The Walking Dead will be ending after season 11, AMC has confirmed.
The network announced the surprising news today (September 9), detailing that the final season would consist of 24 episodes, with the first half due to air in 2021 and the second half in 2022.
Several spin-off projects remain in the works, with an untitled TV project focusing on Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) now green-lit and aiming for a 2023 release.
The two other TV spin-offs are Fear The Walking Dead, due to return this October, and The Walking Dead: World Beyond, also due for release this autumn.
A trilogy of films focusing on Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) are also in development, with Lincoln set to reprise his role.
The Walking Dead is currently working towards the release of the much-delayed and anticipated season 10 finale, titled ‘A Certain Doom’. It’s currently scheduled to air on AMC and Now TV on October 4-5.
The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang confirmed earlier this year at a virtual Comic-Con panel that fans can expect more episodes coming soon after the one-off finale.
“We’re excited to announce an extended season 10, there will be six extra episodes to follow the finale in early 2021, if all goes well,” she said.
Speaking to NME about the fate of his character Morgan in Fear The Walking Dead, Lennie James earlier this year: “He is a survivor, but in this universe, as it’s been proven over and over again on both The Walking Dead and Fear…, anybody’s time can be called.”
