STYX guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw spoke to the "Ted Nugent Spirit Campfire" show about the progress of the writing and recording sessions for the follow-up to "The Mission". Released in June 2017, that disc marked STYX's first new LP in 14 years. It was recorded at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, co-produced and co-written with Will Evankovich, a longtime collaborator of Shaw's in the SHAW/BLADES band and who also plays with THE GUESS WHO. "We've got all the drums, we've got all the basses [recorded]," Shaw said. "I think I've done all my guitars. I've done most of my vocals. We were writing and writing and writing. I got to the end of it. I had this other song. I was just burnt out. I was, like, 'I can't finish this song.' So I kind half-assed finished it. So I've gotta go in and do it right. "Lawrence [Gowan, vocals/keyboards] has already done a lot of his stuff," he continued. "There are a couple of new songs that came around since we were all together. So we have to flush all that out. Really, it's just Lawrence. And James Young [guitar/backing vocals] is coming. He's gonna be here for however long it takes to get his solos and his vocals done. And that just leaves Lawrence. So we'll be ready to mix before you know it." Drummer Todd Sucherman recently told Audio Ink Radio that the new STYX material "definitely leans to a progressive side with always a big, heavy emphasis on melody and lyrics. There are several songs and several lyrics in there that — I haven't even talked to Tommy about this — that are almost about what's going on in the world right now," he said. "It's like a prophecy, some of the bits in the lyrics… There's one song called 'Sound The Alarm' that I damn near stopped playing and burst into tears while rehearsing because it sounds like it was written about what's going on today, like he wrote it today. So next time I talk to Tommy, I've gotta ask him, 'What made you write that four months ago?'" During the late 1970s and early 1980s, four straight STYX albums sold at least two million copies — "The Grand Illusion" (1977), "Pieces Of Eight" (1978), "Cornerstone" (1979) and "Paradise Theatre" (1981). The band eventually replaced original singer/keyboardist/songwriter Dennis DeYoung in 1999 with Gowan.

Canadian singer, songwriter and producer Devin Townsend recently teamed up with the four members of SEPULTURA to record a quarantine version of SEPULTURA's "Mask", taken from the 2011 album "Kairos". He also took part in a live chat with SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser and vocalist Derrick Green. Check out video below. SEPULTURA's latest LP, "Quadra", was released on February 7 via Nuclear Blast Records. It is a concept effort created at Sweden's Fascination Street Studios with renowned producer Jens Bogren. SEPULTURA comprises vocalist Green, Kisser, bassist Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr., and drummer Eloy Casagrande. SEPULTURA was formed in Belo Horizonte by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, who are no longer with the band. "Quadra" is the follow-up to "Machine Messiah", which was SEPULTURA's fourteenth studio album and the eighth since Green joined the ranks. Last month, Devin released "Empath - The Ultimate Edition". This comprehensive version of 2019's acclaimed album contains the original record and bonus disc across 2 CDs, plus 2 Blu-ray discs. The first Blu-ray contains the 5.1 Surround Sound mix by Devin, with visuals for the full record, plus a stereo visualizer. The second Blu-ray contains a raft of bonus material, including "Acoustically Inclined - Live in Leeds", a recording from his April 2019 acoustic tour where he performed tracks including "Love?", "Deadhead", "Thing Beyond Things" and more. It also features the full "Empath" documentary, a "Genesis 5.1 Mixing Lesson", a full album commentary and more. The four discs sit inside a beautiful art-book that contains new liner notes and images from the making of the album. Townsend released "Empath" in March 2019 and embarked on the "Empath - European Tour Vol. 1" last November. Since disbanding the DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT, Devin has been tracking down players of excellence to form a new live band, the initial incarnation of which he presented via a video message in September. "Empath" saw Devin incorporating all the styles that make up his current interests in one place.

