This spring will see the return of Shabazz Palaces. The experimental hip-hop outfit is due to release a new album called The Don of Diamond Dreams on April 17th via Sub Pop.

The forthcoming effort follows the group’s pair of 2017 records, Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star and Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines. It also follows the debut of 319, the new collaborative project from Shabazz Palaces mastermind Ishmael Butler and Oneohtrix Point Never’s Daniel Lopatin.

The self-produced Don of Diamond Dreams was recorded last year at Studio 4 Labs in Venice, California and includes additional contributions from singer/keyboardist Darrius Willrich, percussionist Carlos Niño, saxophonist Carlos Overall, and bassist Evan Flory-Barnes, among others. As to be expected considering Butler’s expansive musical mind, the LP patches together multiple genres. A press statement describes further,

“Therein, The Don of Diamond Dreams embodies a futuristic manifestation of ancient myth, full of robotic vocoder and warped auto-tune, Funkadelic refracted into different dimensions, weird portals and warm nocturnal joy rides alongside the coast (a reflection of it being mixed near the beach in California). The synthesizers are alien but the drums speak a universal language. It is hip-hop, dub, jazz, R&B, soul, funk, African, experimental, and occasionally even pop.”

There are 10 songs found on the album, including “Chocolate Souffle”, “Money Yoga”, and lead single “Fast Learner” featuring Purple Tape Nate. Hear that tune below.

The Don of Diamond Dreams is available for pre-order now. A slate of tour dates in support will be announced in the coming weeks.

Ozzy Osbourne Hopes to Start Working on Another New Album Next Month

The metal legend just released the long-awaited new album Ordinary Man last week.

Ozzy Osbourne just released his new solo album, Ordinary Man, last week. But the metal legend is already looking to begin work on the follow-up as soon as next month.

In a discussion Monday with iHeart Radio, co-hosted by Disturbed‘s David Draiman, Ozzy revealed he hopes to head back into the studio with producer Andrew Watt very shortly. After the cancellation of his North American tour, Ozzy could ostensibly still work on new music while undergoing treatments for his health ailments.

“With this album, because I was so miserable the last year, it was a relief just to get and do something that I love to do,” Osbourne said. “I had no deadlines. And I’m hoping that next month I’ll go and do another album with Andrew. I might as well, while I’m not doing gigs.”

The sessions for Ordinary Man proved inspiring for Ozzy, who’d been bed-ridden after a series of health issues including a staph infection, pneumonia, a nasty fall, and an ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease (which he only recently revealed). Working on the album became a healthy distraction, as Ozzy would jam with Watt, Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses, and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

Listen to The Opus – Ozzy Osbourne via Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Play | Stitcher

“My daughter, Kelly, came along, and she said, ‘A friend of mine is doing a record with Post Malone.’ I said, ‘Who the f**k’s Post Malone?'” Osbourne said. “To cut a long story short, I ended up meeting Andrew, who produced the Post Malone song [“Take What You Want”], one thing led to another.”

The looseness and spontaneity of Ordinary Man might be the template for a second album with Watt. The LP was finished quicker than anything Osbourne’s worked on except Black Sabbath’s 1970 debut, which was recorded in a few hours.

“We’d bounce the f**king melodies around until something came up, and we’d just go with it,” Osbourne said of Ordinary Man. “It was fun. And it was so f**king good to be doing something. Because I’d be lying in bed going, ‘That’s it, I’m never gonna walk again,’ and this got me doing something and feeling good. And it was simple, it felt more like recording a f**king jam session.”

As of now, Osbourne is still slated to tour Europe with Judas Priest this fall. Get tickets here.

This spring brings the release of a new album from The Magnetic Fields. Entitled Quickies, it comes more than three years after their 50 Song Memoir and is due May 15th via Nonesuch Records. To coincide with the news, the group has announced a supporting US tour.

The upcoming effort collects a generous 28 songs. But as indicated by the album’s name, each of the Stephin Merritt-penned tracks are relatively quick, ranging in length from 13 seconds to three minutes. In a statement (via Pitchfork), Merritt talked about his decision to keep things concise, saying,

“I’ve been reading a lot of very short fiction, and I enjoyed writing 101 Two-Letter Words, the poetry book about the shortest words you can use in Scrabble. And I’ve been listening to a lot of French baroque harpsichord music. Harpsichord doesn’t lend itself to languor. So I’ve been thinking about one instrument at a time, playing for about a minute or so and then stopping, and I’ve been thinking of narratives that are only a few lines long.”

The Magnetic Fields — rounded out by Sam Davol, Claudia Gonson, Shirley Simms, and John Woo — are teasing the new LP with “The Day the Politicians Died”, a two-minute piano number. Hear that below.

The indie outfit will promote the album with intimate City Winery shows in Chicago, Nashville, Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York, and Washington, DC. General on-sale begins February 28th and tickets will be available on Ticketmaster. Once they sell out there, fans can try their luck here.

