The Batman movie

The first trailer for the upcoming, Matt Reeves-directed The Batman is here.

Reeves (Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) debuted the first look at the film –starring Robert Pattinson – during DC FanDome’s virtual event. The 2:23 minute trailer was shared by the film’s official Twitter page earlier today (August 23).

The fairly bleak trailer, soundtracked by Nirvana‘s dour ‘Something in the Way’, gives us our first insight into Pattinson’s portrayal of both the Dark Knight and Bruce Wayne.

Watch the trailer below:

A far cry from the sophisticated playboy of Christian Bale or Ben Affleck’s portrayal, Pattinson’s Wayne is a little darker and edgier, capturing The Bat not as a superhero but as a masked vigilante.

“What the hell are you supposed to be?” asks a thug before immediately facing a brutal beating from The Bat. “I’m vengeance,” replies Pattinson.

The trailer also gives us our first look at Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Paul Dano as The Riddler and Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman.

After initially being shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, production on the film is set to resume in the UK next month. The film has an expected US release date of October 1, 2021.

While further, concrete details about the film are yet to be revealed, in an interview with Den Of Geek, The Batman co-writer Mattson Tomlin has said the film will “explore trauma”, adding that Reeves is “always coming from a point of emotion”. Pattinson had teased an “interesting new direction” for the new imagining of the Gotham world late last year.
