Depeche Mode

Aussie Depeche Mode fans are an incredibly patient bunch. The last time the British synth-pop titans toured the country was in 1994, meaning nearly three decades have passed since they last paid us a visit. But good things come to those who wait, and it seems there is a glimmer of hope for those hoping to catch the band Down Under.

In March 2023, Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan told an Italian blog that the band were eyeing “as-yet-unannounced dates in Asia and Australia” as part of a touring run that would lead into 2024. The band have toured the world in support of their latest album, ‘Memento Mori’, and a trip to Australia to cap off the jaunt seems more likely than ever.

Shows are currently booked for April 12, 13, 17, 19, 20, 24, 26 and 27, and will take place at Park MGM’s Dolby Live venue. Find more information and ticketing details here.

‘The Emancipation of Mimi’, Carey’s 10th studio album, arrived in April 2005, following the release of singles ‘It’s Like That’ and ‘We Belong Together’.

The album received both commercial and critical acclaim upon its release. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling more than 400,000 copies in its first week, and went on to become the country’s best-selling album in 2005.

At the 2006 Grammys, ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’ won the award for Best Contemporary R&B Album, with ‘We Belong Together’ also winning in the Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance categories.

Since ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’ arrived, Carey has released five more studio albums, including 2008 follow-up ‘E=MC²’ and her second Christmas album, 2010’s ‘Merry Christmas II You’. Carey’s most recent album, ‘Caution’, arrived in 2018.

Carey has performed a number of Vegas residencies in recent years. Between 2015 and 2017, Carey played 50 concerts at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace as part of a residency dubbed ‘#1 To Infinity’.

Between 2018 and 2020, she came back to the venue for a residency series called ‘The Butterly Returns’. In addition to those residencies, Carey played a string of Christmas-themed shows at Caesars Palace in December 2017 and 2019.

Snoop Dogg and Master P claim Walmart hid their cereal from shelves in new lawsuit

Snoop and Master P’s lawyers claim the supermarket giant hid boxes of their Snoop Cereal in stockrooms, preventing customers from finding them on shelves

NME

Snoop Dogg and Master P have filed a lawsuit against Walmart and Post Consumer Brands, alleging that the companies sabotaged their cereal brand, Snoop Cereal.

The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday (February 6) on behalf of the rappers’ company Broadus Foods. It claims that after entering into a partnership deal with Post to get their product onto supermarket shelves, the company “ensured that Snoop Cereal would not be available to consumers”, breaching a contract between the companies.

The suit alleges that Walmart and Post conspired to limit Snoop Cereal’s visibility in supermarkets, with the rappers claiming that the move was sparked by their refusal to sell their Broadus Foods company in its entirety to Post.

They claim that Post nevertheless entered a partnership in which they would “treat Snoop Cereal as one of its own brands” and distribute it alongside its other popular products at retailers like Walmart.

The rappers’ lawyer, Ben Crump, said Post had “no intention of treating Snoop Cereal equally as its own brands”, and only intended to give the appearance they were sticking to the terms of the partnership.

Snoop Cereal started being stocked in Walmart stores in July 2023, but the rappers claim that, anecdotally, a few months later customers began complaining that they weren’t able to find the cereal on shelves.

Snoop and Master P’s lawyers claim that while the cereal initially sold well at Walmart stores, the retailer’s system later showed it was falsely out of stock.

“Upon further investigation by store employees, each of these stores had several boxes of Snoop Cereal in their stockrooms that were coded to not be put out on the store shelves,” they wrote.

“Unlike the other Post branded boxes of cereal around them, these Snoop Cereal boxes had been in the stockrooms for months without ever being made available to customers.”

In a statement provided to TMZ, a representative for Post said they were “excited to partner with Broadus Foods” and “made substantial investments in the business”. They said the company was “disappointed” when “consumer demand did not meet expectations”.

“Walmart values our relationships with our suppliers, and we have a strong history of supporting entrepreneurs,” Walmart said in their own statement.

“Many factors affect the sales of any given product, including consumer demand, seasonality, and price to name a few. We will respond as appropriate with the Court once we are served with the complaint.”

Snoop and Master P launched the cereal in August 2022. They originally planned to sell it under the name Snoop Loopz, but were blocked from doing so by an unnamed brand – presumably Kellogg’s, who own the trademark to Froot Loops – and rebranded to Snoop Cereal shortly afterwards.

The cereal’s launch also drew the attention of Jack White, who publicly congratulated Snoop on the product in a post on Instagram, but said he had “a couple of important questions”.

“In the press release from Broadus Foods, the photo of the cereal box contains the words ‘MORE MARSHMALLOWS’. More than what? If this is in fact a brand new cereal, it can’t be more marshmallows than ‘before,'” White wrote.

“Is it a statement that this cereal has more marshmallows than say… a bag of sand, or a typical Caesar salad? Or, is it a DEMAND from Snoop Dogg himself that we just have more marshmallows in this world in general? That last theory is my hope.”

Incubus have announced a US arena tour for August and September, during which they will perform their fourth studio album, 2001’s ‘Morning View’, in full.

The band will be joined by Coheed and Cambria for the run, which kicks off in Detroit, Michigan on August 23 and wraps up in San Francisco, California on September 12.

In addition to ‘Morning View’, Incubus’ setlist will include “hits” from throughout their catalogue.

See full dates and details below. Tickets for the tour will go on sale this Friday (February 9) at 10am local time – find them here.

