NEW YEARS DAY singer Ash Costello has entered the studio to begin work on the the follow-up to 2019's "Unbreakable" album. Earlier today, Costello posted a photo of her and co-producer Scott Stevens (HALESTORM, SHINEDOWN) in the studio wearing masks, and she included the following message: "recording in 2020 DAY 1- I have so much to say and I've found my voice now more than ever. Back in @exiesscott studio (masks and shields of course) the man that helped create #Unbreakable along with @mitcheymitch .... I am so ready to create more magic. I'm not the person you think that I am. Leave some [love] if you're ready for new music" Costello recently confirmed to U.K.'s Rock Sound that NEW YEARS DAY has been using the coronavirus downtime to start work on material for its new LP. Speaking about how the creative process is taking place, Ash said: "I actually just talked to one of my producers yesterday. So it really depends on the producer's comfort level. I've seen musicians online in the studio with a producer with a mask on or whatnot. But his studio is in his house, and his wife, she does not want musicians coming in and out. I totally respect it — I respect that completely; who knows where we've been? So it really depends on the producer. In this particular case, he can't have people over, so we thought we're gonna buy me some recording gear and he's gonna take over my screen and do, like, mirroring and do all of the engineering and I'll just have to sing… I was, like, 'I don't have to sit in L.A. traffic. Why haven't we always been doing this? It's way better.'" According to Ash, she and her bandmates have discussed the possibility of composing new music over Zoom. "When we're together, there's a vibe, and that's really what is driving the song forward," she said. "You have to be there, feeling it out and getting excited or seeing the vibe, like, 'Oh, maybe that wasn't a good idea.' You feel stuff. So it's definitely going to be different. It's going to be new — that's for sure." Asked how she stays creative in a time like this, Ash said: "I can only speak personally for me, but I feel just as creative as I ever have. And what's nice is I just have a little bit more downtime to focus on it, so that's actually pretty helpful." This past May, NEW YEARS DAY released the official music video for "Skeletons". The song is taken from "Unbreakable", which was released in April 2019 to critical acclaim. The band enlisted powerhouse producers Mitchell Marlow (ALL THAT REMAINS, IN THIS MOMENT) and Stevens to create an album that combines heavy rock with pop sensibilities. This past January, NEW YEARS DAY released "Through The Years", a limited-edition box set featuring all seven of NEW YEARS DAY's albums on custom-colored vinyl, a Blu-ray of their beloved music videos and a four-page picture book of never-before-seen photos of Ash and NEW YEARS DAY from their humble beginnings. The photos were handpicked and the captions were hand written by Costello.

Guitarist Erik Ferentinos, who has played with RATT singer Stephen Pearcy for nearly two decades, spoke to All Music/All Bands about Pearcy's forthcoming solo album. He said: "Stephen and I started working on his new solo record late last year. He is currently getting a deal together to release that. He also mentioned something about a best-of compilation." Regarding the songwriting process for the new LP, Ferentinos said: "[Stephen] and I are usually the two main songwriters. I'll usually write and arrange the song compositions and then he writes his vocals to it." On the topic of the musical direction of the next Pearcy album, Ferentinos said: "The new record will have the '80s rock sound that fans have come to expect from us with a few surprises thrown in for good measure. There are some heavy bangers on there that the RATT fans will love. I try to keep it edgy, but I want us to have a hit. I'm always trying to top what we've done so far, with catchier riffs and melodies to get more fans interested in our music." According to Ferentinos, Pearcy's new record will "hopefully" be released by the summer of 2021. Stephen's most recent release was the "All That I Want" solo single, He told Marci Wiser of the 95.5 KLOS radio station: "I didn't know where that song was gonna end up — a RATT song or solo — so I decided it's just gonna be put out there." Asked if the track will appear on a full-length album at some point in the future, Pearcy said: "No. It's just a song. That's all I do is write with Erik Ferentinos, a co-writer friend of mine, been in my band forever, solo band. And it's all good. We just write and if we feel it fits to be heard, we put it out." As for the lyrical inspiration for "All That I Want", Pearcy said: "It's a relationship song, and it just felt right for the times. Everybody's locked up, and what's really important to you? Your partner — somebody close to you, somebody to dig, love." This past March, Pearcy released another new solo song called "Making Crazy". Pearcy's fifth solo LP, "View To A Thrill", came out in November 2018 via Frontiers Music Srl. The follow-up to 2017's "Smash" was produced by Matt Thorne and Pearcy and was mixed and mastered by Thorne and Ferentinos. Pearcy and bassist Juan Croucier are the sole remaining original members in RATT's current lineup, which made its live debut in July 2018 in Mulvane, Kansas. Joining them in the band are drummer Pete Holmes (BLACK 'N BLUE, RATT'S JUAN CROUCIER) and guitarist Jordan Ziff (RAZER). Pearcy told Sleaze Roxx that Erik was briefly considered for a position in RATT before Ziff and now-former RATT guitarist Chris Sanders (BRITNY FOX, KNIGHT FURY) came along. "He's literally been in my band for years, in my solo band," he said. "He's a big part of my life, my solo records, the mixing, the engineering, just everything. I mean, we're like a team when I go in to do my solo records with Matt Thorne in the studio, and Erik and myself. We get in there and there is no stopping us, so I wanted to keep that a little separate, but he's always ready to go at any moment. He's a total professional."

