It’s official – Battlefield 2042 is the next game in the Battlefield series.

And after weeks of speculation, it looks as though we’ll be able to get our hands on the upcoming Battlefield game in October 2021.

Developers EA DICE call Battlefield 2042 the “most ambitious” in the franchise yet, and with maps boasting up to 128 players, and a whole range of new weapons, gadgets and vehicles, there’s a lot to get to grips with.

Set in the ‘near-future’, Battlefield 2042 will thrust players into combat across vast regions including the Antarctic tundra and a neon-lit city skyline. But while the new Battlefield game won’t have a single-player mode, there are still a lot of new features to get excited about.

Here’s everything we know about Battlefield 2042:

It’s not here just yet – Battlefield 2042 is being released on October 22, 2021.

Available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, the new Battlefield game is available to pre-order now, with three different versions available.

The standard PS4, Xbox One and PC versions cost £59.99 while the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions cost £69.99. There’s also a Battlefield 2042 Gold Edition available for £89.99 on PC and £99.99 on console. The Ultimate Edition costs £109.99 on PC and £119.99 on consoles.

If you pre-order any of these editions, you’ll get access to the open beta.

During the highly-anticipated Battlefield 2042 reveal event, the first official trailer was revealed. And while it shows ‘in-engine’ footage, it’s sadly little more than an extended cinematic.

Thankfully, you won’t have to wait long for a look at its all-new gameplay.

According to EA Dice, Battlefield 2042 will be more of a sandbox-style game than previous instalments in the Battlefield franchise.

Maps will feature dynamic weather – including the all-powerful tornadoes we spotted in the reveal trailer. And with a host of new weapons, gadgets and vehicles, there’s plenty of new goodies to get your hands on.

But for now, we haven’t seen any of them in action.

The trailer gave us a good look at what we can expect from this near-future take on the Battlefield franchise, but if it’s gameplay you’re after, you’ll have to wait until the official gameplay reveal on June 13.

Battlefield 2042 beta and how to play it

If you’re looking to get your hands on Battlefield 2042 before it launches, you’re in luck – the upcoming game will be hosting a series of beta tests before launch.

The first of these is coming in July – EA DICE is hosting a technical playtest for US and EU veterans of the Battlefield series. The playtest is via invite-only and those who join in will be subject to a strict NDA.

But if you’ve pre-ordered Battlefield 2042 you’ll also get access to the open beta.

At the moment, no details have been released about this, so you may have to wait until it’s closer to the official launch.

Battlefield 2042 matches for up to 128 players

That’s right – Battlefield 2042 will double the size of its matches, up from 64 players in Battlefield V. It’s the first time the franchise has tried multiplayer maps on such a scale and puts Battlefield 2042 up there as one of the biggest multiplayer experiences you can get.

This means a bit of a change to the maps, too.

128 player maps will be divided into sectors – each one containing clusters of control points. Players will have to capture all control points to control the sector.

Battlefield 2042 specialists will replace classes

Introducing Specialists – the new sort-of-class system in Battlefield 2042. Essentially, the different specialists allow the use of different abilities and gadgets. But it’s more than that – they have names, backstories and can use any weapon you’ve unlocked.

The classic ‘assault’ and ‘recon’ classes are still there – sort of – but these are now categories of Specialists.

But gone are the days of Medics only having access to SMGs – the new flexible Specialists can mix and match the weapons you’ve unlocked with their unique abilities. At launch, that includes 10 Specialists – that’s 10 unique combinations of gadgets and abilities you can use alongside your favourite guns.

You can also swap out attachments on the fly, so you can tweak your loadout for specific situations as you go.

Battlefield 2042 modes – no single-player campaign, no battle royale

That’s right – there are no plans for a Battlefield 2042 battle royale. At least, not yet.

There’s no single-player either, so players will have to make do with the sprawling 128 player multiplayer modes.

EA DICE is calling its traditional Battlefield modes ‘All Out Warfare’ – including Conquest (your usual point capture mode) and Breakthrough.

But aside from this, there are also two new mystery modes.

