Juror from Gwyneth Paltrow ski slope trial explains unanimous win

“I didn’t feel that she had a reason to lie under oath”

One of the jurors in the recent Gwyneth Paltrow ski slope trial case has opened up about the jury’s final verdict in favour of the award-winning actress.

Samantha Imrie, who was Juror Number 11 in the case, revealed that it only took a few hours for the jury to reach a verdict – although she did admit to being indecisive throughout the trial.

Retired optometrist Terry Sanderson sued Paltrow for $300,000 – alleging that she injured him during a ski accident at Deer Valley Ski Resort in Utah in 2016 which left him with a concussion and four broken ribs. The actress then countersued him for $1 and attorney fees.

In Utah, the law states that the downhill skier has the right of way. However, Paltrow and Sanderson both claimed that they were skiing downhill above the other.

In an interview with ABC News, Imrie claimed that she found Paltrow’s story more persuading. “There was in the back of my mind that this woman is an actress – I did take that into account,” she said. “But I didn’t feel that she had a reason to lie under oath. She’s always in the spotlight so she always has to be honest.”

The jury ultimately believed Paltrow when Dr. Irving Scher, who testified on Paltrow’s behalf, used a scientific approach and correctly explained how Sanderson crashed into the actress.

“He’s a snow sports expert in many different ways,” Imrie said. “I think the fact that Dr. Scher could speak to the settings and he specifically studied snow science, that he had a stronger opinion.”

Sanderson’s argument became weaker as multiple social media posts of the optometrist were shown in court after the accident, showing the doctor in good health as he traveled around the world in new photos.

“I think I wrote down something like, ‘I need to make more money so I can travel this way,’” Imrie said. “I wouldn’t have thought he was capable of those things based on the picture that he was painting.”

Imrie continued: “I think it’s important that the public doesn’t just think this was a win because Gwyneth is a celebrity. This is based on the evidence and this is based on the law. I do work in medicine and you have to look at everyone the same. That should apply in the courtroom as well.”

Paltrow was granted $1 after her victorious win in court.

In other news, Sanderson has apologised to Gwyneth Paltrow after he previously described her as being like “King Kong” when they collided on the ski slopes.

‘Game of Thrones’ star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau still hasn’t watched ‘House of the Dragon’

“Oh, this seems too familiar”

Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has revealed that he has yet to watch the prequel series House Of The Dragon.

The spin-off series was the first approved prequel from the Thrones-related projects in the works at HBO and released its first season last year.

House Of The Dragon, adapted from author George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, is set 200 years before the events in Game Of Thrones. The show follows the Targaryen civil war with King Viserys I Targaryen’s children battling for control of the Iron Throne.

In a recent interview with the Entertainment Weekly, Coster-Waldu – who portrayed Jamie Lannister on all eight seasons of Games of Thrones – said that he has not been able to get past House Of The Dragon‘s opening credits when attempting to watch the series.

“I sat down one day and I watched the title sequence and then I was confused because the music of course is the same, the theme music, and then the title sequence was very similar,” he said. “Oh, this seems too familiar.”

However, Coster-Waldu did admit that he’s he’s happy with the House of the Dragons’ success so far.

“I’m just gonna give them a couple of years to a couple of seasons and then I’ll binge-watch the whole thing,” he continued. “But I’m so happy that it’s a success and that people love the show. And I will watch it eventually.”

In a four-star review of the show NME wrote: “What is reassuring is that House Of The Dragon feels as though it is walking on solid ground: the bubbling rivalries, the jostling for power, the eruptions of violence; six episodes in, it is all coming together to create a rich stew.”

HBO renewed House of the Dragon for season two shortly after the success of the first episode, which racked up 20million viewers in the US.

Waldau isn’t the only Game of Thrones alumni who has yet to tune into the spin-off series. Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen, previously said that while she enjoyed the fact that the show accumulated much success, she hasn’t had the desire to watch the drama series.

Back in December, Game Of Thrones author Martin said that a number of future spin-offs of the show have been “shelved” by HBO.

In a blog post posted on his website, Martin said that structural changes at streaming service HBO Max have impacted the development of a number of planned spin-offs, and while a number are “shelved,” they are “not dead” in the author’s opinion.