DEE SNIDER Is ‘Big’ On Trolling People On Twitter

In a new interview with KNAC.COM, TWISTED SISTER singer Dee Snider was asked what his favorite social media platform is and why. He responded: "The one that I'm most active on is Twitter. It was my first one, I'm also on Facebook and Instagram, and I have a loyal following on those too. Twitter would be my favorite, I think, because it just has this ease of use. It's also got this immediacy of reaction. I liken it to back in the day when you were on the radio and you talked about something and you reacted, so the phones would light up. It's that immediacy of something that you said and it connected with people. I see a lot of that on Twitter — there's responses, there's likes and there's shares. I use Twitter as a rule, though I often wonder what I'm missing out on by not being as active on some of the other platforms." Snider went on to say that "there is an exchange of ideas" on Twitter. "I think that's something that has been lost and I'm trying to encourage more of that," he explained. "I think things have been getting a lot more political lately as we get closer and closer to the election. I think it's time to take a position. But having said that, I'm trying to keep the conversation going. There are times where people come back really fixed on their position, [and] I do a quick 'troll' on them. I'm big on 'trolling' them. [Laughs] I look and I see what they are about. I'm, like, 'Crap. They've been to Sturgis. I've been to Sturgis. They ride a bike. I ride a bike. They love the freedom of riding and the camaraderie and the unity.' We are so similar and we have so much in common, but where is the 'unity'? We should be able to talk about this, rather than to scream at each other." Snider will release "For The Love Of Metal Live!" on July 31 via Napalm Records. The DVD/Blu-ray and accompanying live album (available in various formats) features audio captured from several Snider festival performances worldwide — from the United States to Europe, Australia and beyond. In addition to tracks from Snider's solo catalog, like "I Am The Hurricane" and "For The Love Of Metal", TWISTED SISTER favorites such as "I Wanna Rock" and "We're Not Gonna Take It", and even a cover of AC/DC's "Highway To Hell", the audio portion of "For The Love Of Metal Live!" also features a brand new original studio track, "Prove Me Wrong". TWISTED SISTER called it quits in 2016 after completing a farewell 40th-anniversary tour. Photo credit: John Raptis

JESSE LEACH Says New TIMES OF GRACE Album Is Less Metalcore And More Of A ‘Rock And Roll Experimental Record’