One of these is called ‘Hazard’ and will apparently be a high-risk, squad-focussed mode. But that’s all EA DICE would say about it for now.

A third mode, which is yet to be named, has been confirmed and will be revealed at EA Play on July 22. It’s said to be a ‘love letter’ to fans of the Battlefield series, but what that means is really anyone’s guess.

We’ll find out more next month.

The near-future setting of Battlefield 2042 is promising, and gives us a number of cool new maps to fight in. And while we haven’t seen any official gameplay just yet, the new trailer has already hinted at what’s to come.

There are some big set pieces such as the rocket we saw in the first trailer, and with a range of settings from snow to cityscapes, there’s something to scratch every itch.

Here are the ‘All Out Warfare’ maps we know about so far:

Kaleidoscope: Sogdo, South Korea. Here, teams will clash over a ‘quantum powered disinformation hub’ after an attack threatens global comms networks.

Manifest: Brani Island, Singapore. Vital for American supply lines after the global warming collapse, this strategic choke point will prove pivotal in the battle.

Orbital: Kourou, French Guiana. Here, you’re fighting over the rocket launch site as seen in the official trailer. A space race like no other.

Discarded: Alang, India. The goal here is to secure rogue nuclear assets amid tidal extremes – presumably a consequence of that global warming we’ve seen.

Renewal: Eastern Desert, Egypt. Team will battle to take control of a ground-breaking ‘agricultural technology centre’ in the middle of the desert.

Hourglass: Doha, Qatar. Sandstorms ravage a city centre as you fight over a lost shipping convoy.

Breakaway: Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. The snowy tundra seen in the trailer, teams fight for control of oil and gas pipelines.

‘Battlefield 2042’ release date, Portal, maps and everything we know

Everything you need to know about the Battlefield 2042 release date, Portal mode, the game’s maps and when you will be able to play it.

EA officially announced the long-awaited Battlefield 2042 back in June after months of fan speculation, teases from development studio DICE, and hints from executives at Electronic Arts. After what seems like years of waiting for fans, the Battlefield 2042 release date was finally announced, alongside information about the Battlefield 2042 beta dates, an overview about Battlefield 2042 Portal – and much more information besides.

EA DICE, which has been working on the game for some time now, describes the new installment in the franchise as the “most ambitious” series entry yet. And once you take a look at the feature set, you can see why: the game will feature 128-player maps, AI bots, new weapons and gadgets, and a whole host of futuristic vehicles to play with, as well as introducing classic series maps in the mind-boggling Portal mode.

Battlefield 2042’s E3 trailer showed off seamless transitions between gunfights in the street, through buildings, and across rooftops. All of this happens while a sandstorm dominates the combat area, throwing planes, helicopters, and just about everything else, into skyscrapers.

The game is set in the ‘near-future’ and will take players to unique and carried regions including an Antarctic tundra, a sandstorm-covered metropolis, and a futuristic neon-lit city. For the first time in the series

EA DICE has confirmed the game will not feature a single-player mode. However, there’s plenty for fans to look forward to when Battlefield 2042 releases later this year.

Here’s everything we know about Battlefield 2042

A tweet from the official Battlefield account confirmed the news that Battlefield 2042 will now be released worldwide on November 19, 2021. That means that Battlefield 2042 will arrive a month later than originally planned and will launch two weeks after its main rival – Call of Duty: Vanguard.

In the statement, the Battlefield 2042 team explained how the global pandemic “has created unforeseen challenges for our development team” and that “given the scale and scope of the game,” the hope was that the development teams would be back in the studios nearer launch. As that is not happening, it was decided “to take the extra time to deliver on the vision of Battlefield 2042 for our players.”

Battlefield Portal mode

EA has revealed gameplay footage from Battlefield 2042’s “love letter” crossover mode Battlefield Portal.

The 80-second clip comes ahead of Battlefield 2042 being made available on early access from November 12 before its full launch on November 19.

“Today we showed you your first look at the Battle of the Bulge, El Alamein, Arica Harbor, Valparaiso, Noshahr Canals, and Caspian Border,” said EA in a statement on their website.