DAVID ELLEFSON: How ALICE IN CHAINS Ended Up Opening For MEGADETH, SLAYER And ANTHRAX

In a new interview with "The Network317 Podcast", David Ellefson was asked to name a band that opened for MEGADETH that really "blew his socks off." He responded (see video below): "I already knew of PANTERA — I was buddies with them; I had already jammed on stage with them — so when they came out with us, I already knew who they were and that they were really coming up the ranks. Same as STONE TEMPLE PILOTS; they were a new band. KORN, I remember getting the CD. Our management had sent out CDs and said, 'Hey, here's three or four bands that are in consideration. Why don't you guys listen to 'em and see which ones you like?' And I remember KORN was so wack. I mean, that first album, you're, like, 'This is bizarre.' And we took a chance on it. We thought, 'This is cool.' So we took a chance on them. And fortunately, the ones [that we took out] — STP and KORN and PANTERA and stuff, a lot of these bands went on to become bigger than MEGADETH at the time; they shot to superstardom." He continued: "I think the one that was the unexpected was ALICE IN CHAINS. They were put on some dates as we were finishing up the 'Rust In Peace' tour in Europe — this would have been spring of 1991 — and then we were gonna come home for about a month, and then we were gonna go out on the 'Clash Of The Titans' tour of the USA. And I'll never forget the day. It was at the Volkshaus in Zurich, Switzerland. And we walked in, and we saw the day sheet that had the schedule on it. We usually arrived around 4 o'clock, do soundcheck. And the dressing rooms were downstairs in that venue. And I remember me and Marty [Friedman, then-MEGADETH guitarist], we saw their name: ALICE IN CHAINS. We were, like, 'What the hell kind of band name is that? Is that a joke? What is that?' We didn't know. Because sometimes it would just say, 'Local support.' So their name was on there, and we were, like, 'Who are these guys?' And then when when they started playing — [around] 7 p.m. or whatever — we were downstairs and we heard them playing. We were, like, 'That sounds pretty good. Let's go and check 'em out.' And we went up and we watched them… And we were, like, 'Holy hell! This is amazing!' We were blown away. In fact, we immediately called our management back in the United States, and we had not picked an opening band yet for the 'Clash Of The Titans' tour. It was SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX, but there was gonna be an opener. So we called home and we went, 'We found the band: ALICE IN CHAINS. Call SLAYER's management, ANTHRAX's management. Work it out.' And Scott Ian [ANTHRAX guitarist] loved them; he knew of them. Scott's always pretty on the pulse with stuff, so he knew of 'em. So that's how they ended up on the 'Clash Of The Titans'. That was probably the big unexpected one." According to Ellefson, ALICE IN CHAINS wasn't received particularly well on the "Clash Of The Titans" tour. "They got pelted with trash on that, 'cause the thrash metal fans were, like, 'What the hell is this?'' David explained. "It was the new sound. So God bless the ALICE IN CHAINS guys, man. They sucked it up and they took their punches from our fans. And they went off to tour with VAN HALEN, and the rest is history. So they did very well." MEGADETH is working on its new album for a tentative early 2021 release. The early sessions for the LP took place last year with co-producer Chris Rakestraw, who previously worked on 2016's "Dystopia". MEGADETH's new effort will be the first to feature drummer Dirk Verbeuren (ex-SOILWORK), who joined the band four years ago. Guitarist Kiko Loureiro made his recording debut with MEGADETH on "Dystopia", whose title track was honored in the "Best Metal Performance" category at the 2017 Grammy Awards. As previously reported, MEGADETH's North American tour with LAMB OF GOD, TRIVIUM and IN FLAMES has been rescheduled for 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Friday, July 24, Gibson will celebrate 40 years of AC/DC's landmark album "Back In Black" with the "Back In Black 40th Anniversary: A Virtual Celebration" livestream event. Hosted by Jared James Nichols, the "Back In Black 40th Anniversary: A Virtual Celebration" will feature Slash, Sebastian Bach, members of ALICE IN CHAINS, CAGE THE ELEPHANT, ANTHRAX, TRIVIUM, LAMB OF GOD, REFUSED, AIRBOURNE, GWAR, Cherie Currie, Dave Amato, Orianthi, Sergio Vallin of MANA, Emily Wolfe, Brian Posehn, and many more. The special event will include AC/DC testimonials, appearances, tutorials and performances. Tune in on Friday, July 24 at 5:00 p.m. ET to watch the free livestream, "Back In Black 40th Anniversary: A Virtual Celebration" across the Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitch channels of Consequence Of Sound. Last December, "Back in Black" was certified by the Recording Industry Association Of America for U.S. shipments of 25 million copies. "Back in Black" first went platinum in October 1980 and had previously been certified 22 times platinum in December 2007. The RIAA lists "Back In Black" as the fourth biggest-selling album of all time. On July 25, 1980, AC/DC released "Back In Black" in the U.S., followed by the album's U.K. release on July 31. It was the band's first album without lead singer Bon Scott, who had died a few months earlier after passing out and choking on his own vomit following a long night of drinking. The group quickly decided to press on and hired Brian Johnson from the band GEORDIE to take over on vocals, and they headed to the Bahamas for about six weeks to do the album. AC/DC had made some serious headway in America before Scott's death, but no one knew how "Back In Black" would be received. Johnson told The Pulse of Radio that he didn't have a clue how successful "Back In Black" would turn out to be. "I'd just melted me brain in there, and I didn't know if it was good or bad," he said. "That was the first time I'd been in the Bahamas, anyway, or near America, you know, and you (have to) remember, I was just fascinated by the whole culture and all, and I had no idea what the hell I was doing! And (laughs) lucky, really — I was a bit lucky, I think." "Back In Black" included the singles "You Shook Me All Night Long", which peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Back In Black", which peaked at No. 37. Despite its massive success, it never got higher than No. 4 on the album charts. The band's next album, "For Those About To Rock", reached No. 1. "Back In Black" was produced by Robert "Mutt" Lange, who went on to produce DEF LEPPARD, FOREIGNER, THE CARS, and BRYAN ADAMS. In 2012, "Back In Black" was added to The Recording Academy's legendary Grammy Hall Of Fame collection. AC/DC recently launched a range of new merchandise to celebrate the 40th anniversary of "Back In Black".

