexual abuse allegations against Diddy and the raid on his homes regarding a sex trafficking investigation, the 26-year-old remarked, “They called me crazy when I ignored this years ago.”

Last November, the singer and former Bad Boy signee Casandra “Cassie” Ventura claimed Diddy raped and physically abused her during their 11-year-long relationship.

Producer Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones sued Combs in February for sexually assaulting him, having parties where sex workers and underage girls were present, and coercing him to sleep with prostitutes. Diddy replied, saying Jones’ claims were “pure fiction”. He denies any wrongdoing.

At the height of his fame, Slim Jesus shared a video of him burning one of many contracts presented to him. “A little fun fact a lot of y’all don’t know: I [have] been had offers from the same bullshit ass labels signing your favourite rappers,” he said in the video. “And you know how I feel about ’em? Fuck a label. We getting independent money, bitch.”

The rapper’s popularity stirred controversy within the drill community. When being interviewed by hip-hop journalist DJ Vlad, Slim revealed that his raps were not authentic and he did not commit the crimes he portrayed in his music.

“On the street shit, I got homies that are in that shit and I know people who are and people around me. [But,] I’m not out here catching bodies and shit, obviously. I’m fucking smart,” he confessed.

In other news, Ashton Kutcher shared that there is “a lot I can’t tell” about Diddy‘s infamous parties in a resurfaced interview. Also, an old clip of Usher commenting on his experiences at Diddy‘s home as a 13-year-old went viral, saying “There were very curious things taking place and I didn’t necessarily understand it”.

Meanwhile, Diddy re-shared the seven-minute-long music video for his 1998 track ‘Victory’, in which he is running away from Los Angeles police.