Cypress Hill to finally make ‘The Simpsons’ orchestra joke “a reality”

“Do you know ‘Insane in the Brain’?”

The post Cypress Hill to finally make ‘The Simpsons’ orchestra joke “a reality”  appeared first on NME.

Cypress Hill have announced that they’ll finally be making their orchestra mash-up joke from The Simpsons “a reality” after their popular cameo

In the 1996 Simpsons episode Homerpalooza, Homer took his family on a road trip to an alternative rock festival Hullabalooza in a bid to prove to his children, Bart and Lisa, that he was still the cool and in touch with popular culture. However, he soon embarrassed them when he became a sideshow who had cannonballs aimed at his stomach – before proving a hit with bands and festival-goers.

Among the likes of Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth, Cypress Hill made a cameo in the show, during which they joked about performing with a classical orchestra.

At one point, Homer and his family headed backstage when a roadie was looking to find out which of the acts on the bill had booked the London Symphony Orchestra. When no one replied, the man accused the rap group of ordering the orchestra while high, “Cypress Hill, I’m looking in your direction.”

“I think we did,” Cypress Hill replied. “Do you know ‘Insane in the Brain’?”

The rappers and the orchestra then collaborated for a mash-up of the song, to which Marge replied, “Now this, I like.”

After the episode aired 27 years ago, it became an ongoing joke outside the show that the group and orchestra could eventually team up to perform the classical version. Now, the band have announced that they “plan to make the gig with the London Symphony a reality” to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their 1993 second album ‘Black Sunday’.

On Instagram, Cypress Hill replied to a reel of their guest star appearance on The Simpsons, revealing: “July in Denver with the Colorado symphony we are playing ‘Black Sunday’ in its entirety to celebrate its 30 [year] anniversary. After that we plan to make the gig with the London Symphony a reality. Salut to ‘The Simpsons’ for birthing the idea.”

The Simpsons has often been credited with predicting the future – including episodes that foresaw Donald Trump announcing his presidency, Disney buying 20th Century Fox, Siegfried and Roy being attacked by a tiger, Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl performance, and most recently the outrage surrounding Michelangelo’s statue of David going on tour.

Last year, the iconic rappers released the documentary Cypress Hill: Insane In The Brain, which explored the group’s long-lasting influence on hip-hop and culture.

Meanwhile, fans of The Simpsons recently called out a plot inconsistency following the return of character Jacques in the show’s 34th season – who previously tried to start an affair with Marge back in season one episode Life On The Fast Lane.

In the new episode, Homer had no knowledge of Marge and Jacques’ history. This, however, goes against events in season six episode Another Simpsons Clip Show, where Homer was informed of the almost-affair when Marge retold the incident.

Harry Styles turned down Prince Eric role in ‘The Little Mermaid’ to seek “darker” films

“He was really looking to do something not in the musical genre”

The director of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, has revealed that Harry Styles turned down a role in the live-action film due to the singer seeking more “darker” movies.

The ‘As It Was’ singer was initially approached to be cast as Prince Eric in the new remake of children’s classic starring singer Halle Bailey. However, the Grammy Award winner declined the position.

The director of The Little Mermaid, Rob Marshall, told Entertainment Weekly that he “met with” Styles and “he was lovely”.

“What a wonderful guy,” said Marshall. “But at the end of the day, he really felt like he wanted to go off and do the movies that he ended up doing, which were sort of darker.”

Styles’ recent roles include the queer romance film My Police Manand the psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling last year.

“For a lot of young musical people like Harry, you’re trying to carve your way and you don’t want to be seen as a singer, necessarily,” Marshall added.

“That’s why he was really looking to do something not in the musical genre, to really stretch himself. It was really a fun idea to play with, but in the end, I always think things happen for a reason. I’m so happy to have two young, new people in the film.”

In addition to Bailey, The Little Mermaid stars Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Awkwafina as Scuttle, and David Diggs as Sebastian.

Styles was also considered to play Elvis Presley for Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-nominated epic Elvis. However, Luhrmann revealed that while Styles was in the running for the part, he was hesitant to cast an international icon.

Meanwhile, Styles recently told Rolling Stone that he is not seeking any movie roles at moment as he continues his international tour for 2022 album ‘Harry’s House‘.