Portal has been described as a “love letter” crossover mode that pits factions from previous games against each other over a highly customisable mix of new and classic maps.

“Starting at launch, we’ll have default experiences live in-game that allow you to relive these classic maps, alongside their classic factions, equipped with the weapons, gadgets, and classes that brought them to life,” say EA.

At launch, five modes will be available within Portal – Conquest Large, Conquest, Rush, Free-For-All and Team Deathmatch – with players able to choose from a range of 128 maps.

EA has also published an extensive look at how the game can be modified, which can seen here.

“We’re beyond excited to open up the experience to every Battlefield fan across the world, and can’t wait to see what you make with it. It’s been a dream of ours to establish this toolbox for you, our fans, and this is just the beginning of this journey. “

On July 22, EA announced the second game mode for Battlefield 2042, titled Battlefield Portal. Described as a “love letter” to fans, Battlefield Portal will combine factions, weapons and more from previous Battlefield games in a mode that EA don’t plan on balancing much.

The game mode will bring back Rush, Conquest and Team Deathmatch modes and will have 13 maps at launch, including six fully remastered maps taken from Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3.

Battlefield Portal will be highly customisable by players through a Builder feature, which will open up options for users to create their own game modes, niche server rules and more.

As it’s a lot to break down, here’s all the new Battlefield Portal content (including maps, weapons, and more) that will be arriving at launch.

Battlefield 2042 reveal trailer

During the highly-anticipated Battlefield 2042 reveal event, the first official trailer was revealed. The ‘in-engine’ footage, shows off the kind of shenanigans that can be expected in multiplayer including jumping out of a plane to blow up another plane, in an extended cinematic.

Battlefield 2042 gameplay reveal

Thanks to Microsoft we got our first look at Battlefield 2042’s gameplay thanks to an explosive trailer which showed off impressive weather effects, vehicular combat, grappling hooks, and in-game weapon customisation.

According to EA Dice, Battlefield 2042 will be more of a sandbox-style game than previous instalments in the Battlefield franchise.

Maps will feature dynamic weather – including the all-powerful tornado and sandstorms that have been shown in trailers. This inclement weather is so powerful it tosses vehicles around like they’re toys.

The gameplay trailer also gave us our first look at the wingsuit, showing a rolling battle transition from street, to building interior, to rooftop, and back to street level thanks to the wingsuit – all in one seamless gameplay sequence.

Finally, we saw on the fly weapon customisation during a quieter moment, where an operator was able to take a few moments to swap through weapon attachments via an in-game holographic menu, tweaking their loadout to suit different engagement styles.

With more new gadgets, weapons and vehicles expected, this looks to be the biggest and boldest Battlefield yet.

Battlefield 2042 weather will affect player combat

The recent Battlefield 2042 trailer shows off some apocalyptic weather including a tornado, a sandstorm and some pretty intense arctic conditions.

Now, it looks as though those harsh conditions will directly affect the game’s combat.

Developers EA DICE recently showed off the game’s weather systems during the Xbox Games Showcase Extended. And you can expect those harsh conditions to directly impact how you play.

A sandstorm will sweep across the new Hourglass map – reducing player visibility and forcing gamers to adapt how they use their weapons, tanks and helicopters. It will even directly impact the map itself, causing lighting changes and debris that could pose a problem.

The tornado is an interesting concept, too – wreaking havoc as it twists across the map. Expect tanks and debris to get caught in its path. And don’t even think about stepping outside. Hunkering down and staying indoors is the best way to avoid getting caught up in it. Even if there are enemies at your door.

Battlefield 2042 wingsuit lets you ride the tornado

Adverse weather is going to play a big part in Battlefield 2042 but it’s not all bad.

During a recent EA Play event, EA DICE manager Oskar Gabrielson confirmed that players can actually ride the tornado using their wingsuits.

“We added a lot of really cool gear to the game – things like grappling hooks and wingsuits,” he explained.

