Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij have offered fans fresh hope that their beloved sci-fi show The OA could return to screens one day.

Speaking in an interview with NME ahead of their new show A Murder At The End Of The World, the creative duo reverted to an extended metaphor about seeds, plants and gardening – something both have commonly adopted in interviews when discussing the creative process.

The OA was cancelled in 2019 after just two seasons, having originally been written as a five-season story arc by Marling – who also starred in the show – and Batmanglij. The abrupt ending meant the show concluded on a spectacular cliffhanger, leading to worldwide fan protests and even a hunger strike outside Netflix’s LA headquarters.

“We’ve just started tending to the garden again, and so we’re watering, and we’re letting the sun hit the plants, and moving some of the plants so they get more of the sun,” Batmanglij explained. “But we stay neutral. We’re just gardeners side by side, Brit and myself, just gardening. And you know, OA 3 is a plant that is sitting there too, you know? We don’t think she’s dead. She’s just dormant.”

Marling continued the theme, referring to seeds that retain the potential for life, even in land destroyed by factory farming. “And so I think about OA sometimes that way; that right now she’s just a dormant seed in a desert landscape,” she told NME. “But conditions can change, you never know. And that seed, even though she’s dormant right now, can blossom again. Who knows what’s coming, right? I mean Twin Peaks came back, so anything’s possible.”

Marling and Batmanglij’s new limited series, A Murder At The End Of The World – renamed after initially being launched as Retreat – is a modern twist on the whodunit genre, set at a billionaire’s retreat in Iceland. The show sees Andy, an anxious tech mogul played by Clive Owen, invite a handful of great minds from various fields of expertise to attempt some solutions to humanity’s biggest problems. When one of them is found dead, amateur sleuth and true crime writer Darby Hart attempts to find out the truth, and the world of the show begins to unravel.

The pair had been contemplating a fresh take on a murder mystery four years ago, when a mutual friend told them about a tech retreat they’d attended. “It felt like the right time to do a modern, grounded version of the genre,” Marling said. “And then within that, Darby Hart as a character just formed very quickly and radically, and was a very vivid person between Zal and I – we found that the story came naturally when we thought about it singularly from Darby’s perspective.”

Marling also spoke about some of the themes explored in A Murder At The End Of The World, including the misogyny coded into classic detective shows. “And we felt like, okay, we want to do something in the murder mystery genre, but how do people like us inhabit that genre? Well, we have to completely turn it on its head.

“We have to take the young woman off the ground and give her clothes, and give her autonomy and identity; to stand her up and see if we can give her authority, and animate her to solve the crime, and explore the ways in which, when that young woman arrives at a crime scene, she might actually identify more deeply with the victim, and thinking more about the life that was lost, rather than the dark creativity of the killer.”

Addressing the new show’s exploration of late-stage capitalism, Batmanglij said both creators felt they had no choice but to address humanity’s biggest crises in their work. “People sort of roll their eyes when you talk about it, but it’s actually just the reality of what we’re living in, and we would be crazy not to talk about it in every single story we make. It’s that and the climate crisis. How can anyone tell a story these days without addressing the climate crisis?” he told NME.

“We felt the same thing with The OA – how could you make something without dealing with these mass shootings that are happening? How can we leave the things that are shaping our lives on the table, and just make stories about characters that don’t really stand for anything, don’t really experience anything?”

Batmanglij also felt there were similarities in writing both shows, explaining that he and Marling “basically wrote a novel, which is this story, and then we adapted it for the screen, and then we shot it”, adding: “It’s kind of like the first season of The OA – you know we always planned The OA as a set of novels, it had a novelistic feel, and that experience and this experience feel very similar to me, in the sense that it was fun to write a beginning, middle and end.”

Experimental horror film Skinamarink, which has been described as the “scariest” film ever made, is due for release next month – here’s how you can watch it in the UK.

The film is an outlier in terms of the money that is usually thrown around Hollywood, and is an independent release from Canadian director, writer and producer Kyle Edward Ball. The film is believed to have cost just $15,000 (£12,000) to make.

Skinamarink follows two young children, played by Lucas Paul and Kaylee Dali Rose Tetreault, who wake up in the middle of the night to discover their father is no longer home, and doors and windows in the house are disappearing. The children come to realise that a sinister presence is watching over them.

The film has already drawn comparisons to David Lynch’s revered film Eraserhead, and reviews are now calling Skinamarink “the scariest film of all time”.

For fans brave enough to check it out, the movie is set to premiere on Shudder next week – on Thursday, February 2.

Inverse also described it as “easily the most sinister and downright malevolent story put to film in a long time”. Meanwhile, Variety said there’s “an ominous entity at work” in the film, concluding: “What happens in Skinamarink sneaks up on you so quietly that you aren’t just scared; you believe.”

That said, those wanting a straightforward horror experience may not want to watch this film, due to it’s found-footage filming style. Bloody Disgusting previously hinted at this, commenting that while it will “instil unnerving terror” into some viewers, “others will find it too impenetrable to engage”.