“I don’t imagine I’d do a movie for a while,” he said. “A large part of acting is the doing nothing, waiting thing. Which if that’s the worst part, then it’s a pretty good job. But I don’t find that section of it to be that fulfilling. I like doing it in the moment, but I don’t think I’ll do it a lot.”

In September, Disney released the official trailer for The Little Mermaid at their D23 expo that took place in California.

According to reports from the D23 Expo, the soundtrack for The Little Mermaid will also feature four new songs, which were worked on by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken.

The Little Mermaid is set for release in cinemas on May 26.

Taraji P Henson has joined Abbott Elementary season two as a prominent guest star.

The Hidden Figures actress will appear in an upcoming episode of the hit US sitcom as schoolteacher Janine’s (Quinta Brunson) estranged mother, Vanetta.

The news was announced at a PaleyFest panel event in Los Angeles, California on Saturday (April 1), where Henson appeared via pre-recorded video message alongside permanent cast members Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tyler James Williams, Lisa Anna Walter, and William Stanford Davis, who were there in person.

“Now I can’t share too many details with you so you’ll have to tune in to ABC, April 12,” Henson said, “but I can guarantee you that it is going to be a riot… I have been a fan of Abbott Elementary since day one. I’m so proud of Quinta, and I was excited to join her and the amazing cast.”

Following the announcement, Abbott Elementary’s official Twitter account confirmed the news with an image of Henson and Brunson on set together. The caption read: “About that episode titled “mom” you saw earlier…”

Henson’s cameo comes after Janine’s sister Ayesha (played by The Bear star Ayo Edebiri in a recurring role) first appeared on the show last month. We first met Ayesha during an awkward FaceTime call with her sister in the episode ‘Valentine’s Day’.

Janine’s distant relationship with her mother and sister had been a developing storyline throughout this series. However, the clumsy schoolteacher had improved her relationship with Ayesha and admitted that she must do the same with their mother.

“I think relationships with mothers are very defining, especially for someone who is then taking care of children — like Janine, who’s caring for kids,” Brunson told Reuters in September 2022. “It connects a lot to her relationships in the school. I know a lot of women in my life who have had very complicated relationships with their moms unfortunately.”

The critically acclaimed series won three Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series. Brunson was also the third Black person and second Black woman to win Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series alongside Larry Willmore (The Bernie Mac Show) and Lena Waithe (Master of None).

Henson earned three Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe Award, a Critics Choice Award, and three BET nominations for playing Cookie Lyon in the music industry drama Empire. The Hidden Figures actress will be in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical take on Steven Spielberg’s 1985 drama The Colour Purple.

Meanwhile, Abbott Elementary was recently renewed for a third season. However, the release date has yet to be confirmed.

Here’s when Ridley Scott’s ‘Napoleon’ biopic is coming out

The director’s latest film hits cinemas and Apple TV+ this November

The post Here’s when Ridley Scott’s ‘Napoleon’ biopic is coming out appeared first on NME.

NME

Ridley Scott’s Napoleon film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the French military leader and emperor, has officially received a release date.

The new film will be released in UK cinemas on November 22, before hitting streaming service Apple TV+ at a later date.

The historical drama will follow the life of Napoleon, who led his country to a revolution in 1789. According to the official synopsis, the film “is an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine.”

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Scott from a screenplay by David Scarpa, who has also written the upcoming sequel to Scott’s 2000 epic Gladiator, the movie is Scott’s first in two years after acclaimed crime drama House Of Gucci. Opposite Phoenix, Vanessa Kirby will star as Empress Josephine, with a cast rounded out by Ben Miles, Tahar Rah, Ludivine Sagnier and John Hollingworth.

Phoenix previously worked with Scott more than 20 years ago on the set of the classic 2000 film Gladiator. He played villainous emperor Commodus.

Napoleon began production in February 2022, and wrapped filming within the same year.

Scott revealed to Empire that casting Phoenix as Napoleon resulted in rewriting the script in the middle of production to make Phoenix feel more comfortable.

“Joaquin is about as far from conventional as you can get,” Scott said. “Not deliberately, but out of intuition. That’s what makes him tick. If something bothers him, he’ll let you know. He made [Napoleon] special by constantly questioning.”

He continued: “With Napoleon, I think we dug in and found the character, or as close to what he may have been.