BLABBERMOUTH.NET

In a new interview with Revolver, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE singer Jesse Leach spoke about the progress of the recording sessions for the new LP from TIMES OF GRACE, his collaborative project with KILLSWITCH ENGAGE guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz. "The album is done," he said (see video below). "We have two quarantine versions of a song [being released soon]. One is an old-school one reworked. The other one is a new cover that you won't see on this next record. 'Cause it's not just not one record — it's gonna be a record and another release. And we hope to have it out this year." Regarding the musical direction of the new TIMES OF GRACE material, Jesse said: "It's definitely different from the last record. We decided to really sort of set ourselves apart from the KILLSWITCH sound. I think the last record had a lot of KILLSWITCH in it, and we made a conscious departure to write more artistically indulgent songs, a little more rock-orientated, some post-metal, I guess, if you will — effects-driven guitars, very big, atmospheric-sounding stuff and acousticy, more blues, rock-driven stuff as well. So there's less of the quote-unquote metalcorish genre and more of a genuine heavy metal, rock and roll experimental record. And I'm super stoked on it — I'm very proud of it. And I will say this too — Adam takes center stage a lot more on this record. It's very much a 50/50 album when it comes to vocals. You're gonna hear a lot more of Adam's voice, and he has come such a long way with his voice and his lyrics. I'm so proud of him. I think it's the best work that we have done as musicians in this particular genre ever, I would say." TIMES OF GRACE originally entered Signature Sound studio in San Diego, California in late 2017 to begin recording material for its new LP. Sitting behind the drum kit during the sessions was Dan Gluszak, who previously played drums for TIMES OF GRACE on tour and has since been named an official member of the band. Three years ago, Leach said that TIMES OF GRACE's new material was "shaping up to be a whole different world of sound and words. I will be using different melodic registers and less growl substituted by more 'melodic yelling,'" he said. "The lyrics are primarily quite melancholy so far but most of my lyrics often do begin that way and find light as the process unfolds." TIMES OF GRACE's debut album, "The Hymn Of A Broken Man", was released in January 2011 via Roadrunner Records. The CD sold around 10,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 44 on The Billboard 200 chart. Dutkiewicz and Leach originally worked together on KILLSWITCH ENGAGE's benchmark album, 2002's "Alive Or Just Breathing". That record has become definitive for an entire generation of American metal, with Leach's voice and uplifting lyrics serving as one of the key elements that propelled the album to "modern classic" status. Leach left KILLSWITCH ENGAGE shortly after "Alive Or Just Breathing"'s release but rejoined the group in early 2012 following the departure of his replacement, Howard Jones.

Kirk Windstein spoke to Revolver about his participation in DOWN's upcoming shows to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the group's debut album, "NOLA". A founding member of DOWN, Windstein left the band in 2013 in order to focus on CROWBAR and his family life. He was replaced by Bobby Landgraf, DOWN's former guitar tech who was previously in GAHDZILLA MOTOR COMPANY, a 1990s outfit also featuring Jason McMaster (DANGEROUS TOYS, WATCHTOWER), and HONKY. Windstein announced his return to DOWN last year, with the band confirming a number of festival appearances for 2020, all of which have since been canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic which is sweeping the globe. Asked if DOWN has started work on new material, Kirk told Revolver (see video below): "There's actually been no talk of that. The main thing was trying to do the European festivals and Psycho Las Vegas [in Las Vegas]. Psycho Las Vegas was pushed back a year, and, obviously, the European festivals were all canceled. So I have no idea what's in the future. We're working on something really special here in the next few months that I'm excited about, and that's all I can really say. I'm super excited to get together with all the guys again." DOWN was forced to cancel a number of shows in 2016 after singer Philip Anselmo was filmed giving a Nazi salute and shouting "white power" at a California concert. Guitarist Pepper Keenan later offered his take on what transpired, telling Metal Wani that DOWN was "far from done" after the controversial incident. "You know, DOWN didn't do anything wrong," he said. "I mean, we were just guilty by association on that one. That was Phil's mistake. I've spoken to Phil and told him to get his shit together, and he is. He knows he made a mistake and was being stupid." He continued: "I've known the guy [most of my life]. He's not what that whole thing framed him to be at all. But, yeah, there's definitely a future for DOWN. I wouldn't throw all the shit we've done, beautiful music we've done on one stupid moment that was caught on camera, and he apologized for. [So we are] far from done." DOWN's last live appearance took place in August 2016 at the Psycho Las Vegas festival in Las Vegas. Windstein released his debut solo album, "Dream In Motion", in January via Entertainment One (eOne).

