A man who broke into Eminem‘s home in Detroit earlier this year allegedly told the rapper that he was “there to kill him”.
Matthew Hughes appeared in court yesterday (September 9) and faces five years behind bars if he is convicted of first-degree home invasion and malicious destruction of a building.
Security footage shown to the Michigan court reportedly captures the moment that Hughes sneaked around the outside of the rapper’s home in April, before throwing a paving stone through the back window to gain entry.
The rapper woke up when the alarm system was activated at his home in Clinton Township, Michigan, and subsequently confronted Hughes in his living room.
Hughes was eventually detained by Eminem’s security guards, who heard the commotion and ran in.
Delivering their testimonies to the court, officers Adam Hackstock and Detective Dan Quinn explained that Hughes told Eminem that he broke into his house with the intention of killing him.
The rapper was not present for the hearing.
Hughes was previously arrested and charged in June 2019 after he was caught trespassing on two properties he mistakenly believed to be owned by Eminem.
He was subsequently sentenced to 90 days in jail and ordered to pay fines totalling $1,400.
Hughes is now being held on a $50,000 bond and is due back in court later this month.
