The cast of Community have reunited for a virtual table read in aid of coronavirus relief, and Donald Glover pitched his idea for a spin-off movie.

The one-off special saw Glover reuniting with the cast of the show, which ended after six seasons in 2015, and was hosted in partnership with José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen and Frontline Foods’ COVID-19 relief efforts.

Glover mused on a film in which Abed Nadir, the character played by Danny Pudi, would go out in search of Glover’s character Troy – considered dead or lost at sea.

“I like movies like that,” Glover said, “What am I doing, writing the movie on the fly or something?” Pudi also supported the idea, adding: “I love the idea of Troy being lost and Abed’s mission is to go find him, try to track someone down — that would be fun.”

The rest of the cast raised their hands in favour of returning for a film, although Glover reminded everyone within the current context, “We can’t make movies right now anyway.”

Glover joined the show’s creator Dan Harmon and core cast members Pudi, Alison Brie, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong for the new special, which was broadcast on YouTube yesterday (May 18). The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal also took part in the table read.

The cast read through ‘Cooperative Polygraphy’, the fourth episode of the show’s fifth season which originally aired back in 2014, before taking part in a Q&A of fan questions.

Last year, the cast of Community confirmed that they would return to their characters if Harmon scripted a movie, seeing through the show’s notorious tagline of ‘six seasons and a movie’.

Alison Brie recently told fans to “stay tuned” with regards to an upcoming movie, hinting that work had already begun on a Community reunion.

Donald Glover left Community after its fifth season, with the show continuing for one further season.

Glover released a new album under his Childish Gambino moniker, ‘3.15.20’, earlier this year.

Reviewing the new album, NME wrote: “The new tracks do present a set of intriguing and well-executed contributions to Glover’s expanding discography — while continuing to steer clear of the Gambino raps of old, of course.”