“And then for some really cool reason, we said: ‘What about a real-time tornado?’ Real-time tornados are cool, right? What about adding one of those to Battlefield?’ And then what happens if you take that and combine it with a wingsuit, so you can kind of propel yourself to the other side of the map?”

Obviously, this opens up some interesting options for repositioning your squad and could even make the difference between winning and losing.

Riding a tornado is certainly one way to get an advantage in Battelfield 2042.

Battlefield 2042 beta and how to play it

Want to know how to join the Battlefield 2042 beta? In order to play the game before it launches, you’re going to need to sign up and jump through some hoops. The upcoming first-person shooter will be hosting a series of beta tests before launch, but entry will be pretty strict.

It has been confirmed that Battlefield 2042 and its next beta have been delayed but, fortunately, not for as long as earlier reports suggested.

According to a post in the r/GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit, Amazon customers are being sent redeemable codes to the Battlefield 2042 beta. They are seemingly getting the codes because they chose to purchase the title via Amazon – no other retailers have yet sent codes out, apparently.

Publisher EA or the game’s developer, DICE, have not yet updated us about when the open beta is taking place – we just know that it’s supposed to happen sometime in September (though time is obviously running out on that front).

The Battlefield 2042 product description reads: “Pre-order Battlefield 2042 for PC by September 23rd, 2021 to unlock early access to the Battlefield 2042 Open Beta.” That suggests the open beta could start any time now, since “codes will be sent within 24 hours of early access start date.”

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

Battlefield 2042 uses bots to keep servers full

That’s right – you may not always be up against other players. Battlefield 2042 uses bots to make sure those 128 player maps are bustling with troops.

A post on EA’s website confirms that Battlefield 2042 will fill servers with AI soldier – both enemies and allies – to make sure matches reach their full potential.

“As a multiplayer-only experience, it’s important for us to let you play Battlefield 2042 when and how you want,” they explained.

As a result, you’ll find AI soldiers in the following modes:

  • Multiplayer: Used for server-filling capabilities, ensuring matches remain full.
  • Co-op: Play together with friends, against AI soldiers.
  • Solo: Practice your kills by playing alone against AI soldiers.

Does this mean you can solo up on a server with 127 bots? It certainly looks that way.

Twitch streamer denies conning vulnerable men in love scam

The young streamer has already been banned twice in recent months

The post Twitch streamer denies conning vulnerable men in love scam appeared first on NME.

Singaporean Twitch streamer Kiaraakitty has denied accusations of conning multiple men in a money-making scam.

The young streamer had already been banned twice in recent months when a phone call was leaked to YouTube by an anonymous source, claiming that the audio recorded her admitting she had been involved in a series of love scams.

But the 18-year-old streamer, who has over 214,000 followers on Twitch, has denied the story as “false and staged” and says she has reported it to the police.

In the recorded call posted on YouTube, the woman claiming to be Kiarakitty says: “I know guys when they’re lonely, and when they don’t have a good family situation, they are very vulnerable, so I just know what kind of people to target.”

“I’ll ask them how’s life and let them open up, and when they open up, that’s when I know that I can take something from them.”

In the recording, the woman admits to scamming seven men – one of which she claims to have scammed for more than S$30,000 (£16,000).

“After he told me that he had some savings he got from national service – he signed up as a soldier and when he signed up he got some bonus, he got like, over S$30,000 from it – and I managed to scam everything off [him]. I took everything off [him]. I took all his freaking savings.”

Responding in a recent Instagram post, Kiaraakitty wrote: “Hi everyone, I heard some rumors about me, just to let you all know is false and staged.”

“Is so ridiculous that I made a police report and currently waiting for the police before I can let you all know what happens. Thank you so much for all your support and love to me.” There is currently no update about the police involvement.

‘No More Heroes’ and its sequel are coming to PC on June 9

Classic Wii hack-and-slash ‘No More Heroes’ appears on Steam for the first time

The post ‘No More Heroes’ and its sequel are coming to PC on June 9 appeared first on NME.

Grasshopper Manufacture’s Nintendo exclusive action-adventure No More Heroes will be available on PC from June 9.