“With Joaquin, we can rewrite the goddamn film because he’s uncomfortable. And that kind of happened with Napoleon,” he said. “We unpicked the film to help him focus on who Bonaparte was. I had to respect that, because what was being said was incredibly constructive. It made it all grow bigger and better.”

In other news, Phoenix was recently spotted in new photos on the set of Joker 2 with Lady Gaga. They can be seen filming on the well-known steps in New York neighbourhood the Bronx. The steps featured in a now iconic scene from original movie Joker, as well as numerous films and TV series from down the years.

Joker: Folie à Deux is set to be released on October 4, 2024 in cinemas.

Francis Ford Coppola wraps production on ‘Megalopolis’ after over 40 years

The film stars Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Aubrey Plaza, Laurence Fishburne, Shia LaBeouf, Talia Shire, and Jason Schwartzman

Director Francis Ford Coppola wrapped production on his controversial project Megalopolis – with the movie now over 40 years in the making.

Coppola’s passion project first came about in 1980 – however, the director didn’t have the funds at the time to make the movie a reality, eventually putting his film on the shelf. The Godfather director finally got the movie off the ground nearly four decades later and has now been completed.

The announcement was made on the film’s Instagram page last week, captioned: “That’s a wrap #MegalopolisFilm”.

According to reports, film studios were initially unwilling to support Coppola’s passion project, which led him to fund it alone. The director sold his assets, including his wineries in the Northern California area, to afford the $100million (£81,004,500.00) movie.

While in production for the film, rumours circulated that the atmosphere on set was “chaotic” after the art department resigned. However, Adam Driver, who is starring in the movie, debunked those claims – telling Indiewire that “the environment that’s being created by Francis is one of focus and inspiration”.

Coppola, who wrote and directed the movie, assembled a star-studded cast including Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Aubrey Plaza, Laurence Fishburne, Shia LaBeouf, Talia Shire, and Jason Schwartzman.

The film follows a successful architect who decided to rebuild New York City into a utopian society after a natural disaster that ruined the urban city’s infrastructure.

Megapolis is set to be released some time in 2024.

In other news, Coppolla recently spoke out about modern blockbuster movies stating that there all based on the same “prototype.”

“There used to be studio films,” he said an interview with GQ. “Now there are Marvel pictures. And what is a Marvel picture? A Marvel picture is one prototype movie that is made over and over and over again to look different.”

Michelle Rodriguez on why she won’t let James Cameron reprise her role in ‘Avatar’ sequel

“You can’t do that – I died as a martyr”

Michelle Rodriguez has downplayed the chances of reprising her tole in the upcoming Avatar film, claiming that it would be “so weird” following her character’s death.

Avatar: The Way Of The Water – the sequel to 2009’s first of the franchise series – was released last year and saw the return of Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) after his character was murdered in the first film.

However, Rodriguez revealed that filmmaker James Cameron suggested that the franchise should also make a return for her character, despite her death in the same movie.

“When I saw Jim recently he was like, ‘I was thinking, What if Michelle came back? A lot of the other characters came back [in The Way of Water]’,” she told Vanity Fair.

The actress immediately turned down his request, she revealed. “I was like, ‘You can’t do that – I died as a martyr,” she explained. “Jim, I came back in Resident Evil, I wasn’t supposed to. I came back in Machete, I wasn’t supposed to. I came back with Letty, I wasn’t supposed to. We can’t do a fourth, that would be overkill!'”

She added: “I don’t understand, it’s so weird. I guess they don’t know what to do with the girl who doesn’t have a boyfriend. ‘She doesn’t have a boyfriend. Should we keep her alive, or kill her?'”

Avatar The Way of Water became a box office success – earning $1billion at the box office in its first two weeks of release before overtaking Cameron’s blockbuster 1997 film Titanic to be crowned the third-highest-grossing movie ever.

In a four-star review of the movie, NME wrote that it’s “a ground-breaking, visually stunning film.”

Back in 2016, it was announced that four Avatar sequels would follow the original – with the titles later revealed as Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa.

Avatar producer Jon Landau recently confirmed that Vin Diesel will not appear in a future instalment of the franchise, despite the actor previously suggesting otherwise.

In 2021, Rodriguez requested a rewrite for the original Fast and Furious script, claiming it was sexist.

