Sometimes things just don’t work out the way you want them to.It seems like Tonight Alive have learned and remained vocal about that in the aftermath of 2016’s ‘Limitless’, an album that – with hindsight – never felt like a true representation of the band. With ‘Underworld’ though, it seems as though the sun is peaking through the clouds – and things are getting back on the right track.
The now-four-piece have never shied away from delving into whatever style they see fit in the moment, and ‘Underworld’ is at its most exciting when they really let loose. ‘Temple’ is a ’90’s-flavoured stomper up there with the finest songs they’ve ever penned, while the dreamy atmosphere of ‘Disappear’ (featuring PVRIS’ Lynn Gunn), and undeniable grooves driving ‘Crack My Heart’, demonstrate reinvention at its most invigorating. On the other hand, the balladry-based finale of ‘Looking For Heaven’ and ‘My Underworld’ feels a tad saccharine, and the likes of ‘For You’ and ‘Last Light’ get rather lost in the static.
Despite its more slippery moments, ‘Underworld’ finds Tonight Alive honing in on and owning their identity again; and given the bigger picture, taking a huge step in the right direction.