No More Heroes and its sequel, No More Heroes 2 have been spotted on Steam – prompting an official announcement from publishers XSEED Game and Marvelous.

Both games will be available from June 9 – but the release has come as a bit of a surprise to fans of the series.

Although No More Heroes 3 is expected later this year, there has been no mention of any re-releases of the original games until now.

The listing states that these will be a ‘full HD remaster’ and not simple re-releases.

“As all-American otaku Travis Touchdown, use your trusty beam katana to hack-and-slash though the competition and claim the title of world’s #1 assassin!”

There are currently no prices listed for No More Heroes or No More Heroes 2 but you can already add them to your Steam wishlist.

The upcoming PC ports also include Steam achievements, Steam trading cards, Cloud saves, and text support for English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

However, the games won’t support keyboard and mouse – requiring a controller to play.

Both No More Heroes and No More Heroes 2 were recently given a HD remaster for the Nintendo Switch – increasing their resolutions to 1080p. Due to licensing issues, some songs had to be cut from the soundtrack.

However, it’s unclear whether the PC versions will be based on the existing Nintendo Switch remasters.

Elsewhere, Valve has announced changes to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, making a number of features unavailable to free players.

In a new blog on the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive website, it claims that “those benefits have become an incentive for bad actors to hurt the experience of both new and existing players.”

‘Far Cry 6’ is getting a brand new third-person mode

The new camera is designed to give players “more of a connection to Dani’s journey”

The post ‘Far Cry 6’ is getting a brand new third-person mode appeared first on NME.

NME

Ubisoft has confirmed that Far Cry 6 will switch between first and third-person modes.

Changing direction from its first-person roots, Far Cry 6 will feature moments where the game transitions into a third-person perspective.

Narrative director Navid Khavari told GameSpot that there are “a few reasons” for this.

“In cinematics, [third-person] is something the team tried early on, and it felt surprisingly seamless,” he explained. “It instantly felt like there was more of a connection to Dani’s journey in the world, more of a connection to this epic story in Yara.”

But it’s not just cinematics – third-person moments will appear throughout the game.

When entering guerrilla camps, for example, the point of view will shift into third-person, giving the player a much better view of Dani as they interact with the locals.

“Players will also be able to see their character customizations in these highly-realized story beats,” said Khavari. “In Guerrilla Camps, this is also an opportunity for players to be able to see their fully customized character, everything from their backpack to their clothes.”

This shifting perspective was already debuted in the Far Cry 6 trailer but was thought to be restricted to in-game cut-scenes. But the new third-person mode will also be found in combat.

“In the Supremo backpack moments during gameplay, the third-person transition is intended so players can see all of the backpack’s effects, and better feel its impact in action,” said Khavari.

Supremo backpacks allow the player to use jetpacks, rocket launchers and other unique weapons and gadgets.

As well as the new third-person mode, Far Cry 6 will also include a full co-operative mode.

During a lengthy Reddit AMA on Tuesday (June 1), Alexandre Letendre – game director for Far Cry 6 – confirmed that ” Far Cry 6 will come fully playable in co-op like FC5.”

‘Super Mario World’ goes widescreen next week thanks to a fan

Nintendo’s classic platformer is getting a widescreen emulation

The post ‘Super Mario World’ goes widescreen next week thanks to a fan appeared first on NME.

NME

A new Super Mario World emulation will finally let you play the classic Nintendo platformer in widescreen.

The 1990 SNES platformer Super Mario World is getting an upgrade thanks to emulation developer Vitor Vilela.

Super Mario World Widescreen has been set for launch ‘before E3 2021’ and will allow you to play the retro side-scroller in 16:9 aspect ratio – a big difference from its original 4:3 view.

“Once Super Mario World and Super Metroid widescreen patches are done, we will likely have a solid standard which future ROM modders will be able to apply to any SNES game,” Vilela told RetroRGB.

“That’s our objective. Any SNES game will be able to be adapted though ROM patches to use widescreen in the future once the project is stabilised.”