Ryan Reynolds has announced UK dates for his new show Maximum Effort at The O2 in London – find all the details on how to secure tickets below.

The actor will appear on March 4 as part of the venue’s Just For Laughs comedy festival, which runs from March 2-5, with his Deadpool 2 co-star Rob Delaney set to moderate the conversation.

According to The O2 website, the show will “transport us into his creative multiverse as he talks about everything from his accomplished acting career to being a producer and screenwriter to a successful entrepreneur,” adding that it will be “filled with laughter, anecdotes, and insight into the Hollywood superstar.”

Tickets are on sale now, and available to buy here.

Back in November, Reynolds revealed that he wrote a Christmas Deadpool movie alongside the film’s writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Speaking to The Big Issue about his musical Christmas comedy Spirited, Reynolds said “I would love to see a song and dance number in a Deadpool movie,” before revealing that “four years ago, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and I wrote a Christmas movie starring Deadpool.”

He went on to say the film “got lost in the shuffle of Disney acquiring Fox and it never got made. Maybe one day we’ll get to make that movie. It’s not a musical, but it’s a full Deadpool Christmas movie.”

Reynolds also said he spoke to Deadpool 3 co-star Hugh Jackman about starring in a musical.

“Hugh and I were having coffee one day and he reminded me of something that is so vital with almost anything that you’re doing in the arts. He said, ‘Just remember to enjoy it, because if you’re enjoying it, we’ll enjoy it.’”

Jonathan Majors has opened up about the rigours of his exercise and diet regimen in preparation for his role in Magazine Dreams.

The new film stars Majors – who also bulked up for his role in Creed III – as an obsessive bodybuilder called Killian Maddox, and has already been gaining critical buzz.

Speaking at the Variety Studio at Sundance, the actor explained that he spent four months eating over 6,000 calories a day in order to play Maddox.

“I’m 6 feet tall. I’m 202 pounds,” Majors said. “In order to sustain that and to grow that you have to eat as much protein that you weigh. I ate 6,100 calories a day for about four months. That included the pre-work and the post-work of Creed III.”

“The normal bodybuilder works out two times a day,” he continued. “I’m playing Killian Maddox… Playing him you don’t fuck around. What ended up happening is I would train two hours, two times a day for the movie and a third time after wrap.

“Meanwhile, you eat six times a day. Lots of chicken. Lots of elk. That’s just for me. I like it.”

Majors also revealed that he has slowed down a little on his training, but is still keen to stay in shape.

“I played football in Texas. I got an appetite,” he added. “I really like being physical. I like hiking and running. I’ve got dogs. I’m only 33, I got to do something to stay with it. I don’t work out three times a day anymore. Just once a day.”

Yesterday it was reported that Magazine Dreams sparked a walkout from jurors at the Sundance Film Festival, after proper captioning was not provided.

During the premiere on Friday (January 20), jurors Jeremy O. Harris, Eliza Hittman and Marlee Matlin made the collective decision after a failure to provide adequate captioning for deaf and hearing impaired audience members, according to Variety.

The screening provided a captioning device for Matlin, who is deaf, though it reportedly didn’t work, leading to the walkout, while the jury has repeatedly expressed concerns during the festival over the use of open captioning.

Magazine Dreams is seeking distribution following its Sundance premiere, while Creed III is set for a UK release in March.

A reboot of Friday The 13th is in development, according to the original film’s director and producer.

Sean S. Cunningham is in the process of creating the new film alongside writer Jeff Locker and director Jeremy Weiss.

“Jeremy and I pitched our dream reboot of Friday The 13th – with Sean’s blessing to keep developing it with him,” Locker said (per Bloody Disgusting).

“Obviously, the prequel TV series has reignited interest about a new film, so we’re hoping the surrounding excitement will inspire both sides to come together and give us Jason on the big screen again for the first time in 14 years, but we also have a Plan B for a sequel to the original we think fans will absolutely love and should avoid any legal entanglements.”

The reference to “legal entanglements” acknowledges the difficulties the franchise has faced regarding the rights and trademarks of central villain Jason Voorhees, which has also been mired in a dispute over profits in recent years.

Cunningham, Locker and Weiss are also developing a reboot of 1985 comedy horror House, which Cunningham produced, and a new horror project called The Night Driver.

“Working on The Night Driver with Sean and Jeff was such a great experience, by the time the momentum was picking up we were looking for what projects could be next in line,” he said. “As a horror nerd through and through, Friday The 13th and House were naturally where I wanted to head next.”

Back in October, as Locker mentioned, it was confirmed that Friday The 13th prequel series is officially on the way courtesy of Peacock and A24.

The forthcoming series, titled Crystal Lake according to Variety, has been described as an “expanded prequel” and will be developed by Bryan Fuller.

There are 12 films in the Friday The 13th franchise so far, which began in 1980 and has been rebooted previously in 2009. There are no release dates yet for either Crystal Lake or the new film.