THE PRETTY RECKLESS’s TAYLOR MOMSEN Wore Masks On Airplanes Even Before COVID-19 Pandemic

In a new interview with Marci Wiser of the 95.5 KLOS radio station, THE PRETTY RECKLESS frontwoman Taylor Momsen spoke about the prospect of playing live shows in states where concerts are currently allowed amid the coronavirus pandemic. She said (hear audio below): "That makes me nervous. I'm a hypochondriac and a freak about this stuff anyway. I wear masks on airplanes regardless. I think it stems from being a singer and touring and just desperately trying to not get sick on tour. When you're sick on tour, it's awful. There's no time to recover, and you kind of never get better; you just kind of suffer through the rest of that leg. You're never 100 percent again until the tour is over. So my paranoia of the Purell [hand sanitizer] and the masks and everything, it's not too different now that I don't leave the house." THE PRETTY RECKLESS's fourth album, "Death By Rock And Roll", will be released in early 2021 via Fearless Records in the U.S. and Century Media Records in the rest of the world. The title track was made available in May. Momsen confirmed in an interview that RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE guitarist Tom Morello guests on "Death By Rock And Roll". Morello appears on a track called "And So It Went". Morello joins previously announced guests Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron from SOUNDGARDEN. The song with Cameron and Thayil, called "Only Love Can Save Me Now", was recorded at Seattle's legendary London Bridge Studios, where seminal LPs like PEARL JAM's "Ten" and SOUNDGARDEN's "Louder Than Love" were laid down. Momsen recently said that she was "devastated" by the death of SOUNDGARDEN singer Chris Cornell. THE PRETTY RECKLESS opened for SOUNDGARDEN in Detroit on May 17, 2017, a couple of hours before Cornell apparently committed suicide by hanging. Less than a year later, in April 2018, THE PRETTY RECKLESS's producer Kato Khandwala died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

A video of legendary rockers AC/DC performing the song "You Shook Me All Night Long" live in Tokyo in 1981 can be seen below. The clip was uploaded to the band's official YouTube channel as part of the 40th-anniversary celebrations of AC/DC's classic 1980 album "Back In Black". Last December, "Back in Black" was certified by the Recording Industry Association Of America for U.S. shipments of 25 million copies. "Back in Black" first went platinum in October 1980 and had previously been certified 22 times platinum in December 2007. The RIAA lists "Back In Black" as the fourth biggest-selling album of all time. On July 25, 1980, AC/DC released "Back In Black" in the U.S., followed by the album's U.K. release on July 31. It was the band's first album without lead singer Bon Scott, who had died a few months earlier after passing out and choking on his own vomit following a long night of drinking. The group quickly decided to press on and hired Brian Johnson from the band GEORDIE to take over on vocals, and they headed to the Bahamas for about six weeks to do the album. AC/DC had made some serious headway in America before Scott's death, but no one knew how "Back In Black" would be received. Johnson told The Pulse of Radio that he didn't have a clue how successful "Back In Black" would turn out to be. "I'd just melted me brain in there, and I didn't know if it was good or bad," he said. "That was the first time I'd been in the Bahamas, anyway, or near America, you know, and you (have to) remember, I was just fascinated by the whole culture and all, and I had no idea what the hell I was doing! And (laughs) lucky, really — I was a bit lucky, I think." "Back In Black" included the singles "You Shook Me All Night Long", which peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Back In Black", which peaked at No. 37. Despite its massive success, it never got higher than No. 4 on the album charts. The band's next album, "For Those About To Rock", reached No. 1. "Back In Black" was produced by Robert "Mutt" Lange, who went on to produce DEF LEPPARD, FOREIGNER, THE CARS, and BRYAN ADAMS. In 2012, "Back In Black" was added to The Recording Academy's legendary Grammy Hall Of Fame collection. AC/DC recently launched a range of new merchandise to celebrate the 40th anniversary of "Back In Black".