Iconic By Collectionzz has released a new official screenprint celebrating the 30th anniversary of PANTERA's "Cowboys From Hell" album. The Basement in Dallas was the unofficial home base club in the early days of PANTERA, which shot three music videos in one day there: "Psycho Holiday", "Cemetery Gates" and "Cowboys From Hell". Three days before the release of "Cowboys From Hell", PANTERA played a record release party for everyone at The Basement, for which guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott created the original flyer. Iconic By Collectionzz is remembering that event 30 years later with a new limited-edition poster by Vance Kelly which incorporates many of the original design elements Dimebag created in the flyer, such as the barbed wire and dripping-blood PANTERA logo. The band recorded four independent albums before their 1990 major label debut, "Cowboys From Hell", introduced a heavier sound and made them a favorite with metal fans. 1994's "Far Beyond Driven" debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 without benefit of a commercial hit single. The group splintered in 2002 following the departure of volatile lead singer Philip Anselmo.

MICHAEL SWEET Defends CHRIS JERICHO Over Lip-Syncing Allegations: He ‘Doesn’t Have Anything To Prove As A Singer’

STRYPER's Michael Sweet has come to Chris Jericho's defense after Sebastian Bach accused FOZZY's lead singer of using pre-recorded vocal tracks during live performances. Last Thursday (July 16), Jericho challenged Bach to a "singoff" with "no effects, no tuning, no bullshit" in response to Sebastian's allegation that Chris "mimes to a tape" during FOZZY's live shows. "Bas is a great singer...but I'm better," Chris wrote on Twitter." The wrestler-turned-singer added: "I've never mimed anything ever! I will fucking sing in your face anytime, anyplace dude. I've been a fan & a defender of u since day one...but don't u ever question my rock abilities!" Bach fired back: " You're full of s*** bro. Every clip on the Internet is you miming to a tape. I will sing in your f****** face anytime. Wrestling is not rock and roll. I will show you f****** rock and roll. Check your texts set up The Sing-Off I am ready when you are". Earlier today, Sweet took to his social media to write: "You know it's funny, @chrisjerichofozzy doesn't have anything to prove as a singer, a wrestler or a person. He's achieved success and made quite the name for himself. He's about as active as anyone I know and is also a great guy with a big heart. He's also my friend. @stryper had him up on stage to perform with us at @hobanaheim and I was honored to have him sing on one of my solo songs a few years back as well. "My point? Chris is a very talented individual and a grounded human being. He doesn't need validation from anyone. He's made his mark and will continue to do so. He was at my wedding in 2010 and we had our own 'sing off' on the dance floor to the @bonjovi classic, 'Living On A Prayer' - Remember this Chris? Good times. "Anyway, I just wanted to say that Chris is the man, and a good one at that. Love ya buddy". Sweet himself was involved in a war of words with Bach nearly four years ago. The feud beween the former SKID ROW singer and the STRYPER frontman began in November 2016 when Sweet shared a video on Facebook of then-16-year-old emerging artist Moriah Formica perfoming the SKID ROW track "I Remember You", along with the caption: "Moriah Formica kills this and in my humble opinion, smokes the original singer." He also proceeded to call Bach a "tool" in the comments section after being questioned about the caption by a fan. After being alerted to Sweet's post by a fan, Sebastian fired back, writing in a tweet: "Michael Sweet has a big fucking mouth. Behind a keyboard that is. Can't wait to see this pussy in person again someday." While speaking to "The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show" at the "Bowl For Ronnie" event in Studio City, California, Bach was asked whether he likes Sweet on a personal level. "I don't, actually," he said. "I think STRYPER sucks. I've always thought that — since I was a little kid. I think their songs suck, I think their fucking clothes suck. Should I go on? What are they gonna [do] — whip a Bible at me? [Laughs]" After clarifying that his opinion of STRYPER doesn't have anything to do with the Christian messages in the band's lyrics, Bach said: "I think they just make bad records. And I don't think they ever did make good records." In November 2016, Sweet released a statement in response to Bach's "pussy" comment, saying that "anyone who knows me knows that I express my opinion and I'm more than willing to back it up. I do my best to be honest yet not to be mean-spirited or destructive. I'm also no