Consequence of Sound

Perfume Genius has announced a new album called Set My Heart on Fire Immediately, due out May 15th through Matador. It’s his fifth full-length to date, following 2017’s well received No Shape.

The forthcoming collection sees the musician born Mike Hadreas again teaming up with producer Blake Mills (Fiona Apple, Alabama Shakes). Its 13 tracks were recorded in Los Angeles, where Hadreas and longtime partner/collaborator Alan Wyffels have resided for the last three years.

According to a statement, Set My Heart on Fire Immediately “explores and subverts concepts of masculinity and traditional roles,” while also playing with “themes of love, sex, memory and the body.” Hadreas elaborated, saying,

“I wanted to feel more open, more free and spiritually wild, and I’m in a place now where those feelings are very close — but it can border on being unhinged. I wrote these songs as a way to be more patient, more considered — to pull at all these chaotic threads hovering around me and weave them in to something warm, thoughtful and comforting.”

As an early look at the new full-length, Perfume Genius has unboxed a lead single dubbed “Describe”. The track originally began as a “really somber ballad,” but eventually turned into “this beast of a song,” per Hadreas. “I started writing about when you are in such a dark place that you don’t even remember what goodness is or what anything feels like. And so, the idea was having someone describe that to you, because you forgot or can’t get to it.”

Check out “Describe” below via its official video, helmed by Hadreas himself. It features choreographer Kate Wallich’s dance company The YC.

Set My Heart on Fire Immediately is available for pre-order now. In support of the album, Perfume Genius will tour North America with Tame Impala. Find your concert tickets here.

No Age are back with their first album in over two years. Due out on June 5th, Goons Be Gone follows up the band’s Snares Like a Haircut from 2018.

The forthcoming effort spans a total of 11 songs, boasting titles such as “Working Stiff Takes a Break”, “A Sigh Clicks”, “Head Sport Full Face”, and (my personal favorite) “Agitating Moss”. Goons Be Gone is described as the “most direct statement” from the duo of Randy Randall and Dean Spunt, as it taps into “their classic punk and indie to ever-evolving soundscapes.”

As an early listen for fans, No Age are sharing lead single “Turned to String”. The noisy and raw rock offering sees the Los Angeles group operating at full force. Hear it below.

What’s better than one Princess Nokia album? Try two. This Wednesday, February 26th, the New York rapper is dropping a pair of new albums, Everything is Beautiful and Everything Sucks. The two records are meant to showcase the different sides of the acclaimed artist.

Per a statement, Everything is Beautiful is a “representation of the sensitive, feminine side of the gender fluid artist.” It was written and recorded over the course of 24 months, mostly with live instrumentation, between New York, Los Angeles, and Puerto Rico. The full-length features additional production from Kendrick Lamar associate Terrace Martin.

As for Everything Sucks, the project packs in a “brash, ruthless and insistent collection of ten songs.” All were penned primarily “over one cathartic week in NYC with production by longtime friend and collaborator Chris Lare.”

To preview the forthcoming efforts, Princess Nokia has let loose the jazzy “Green, Eggs & Ham” from Everything is Beautiful and the aggressive “Practice” from Everything Sucks. On the latter offering, the MC boasts, “I brought punk to hip-hop.” Stream both tracks below.

These two records follow Princess Nokia’s 1992 mixtape from 2017, as well as the 2018 mixtape A Girl Cried RedIn support, the rapper will make her late-night TV debut on The Late Late Show with James Corden on release day. Additionally, Princess Nokia will soon embark on a tour that includes European dates and festival appearances at Coachella, Governors Ball, and Sonár. Grab your concert tickets here.

Album Review: Ozzy Osbourne Shines Through Real-Life Darkness on Ordinary Man

Heavy metal godfather Ozzy Osbourne is back with his first new solo album in 10 years.

Album Review: Ozzy Osbourne Shines Through Real-Life Darkness on Ordinary Man
Spencer Kaufman

Consequence of Sound

The Lowdown: Ozzy Osbourne is back with his first solo album in 10 years, but the recent road to its release has been a tough one. The metal godfather has experienced the “worst f**king year” of his life, as he put it, but managed to find time to record a new LP, Ordinary Man.

Ozzy had kicked off his “No More Tours 2” farewell trek in 2018, and things were going smoothly until late that year. First, he was hit with a staph infection that resulted in a hospital stay. Then, in early 2019, he battled pneumonia and suffered a serious fall at home, forcing him to postpone all of his 2019 tour dates. On top of all that, it turns out he had been battling Parkinson’s disease the entire time, revealing earlier this year that he was first diagnosed with the condition in 2003. He has since canceled his 2020 North American tour, which had been rescheduled from last year.