LAMB OF GOD’s WILLIE ADLER: ‘I Can’t Imagine That Live Music Will Not Resume At Some Point’

In a new interview with No Cover TV, LAMB OF GOD guitarist Willie Adler spoke about what the touring circuit might look like post-pandemic. He said (hear audio below): "I can't imagine that live music will not resume at some point. It's probably gonna be a while, and like I was telling my wife, I think we're probably bottom of the barrel of things that are gonna be able to get back to work. I mean, for our living, we get people together. So it's, like, 'Fuck.' So, yeah, there's definitely a part of me that's a little freaked out by it, but at the same time, it's such a huge part of life — music is — that I can't imagine there not being some semblance of live music going on and touring. Whether that's end of this year, next year — I'm not sure. But I firmly believe that we will resume somewhat as normal at some point." In the face of the coronavirus pandemic, thousands of concerts and festivals have either been postponed or canceled, as social distancing and self-quarantining make performing live music and attending live shows all but impossible. As previously reported, LAMB OF GOD's North American tour with MEGADETH, TRIVIUM and IN FLAMES has been rescheduled for 2021. LAMB OF GOD released its new, self-titled album on June 19 via Epic Records in the U.S. and Nuclear Blast Records in Europe. The follow-up to 2015's "VII: Sturm Und Drang" marks LAMB OF GOD's first recordings with Art Cruz, who joined the band last year as the replacement for the group's founding drummer, Chris Adler, who is Willie's brother. "Lamb Of God" was recorded with longtime producer Josh Wilbur (KORN, MEGADETH, GOJIRA, TRIVIUM) and includes special guest appearances by Jamey Jasta (HATEBREED) and Chuck Billy (TESTAMENT).

Video of California rockers PAPA ROACH performing the song "Binge" as part of their second live streaming experience iteration called "Infest In-Studio" can be seen below. The program was a special virtually ticketed, live HD broadcast, which took place June 20 from Sacramento, and it featured PAPA ROACH performing its multi-platinum, classic album "Infest", live in its entirety to celebrate the LP's 20th anniversary, along with exclusive discussions and reflections in a unique studio environment. "We couldn't take not performing any longer," said frontman Jacoby Shaddix. "Having performed the 'Infest' album in full as a surprise one time before (during the band's sold-out 2015 gig at London's Roundhouse on the album's 15th anniversary), we decided to open this infestation to every living-room in the world to celebrate the 20th anniversary with us!" PAPA ROACH's first live streaming event, "Infest In-Conversation", broadcast on the 20th anniversary of "Infest"'s release (April 25, 2020), drew 1.8 million live viewers on five platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Twitch, YouTube and VK. That program featured the band showing rare videos and photos and reminiscing with each other for nearly four hours along with members of DEFTONES, LINKIN PARK, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, KORN, as well as with Dave Buckner (the band's original drummer and founding member) and director Marcos Siega (Grammy-nominated director of the "Last Resort" and "Broken Home" music videos). "Infest In-Studio" was co-produced by Papa Roach Productions and 10th Street Entertainment and directed by Push. It is available for streaming exclusively via VierLive.com. "Infest" peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart and has been certified triple platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association Of America) for sales in excess of three million copies in the U.S. alone. The album featured the iconic hits "Last Resort" and "Broken Home" plus fan favorites "Blood Brothers" and "Between Angels & Insects". This past February, Shaddix said that plans were afoot for PAPA ROACH to mark the LP's two-decade milestone. "We've done some really cool things in the studio around some of the previous recordings, and we have some awesome stuff to release here throughout the year, so we're going to celebrate this album for sure — one hundred percent, definitely," the singer said. Shaddix also spoke about the enduring popularity of "Infest"'s rap-rock anthem "Last Resort", which recently passed 100 million views on YouTube. "That's our classic," he said. "That thing, it's given us such a relevance, even in pop culture. People are making memes — 'Cut my life into pizza.' I love that. 'Cause now I don't take it all too seriously, because it's embedded itself into pop culture, but then also the reality is that it's spoken to a lot of people's hearts that have been in that darkness, and going, 'Hey, man, there's some hope. You can come out of this. You don't have to stay in there.'" Earlier in the year, PAPA ROACH completed a European tour with ICE NINE KILLS and HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD.