Rodriguez’ co-star Jordana Brewster told Entertainment Weekly that the actress said: ”’I’m not going to be a slut in front of millions of people, so you’re going to lose me if you don’t change this’.”

Meanwhile, Rodriguez also stars in the new Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves – which is out now.

Hollywood’s COVID vaccination mandate gets an expiration date

Their decision is in line with the US Department of Health and Human Services

The post Hollywood’s COVID vaccination mandate gets an expiration date appeared first on NME.

NME

Officials have announced that Hollywood’s COVID policy will expire for the film and TV industry next month – including the mandate that required all cast and crew to be vaccinated to receive employment.

The policy began in September 2020 per an agreement between the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers and Hollywood’s unions. The procedure allowed film and TV sets to start working again after an industry-wide lockdown at the beginning of the pandemic.

The policy was supposed to end on April 30, 2021. Still, it was prolonged multiple times, including that same year in June, when set producers were asked, “to implement mandatory vaccination policies for casts and crew in Zone A on a production-by-production basis”. Zone A is where unmasked actors work in a restrictive area on set.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television producers released a statement on Friday (March 31), announcing that its decision aligns with the US Department of Health and Human Services, which also recently announced its new policy.

“The date coincides with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ end to the federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency declaration on May 11,” they said.

Over the last few months, the mask mandate has become controversial. In February, Woody Harrelson mocked the policy and called it “absurd” in an interview with the New York Times.

“I don’t think that anybody should have the right to demand that you’re forced to do the testing, forced to wear the mask and forced to get vaccinated three years on,” he said. “I’m just like, let’s be done with this nonsense.”

Tim Robbins backed up his statement by saying: “Woody is right. Time to end this charade.”

SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher also spoke against the vaccine mandate. In an interview with Variety, Drescher said: “I think that when it comes to what we do with our bodies, that should be a personal choice.”

Any production with a vaccination mandate in effect as of May 11 will continue to implement the procedure throughout the duration of filming.

Employees will still get five COVID sick days if they become ill while working on a production. However, COVID testing stations will continue to be implemented, but only for actors involved in “intimate scenes,” according to a press release from the entertainment union.

In other news, Tilda Swinton also disagreed with wearing a mask while on set for her new film. The actor claimed that she is “full of antibodies and very healthy.”

The fantasy film Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves reunited the Freaks and Geeks cast for the movie’s promotional ad.

The ad shows co-director John Francis Daley with his former co-stars Samm Levine and Martin Starr – who often played the board game Dungeons and Dragons in the 1999 hit series.

The new promotional clip for the film takes place 23 years later and shows the trio having lost track of time fighting magical creatures, which leads Levine to wonder “if his parents are still alive.”

Elsewhere in the commercial, Levine asked if the game should be made into a movie – leading all three to break out laughing. “That would never work,” Levine replied, before Daley called it “the stupidest idea in the world:.

“I hope that never happens,” Levine added, with Daley aggreeing: “It won’t.”

Daley incorporated the board game with the promotion of the film, having spoken of first falling in love with the franchise after playing it as a child.

The ad was released on Dungeons & Dragons Movie Twitter account captioned: “Time flies when you play D&D”

Fans of Freaks & Geeks claimed that the commercial influenced them to purchase a ticket for the movie.

One Twitter user commented: “I was gonna see this movie already. But now I’m gonna watch it EVEN harder”

Another agreed: “This has solidified my ticket purchase to this movie. Good job by all.”

“Not only am I going to see the #DnDMovie AGAIN, I now want to go watch #FreaksandGeeks AGAIN,” another fan added.

Although the series only lasted one season due to low ratings, the show went on to become a cult classic and gain a loyal fan base throughout the years.

Based on the iconic 1974 board game of the same name, the live-action fantasy follows a charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers who partake in an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic. However, the plan goes wrong when they run into the wrong people.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves is produced by Jeremy Latcham and stars Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, and Daisy Head.

NME wrote in a four-star review that: “It’s a little formulaic in places, but on the flip side, it pulls some really weird moments out of its sack. Like the scene with Holga’s ex-lover – a bizarre-but-brilliant A-list cameo. In the Hollywood fairground, this ride will leave you dizzy and delighted.”