Marisa Abela has spoken out about her physical and artistic preparation for her performance as Amy Winehouse in the forthcoming biopic on the singer’s life.

Back To Black, which is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and began filming last week, stars Industry‘s Marisa Abela as the late star.

Speaking on the Before The Lights podcast, Abela said: “I went to an all-girls school in Brighton and it was brutal… this really toxic environment, and it definitely seeped into how I felt about myself.

“I was anticipating [training for the role] being quite difficult in terms of maybe thinking, ‘This is how I should look when I’m at my skinniest’.”

The actress said her training – including guitar lessons, an exercise regime, and two vocal coaches – turned out to be “the opposite”, adding: “I almost see my body as a true instrument that I’m training for a job. I need to work at it in the same way that I’m practicing guitar. If I was practicing for the last four weeks and I still couldn’t play a song, I’d be scared.

“It’s separating my feelings around weight loss, which I think for me, in the long run, will be really positive.”

Filming pictures and footage has emerged in the past week, including Abela, O’Connell and Marsan in character.

Winehouse’s life was the subject of 2015 Asif Kapadia documentary Amy, a film Mitch Winehouse was critical of, as well as 2021 BBC film Reclaiming Amy, which the singer’s father appeared in.

Channing Tatum has confirmed that he is working on a remake of Ghost, 33 years after the original was released.

The classic 1990 film, starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg, followed the story of Sam Wheat (Swayze), who manages to warn his partner Molly Jensen (Moore) that she is in danger from beyond the grave – aided by Oda Mae Brown (Goldberg).

Speaking in a new interview with Vanity Fair, which took place at a pottery class, Tatum revealed that he has plans to remake the film, possibly casting himself in the lead role. “Now I know why they put this in Ghost. This whole process is very, very sexual.

“We have the rights to Ghost. But we’re going to do something different,” he added, suggesting that the original film included problematic themes that might need rethinking. “I think it needs to change a little bit.”

Ghost made more than $500million at the box office upon its release, securing five Oscar nominations, including Goldberg’s first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

The Sister Act star later suggested that racism hindered the film’s legacy, saying: “We were a very mixed cast, and it makes you wonder, you know is that why nobody wanted to celebrate it?”

Tatum recently starred alongside Sandra Bullock in last year’s The Lost City. In a three-star review, NME wrote: “The Lost City isn’t cutting-edge entertainment, but it is a decent action film boasting a great cast and some good jokes, without a superhero in sight. That alone is cause for recommendation.”

‘Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 3’ to be split into two parts

Attack on Titan: Final Season Part 3 Final Arc is set to begin airing on Japanese broadcast in March.

Final Arc will be split into two halves, with the first scheduled to air at 12:25am in Japan (3:25pm GMT) on March 3, with Yuichiro Hayashi returning to direct the next part at MAPPA.

The second part is scheduled for later in 2023, though no precise date has been confirmed yet. Though the final season has technically been running for the past two seasons, Part 3 should be the conclusive end to Attack on Titan as there is no further manga left to adapt.

Crunchyroll shared a tweet from the show’s Japanese Twitter account, which revealed the date alongside a brand new trailer for the upcoming season – check it out below.

Attack on Titan is set in a world where humanity lives inside cities surrounded by three enormous walls protecting them from the gigantic man-eating humanoids called Titans. The story follows Eren Yeager, a boy who vows to exterminate the Titans after they bring about the destruction of his hometown and the death of his mother. The show is adapted from Hajime Isayama’s manga series, which ran from 2009 to 2021.

In a five-star review of Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2, NME wrote: “Charging forward with stunning animation, complex character dynamics, mature storytelling, incredible action and a fascinating mythology, Attack on Titan’s final run of episodes is shaping up to be spectacular and satisfying.”

‘South Park’ tease next month’s season 26 premiere

A teaser trailer for the forthcoming 26th series of South Park has been shared on social media, ahead of the season premiere next month.

The show’s previous season, which ran between February and March 2022, was followed later that year by a two-part special, The Streaming Wars. The specials saw the residents of South Park tussle over elevated land to make money streaming water to others in the town as they faced a drought – combining themes of climate change with the battle between streaming services like Netflix and Disney+.

The new 15-second teaser clip for season 26 starts with peaceful shots of cows grazing and a view over the town, before segueing to find Butters in a compromising situation. The clip also includes the caption ‘THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HERE’ and confirms the return date of February 2023. Watch the clip below.

Last month (December 20), it was revealed that South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have secured a $20 million investment for their AI entertainment startup Deep Voodoo, which was previously funded entirely by Parker and Stone’s independent entertainment company, Park County (per Variety).

Stone and Parker plan to use the new funding to “accelerate Deep Voodoo’s development of its leading deepfake technology, cost-effective visual effects services and original synthetic media projects,” according to the announcement. It was previously reported in August that the duo’s Donald Trump deep fake movie was on hold.

“We stumbled upon this amazing technology and ended up recruiting the best deepfake artists in the world,” Stone said in a statement. “We are psyched to share their brilliance with the Hollywood creative community.”