pussy. Obviously, Sebastian doesn't know me, because if he did, he'd know that as fact." He added: "Unfortunately, I think because I'm a Christian, some people think that I'm supposed to 'turn the other cheek' and let people say and do whatever they want. I guess the 'pussy' in me won't let me do that." Sebastian and Michael previously traded barbs nearly six years ago when the STRYPER leader claimed he was asked to produce a Bach solo album, only for those plans to be squashed because Sebastian couldn't make up his mind. Sweet said: "I was approached to do a Sebastian album… to produce it and to co-write with him and basically try to kind of go back to those powerful songs from the past. Not make a dated record, but just that style, the anthemy SKID ROW stuff that everybody loves. And that was the plan." Michael also offered a theory as to why so few of Bach's eight hundred thousand Facebook followers purchased the former SKID ROW singer's latest solo album, "Give 'Em Hell", when it was first released. Sweet said: "This isn't a bash against Sebastian at all; it's just my opinion. I think people wanna hear Sebastian of old. They wanna hear the SKID ROW Sebastian. They wanna hear the hits. And he's giving them modern rock. It's ['Give 'Em Hell'] a good album, it's a good-sounding album, but it's not the glory days." After a fan wrote on Twitter that "the points M. Sweet made about fans wanting 'old school' Bach sounds - are ACCURATE. Not rude or mean. Just true," Bach responded: "ACCURATE? FACT: No member of STRYPER was EVER asked to produce ANY album by Sebastian Bach! EVER. Who do U think asks that?? Omg!" Sweet later took to his own Twitter to clarify his proposed role in the making of Bach's solo album. Michael wrote: "I was asked by the LABEL to produce Sebastian Bach. I never said by Sebastian."

Limbo – GAEREA

If you can cast your mind back as far as 2018 (and you are forgiven if you're currently struggling to remember what you had for breakfast), GAEREA released one of the very finest black metal albums of that year, the subtly eccentric "Unsettling Whispers"; released through remarkably consistent Mumbai imprint Transcending Obscurity. If you've heard that record, the fact that the Portuguese were swiftly snapped up by Season Of Mist will make perfect sense, because despite being recognizable as a black metal band of some description, GAEREA conjured a huge amount of their own, unique sense of weirdness and disquiet. Two years on, "Limbo" feels even further away from any standard notions of a left-hand path, with songs that ebb and flow with tectonic surety and a sense of bowing to nature's remorseless grind that frequently feels more Icelandic — echoing the likes of ALMYRKVI and SVARTIDAUDI — than Iberian. Either way, GAEREA have produced a near-masterpiece here, summoning levels of aggression that we don't normally associate with the artful, atmospheric end of the underground metal spectrum, while also embracing a more widescreen, post-rock-tinged vision, wherein fury is counterbalanced by a whole heap of misty-eyed melancholy. Opener "To Ain" contains all of this and more, veering from ominous ambience to all-out assault with seamless verve, stopping off to march through an avalanche of icily overwrought melodic motifs, the band's unnamed members vigorously willing each other on through every vital change of pace or mood. "Null" is a more succinct variation on the theme, but with a lethal central hook and enough cataclysmic double-kicks to reduce mountains to dust, the song's sonic perversities squirm delightedly in the background, inspirational grist to the unrelenting metallic mill. Black metal tends to deal in unremitting darkness, and despite those occasional forays into shoegaze or post-rock, "Limbo" is an album that belongs to a lightless and pessimistic world. You can feel the 2020's tensions crackling and twitching amid the blurred savagery of "Glare" and the sprawling "Conspiranoia", and while GAEREA remain cryptic and mysterious to the last, it doesn't take a genius to infer that they might not be the greatest fans of humanity or cheerleaders for mankind's future prospects. With that in mind, the closing "Mare", all 13 crushing and crestfallen minutes of it, provides the perfect soundtrack to our well-deserved end of days: like a turbocharged and multi-dimensional expansion of all the wicked and warped ideas explored in five previous songs, it's such a brutish whipping away of the cosmic tablecloth that you can expect most of your emotional crockery to be hurled skyward as dissonance is wielded as a weapon of nihilistic exaltation to the eternal void. This year in a grim but gripping nutshell, then. "Limbo" may amount to one, long howl of hopelessness, but it's full of promise and dark magic too.

