Astro's Playroom

The developer behind PS5 launch title Astro’s Playroom is working on its next title, which it describes as a “3D action game”.

The detail comes from a job listing on LinkedIn (as spotted by VGC). The role is “centered around Level Design”, and the successful applicant will be charged with making “a variety of levels for a 3D action game, each providing great tempo and creative situations.” They will also be responsible for “generating gameplay ideas and supervising their implementation.”

Although the listing doesn’t specify what the in-development title is, developers Team Asobi have so far only made games involving Astro, the diminutive robot whose adventures often serve to introduce new hardware or features for Sony’s consoles while doubling as a love letter to PlayStation history.

The studio’s first game was 2013’s The Playroom, a minigame collection that was pre-installed on PlayStation 4 consoles, highlighting the features of the PS4 camera and DualShock 4 controller. 2016’s The Playroom VR and 2018’s Astro Bot Rescue Mission were similarly focused on showcasing the PlayStation VR headset.

With Sony gearing up to launch a PSVR successor, reportedly set for launch by Christmas 2022, another Astro outing for the improved headset is perhaps the most likely project to be in the works at Team Asobi.

The still-unnamed ‘PSVR2’ will reportedly offer 4K resolution, along with a simplified connection to PS5 consoles that will only require one cable, rather than the break-out box and viper’s nest of wires that the current PSVR needs to hook up to PS4.

So far though, the only firm details Sony has revealed on its next-gen virtual reality headset is the controllers, which are set to evolve into Oculus Quest-style grips and feature advanced haptics similar to those found in the PS5’s DualSense controller.