In the midst of his personal hell, Ozzy was asked to guest on a song called “Take What You Want” by hip-hop star Post Malone, and the creative floodgates opened wide. Malone’s producer, Andrew Watt, began working with Ozzy on a new album, with Watt playing guitar and Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith rounding out Ozzy’s backing band. Along with Ozzy, the three musicians churned out an album’s worth of songs in a very short period of time. Throw in some high-profile guest musicians like Malone, Elton John, Slash, and Tom Morello, and — voilà — Ordinary Man was complete.

The Good: Despite all of his health setbacks, Ozzy’s singing sounds as strong as ever on Ordinary Man. Sure, there might be a little studio magic helping the cause, but Ozzy’s voice remains one of heavy music’s most underrated marvels. He may not have the range of fellow metal gods like Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford or the late Ronnie James Dio, but there’s a haunting quality to Ozzy’s voice that is as unique as it is spine-chilling.

First single “Under the Graveyard” captures Ozzy at his finest, as the Prince of Darkness sings the mid-tempo verses over a beautiful guitar melody before launching into an anthemic chorus. Lyrically, the song captures Ozzy’s recent pain and suffering, as he sings, “Today I woke up and I hate myself/ Death doesn’t answer when I cry for help.”

Listen to The Opus – Ozzy Osbourne via Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Play | Stitcher

The best riff on the album belongs to Slash, who guests on the leadoff track “Straight to Hell”, a scorcher that casts Ozzy as the devil. With a nod to Black Sabbath’s “Sweet Leaf”, as Ozzy kicks things off with a very similar “Alright now”, the song is sinister and heavy. However, it proves to be a bit of a misleading intro to the album, as the rest of the tracks rarely rock as hard as the opening number.

Elton John lends his vocals and piano skills to the title track, “Ordinary Man”, a simple ballad that is certainly enhanced by the fact that it features two iconic voices of rock.

Throughout the album, the musicianship is topnotch, with McKagan and Smith serving as an all-star rhythm section. Meanwhile, Watt proves himself to be a fine guitarist, while his production on Ordinary Man is both crisp and grand.

The Bad: Before his health setbacks, Ozzy had welcomed back guitarist Zakk Wylde to his touring outfit, and the band (including bassist Blasko and drummer Tommy Clufetos) sounded amazing in 2018 when they kicked off the “No More Tours 2” trek. Zakk brought an old-school vibe that was electrifying onstage, and it was quite surprising to learn he wouldn’t be a part of this new Ozzy album. As good as the musicianship is on Ordinary Man, it’s almost too clean and too slick. In essence, it’s a very commercial rock album, and it would have been cool to hear some more down-and-dirty metal injected throughout.

While the singles are strong, songs like “Goodbye”, “Eat Me”, and “Scary Little Green Men” get lost in the shuffle. And there’s some rock-by-numbers going on, as the riff on “Today Is the End” sounds somewhat like a slow version of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”, while the intro to “Ordinary Man” borrows a bit from Mötley Crüe’s “Home Sweet Home”.

The Verdict: While Ordinary Man doesn’t stack up against early Ozzy classics like Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman, it is a step up from recent LPs like Black Rain and Scream. There’s strong songwriting, both musically and lyrically, with a handful of infectious choruses throughout the album. If anything, Ordinary Man suffers from being too crisp and too polished. Still, to know that Ozzy recorded this album at 70 years old, plagued by a bevy of health issues, is impressive, to say the least. In the face of all these obstacles, there’s light still shining on the Prince of Darkness.

Mandy Moore has confirmed the release of her first new album in 10 years: Silver Landings is due out on March 6th, 2020 through Verge Forecast.

The singer-actress recorded the 10-track album live to tape with a full band in one studio in Los Angeles. Longtime collaborator Mike Viola served as producer, while Moore’s husband Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes and Jason Boesel of Rilo Kiley feature prominently on the album.

The album’s title, Silver Landings, is a reference to a lyric on the album’s titular final song: “Reaching for golden ribbons up in the air/But I’m looking for silver landings.” Per a press release, this track was the last song Moore wrote for the album and “became emblematic of the journey she’s been through in the past decade, what it took to get to the point of re-embracing this part of her life, and the expectations therein.”

Today, however, Moore is previewing the album with another track, “Save A Little For Yourself”. In a statement, Moore explains, “‘Save a Little for Yourself’ is sort of the other half of a love song that we don’t always talk about or acknowledge. Sure, we should open ourselves up, let people in and love them as wholly as possible but none of that carries any water if we’re not taking care of ourselves first and foremost. It might not be as romantic, but it’s an equally important part of the equation.” Watch its corresponding music video below.

In support of Silver Landings, Moore will embark on her first tour in 10 years. The 29-date outing kicks off in March and runs through early June. You can get tickets to the upcoming dates here.

Update: Moore has shared a second track, “Fifteen”, and confirmed additional tour dates in Vancouver and Los Angeles.