YouTube user Lars Von Retriever, who splices together excerpts from President Donald Trump's speeches to popular metal songs as part of a series he calls "Metal Trump", has uploaded his latest concoction, Metal Trump's take on the IRON MAIDEN classic "Run To The Hills". Check it out below. Lars Von Retriever's previously crafted Metal Trump videos include songs from METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, MARILYN MANSON, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and DISTURBED. In a 2017 interview with Noisey, IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson explained why his autobiography, "What Does This Button Do?", contains very few mentions of politics. He said: "I'm a musician. Do I have political views? Yes. Is an autobiography a place to put them? No. What that does is that it attaches an inordinate amount of weight and self-importance to your own political viewpoint, which, if people want to hear your political viewpoint, then be a politician! Join a political party or do whatever. Stand up and say, 'I think you need to hear my political views because I'm especially qualified to tell you why you should do what I think.' I don't have any of that special sauce. I've got no crystal ball. I'm no expert witness on stuff. If you want to hear about what I think about politics, I'll tell you, but why does it matter? I'm just one citizen out of millions and I have one vote and so does everyone else. The fact that I'm famous for being a musician or doing whatever, sorry, it's not enough reason other than salacious curiosity or an attempt to dig up a story which they can then immediately slap down. "But I would fit somewhere," he continued. "I'm right of center, but not very far. Put it this way. I'm not a socialist at all but I do believe in a nice humanistic approach to the way society should be run. I think there's a difference between profit and greed. I think profit is a way of measuring how efficiently a business or a society is being run. Greed is just evidence of its corruption and fecundity. I'm not a fan of greed. For those reasons, some of the Thatcher years were appalling, but at the same time, what happened to the U.K. during those years was transformative. Because at the end of the '70s, we were toast. The country was washed up. At the end of the '80s, it was not. In between was a whole other thing, some of which I didn't agree with, but every politician makes mistakes. "When you get to the extremes, people exclude people," Bruce added. "When you're somewhere in the middle, people include people. I would agree with some statements. In America, I would be hopeless. I would have one foot in the Democratic camp and one foot in the Republican camp. Because I agree with some Republicans. I agree with some Democrats. Where do I fit? I'm a contrarian. I make up my mind on each individual issue what I think. That's not necessarily in line with a political party, you know? In the middle is where healthy societies belong. Occasionally when things fail, they need a bit of a shock. Hopefully, they will bring things back to the middle."

Paul Stanley has offered his words of support to Kim Kardashian West for speaking out after husband Kanye West posted a series of tweets this week that have called his mental health into question. On Monday night, Kanye tweeted allegations that Kardashian and her mom Kris Jenner had tried to "lock him up," and on Tuesday night, he claimed that he had been considering divorcing his wife. Kardashian issued a lengthy statement on Instagram defending West, explaining that he has bipolar disorder, a lifelong mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs and lows. "As many of you know, Kanye has bi-polar disorder," she wrote. "Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand. I've never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye's right to privacy when it comes to his health. But today, I feel like I should comment on it because of the stigma and misconceptions about mental health. "Those that understand mental illness or even compulsive behavior know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor," she said. "People who are unaware or far removed from this experience can be judgmental and not understand that the individual themselves have to engage in the process of getting help no matter how hard family and friends try." Earlier today, Stanley shared Kardashian's comments on Twitter and added the following message: "Let's have compassion and commend this. So many struggle with mental illness and depression and we can all make a difference." In a 2018 interview with The New York Times, West said that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2017. West, who announced July 4 that he was running for president, delivered a lengthy monologue at a campaign event last weekend, touching on topics from abortion to Harriet Tubman.