Emulators such a bsnes HD can already create Mode 7 backgrounds to emulate certain SNES games in widescreen.

This works well for the likes of Super Mario Kart and F-Zero, but the nature of side-scrolling platformers means that there’s a lot of extra work to get the same result.

Extending the screen means having to manually add new spawns for enemies that are further away than usual.

“This level has two foreground layers, where the second one moves back and forth,” explains Vilela.

Super Mario World Widescreen Credit: Vitor Vilela

“Both need to recognize the widescreen region, shift 3/6 columns to the left or to the right depending on the direction aimed. Ouch!!”

This additional work makes converting Super Mario World into widescreen a much more involved process than it first seems.

In other Nintendo news, the company has recently sued a rom site owner for £1.4million ($2.1 million) and won in a recent court case.

Matthew Storman owned and operated the site which allowed users to download ROMs until last year when he closed it at the request of Nintendo. TorrentFreak initially reported on the case over the weekend.

You can find a breakdown of the case here, which includes how Judge Marshall decided on the settlement figure.

A God of War game developer has been sent abusive messages following the announced delay to the upcoming sequel.

Two days ago, Sony confirmed that the God of War sequel has been pushed back to next year, to give developers at Sony Santa Monica more time to work on it.

It’s largely been seen as a positive announcement – avoiding crunch in favour of giving developers some breathing room – but some fans haven’t been so forgiving.

Alanah Pearce, a developer on the critically acclaimed franchise, revealed that she has already been sent abuse regarding the delay.

Pearce explains that sadly, this kind of abuse was almost expected – even when she first took the job.

“Anything people don’t like that happens at SMS in any capacity going forward, regardless of my involvement, will be considered to be my fault to a significant portion of the public and I was aware of that when I took the job,” she said.

Although Pearce has made light of the disturbing comments, saying: “I was on the phone to my partner when I got it and was like ‘OMG YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED, I’M A REAL GAME DEV!’”

In a follow up post God of War creative director Cory Balrog made a firm statement in support of his team.

“For real, y’all, this is some BULLSHIT!” he said via Twitter. “You want to be mad at somebody for ANYTHING GOW related – the delay, ps4/5, trolls, subtitle size, Sigrun, whatevs – be angry with me. I made the calls. I did this. Don’t bother the team, they are all very good people doing great work.”

“Every single human at the studio is there specifically because they are fucking EXCEPTIONAL at what they do,” he added. “We are better because of them. Hell, I am lucky anyone is willing to lend their talent and intellect to my bullshit. For some reason they do, and I love them for it.”

Someone is playing ‘Minecraft’ using a Bop-It as a controller

A Minecraft player has built a new controller for the game, made out of a Bop-It toy.

Seth Altobelli, an engineering student from the United States, created the controller by taking apart a Bop-It – the classic children’s toy – and rigging it up to use as a peripheral.

The entire process has been documented in a YouTube video:

Altobelli to repurposed the old toy into a new controller by adding an accelerometer as well as a Raspberry Pi Pico in order to let the controller communicate with the PC.

“There’s only one game that’s a true test of skill,” says Altobelli. “A game that separates the boys from the men, the humans from the pigs, the most influential scientific discovery of our era – the Bop-It.”

The children’s’ game – which was popular in the ‘90s – was used as a basis for the controller because it provides more of a challenge. The controller was made by Altobelli for fellow YouTuber Technoblade who beat Minecraft using a steering wheel just a few years ago.

“You can steer by tilting the Bop-It and then to walk you can press the front ‘Bop-It’ button, toggling it into walk mode,” explains Altobelli.

In other Minecraft news, the game is set to receive the first part of its next update, Caves & Cliffs, on June 8.

Mojang Studios has announced that the first part of the update – which has been split into two parts – will be released for the Java version of Minecraft, as well as Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on every platform it is currently available on, which includes Xbox Series X|SPS5Nintendo Switch, iOS and PC.

1.17 will be available on June 8, and contains new wildlife in the form of goats and axolotl, as well as a new enemy mob called the Warden, a blind mob that lurks in the Deep Dark Biome.