Incubus 2024 ‘Morning View’ tour dates with Coheed & Cambria are:

AUGUST

24 – Rosemont, IL – Allstate Arena
27 – Philadelphia, PA – Wells Fargo Center
29 – New York City, NY – Madison Square Garden
31 – Boston, MA – TD Garden

SEPTEMBER
3 – Tampa, FL – Amalie Arena

6 – Dallas, TX – Toyota Music Factory

The tour’s announcement comes alongside a new release date for ‘Morning View XXIII’ – a full re-recording of the album that was announced last year and is now slated for release in May.

Last year, Incubus celebrated ‘Morning View’ by performing the album in full during an anniversary concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, which featured a surprise appearance from Lizzo. Earlier, in 2021, the band returned to the Malibu beach house where it was written and recorded for a livestream concert where they performed it in its entirety.

“Roughly 23 years ago we rented a house at the sea to do an art experiment,” Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd said in statement.

“The novel and expansive environment combined with a healthy dose of momentum helped us find that ever sought after flow state, and the songs that became known as Morning View have since become indelible and deeply important parts of our lives,” Boyd said.

“This album helped propel our little art experiment called Incubus into a way of life and here we are today, some 23 years later, about to introduce a new/next phase of its existence.”

Incubus’ most recent studio album was ‘8’ back in 2017. Coheed and Cambria last released an album in 2022: ‘Vaxis – Act II: A Window of the Waking Mind’.

Rick Froberg of Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes has died

Froberg’s death was confirmed by his longtime bandmate, John Reis. He was 55 years old

The post Rick Froberg of Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes has died appeared first on NME.

NME

American singer and guitarist Rick Froberg, a founding member of influential post-hardcore bands Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes, has died at the age of 55.

Froberg’s passing was confirmed by his longtime bandmate John Reis on Instagram earlier today (July 2). “Rick passed away suddenly last night from natural causes,” Reis wrote.

“His art made life better. The only thing he loved more than art and rock n roll was his friends. He will forever be remembered for his creativity, vision and his ability to bring beauty into this world. I love you, Rick. I will miss you for the rest of my life.”

Born in Los Angeles, California in 1968, one of Froberg’s earliest musical projects was the San Diego-based band Pitchfork, which he formed with Reis in 1986. Following Pitchfork’s disbandment in 1990, the pair formed Drive Like Jehu alongside bassist Mike Kennedy and drummer Mark Trombino.

Their self-titled debut album was released the following year, with follow-up ‘Yank Crime’ arriving in 1994. Pairing the aggression of hardcore punk with unconventional structures and more intricate, progressive songwriting, the band played a major role in shaping emo. At the Drive-In‘s Cedric Bixler-Zavala has cited Drive Like Jehu’s work as a direct influence on his band.

Drive Like Jehu ceased activity in 1995. In 1999, Froberg and Reis reunited to form Hot Snakes with bassist Gar Wood and drummer Jason Kourkounis. The band released three albums – 2000 debut ‘Automatic Midnight’, 2002’s ‘Suicide Invoice’ and 2004’s ‘Audit in Progress’ before breaking up in 2005.

They reunited in 2011, releasing fourth album ‘Jericho Sirens’ in 2018. Last month, Froberg shared on Instagram that Hot Snakes were “working on a new record” and were “very near” to finishing it. Other bands Froberg recorded music and performed with included Obits and Last of the Juanitas.

Among those to have paid tribute to Froberg since news of his death emerged is bassist Brian Cook, formerly of Botch and These Arms are Snakes, and currently a member of Russian Circles and Sumac.

“I can’t understate Rick Froberg’s sonic influence and inspiration when it comes to Botch and These Arms Are Snakes,” Cook wrote on Twitter. “Thank you for the music and rest in peace, Rick.”

Watch Bob Dylan cover the Grateful Dead’s ‘Stella Blue’ in Barcelona

It comes after Dylan debuted covers of the Dead’s ‘Truckin” and ‘Brokedown Palace’ while touring Japan in April

The post Watch Bob Dylan cover the Grateful Dead’s ‘Stella Blue’ in Barcelona appeared first on NME.

NME

Bob Dylan has covered the Grateful Dead‘s ‘Stella Blue’ during a show in Spain earlier this week.

Dylan was performing at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona on Friday (June 23) when he played a rendition of the song, originally taken from the Dead’s 1973 album ‘Wake of the Flood’.

While the recent concert marked Dylan’s first time performing ‘Stella Blue’, it continues a recent streak of Grateful Dead covers the legendary singer-songwriter has played this year. Watch fan-shot footage of Dylan performing ‘Stella Blue’ below:

In April, while touring Japan in support of latest album ‘Rough and Rowdy Ways’, Dylan debuted two Grateful Dead covers at separate shows on the run – both songs taken from 1970 album ‘American Beauty’. He covered ‘Truckin” during a show in Tokyo on April 12, then played a rendition of ‘Brokedown Palace’ during a gig in Nagoya on April 18.

Before this year, Dylan had only covered four Grateful Dead songs live throughout his career: ‘Friend of the Devil’, ‘West L.A. Fadeaway’, ‘Alabama Getaway’ and ‘Black Muddy River’. Dylan toured with the Grateful Dead in 1987, resulting in the live album ‘Dylan & the Dead’.

Earlier this month, Dylan released new album ‘Shadow Kingdom’. The album featured the recordings that appeared in his Alm Har’el-directed 2021 concert film of the same name, which featured Dylan and a backing band “performing” along to pre-recorded tracks from across his back catalogue.

Dylan’s most recent studio album, ‘Rough and Rowdy Ways’, arrived in 2020. In a five-star review, NME called the record “arguably [Dylan’s] grandest poetic statement yet, a sweeping panorama of culture, history and philosophy”.

Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon releases ‘Hazelton’, the song that became ‘Holocene’

The song was originally recorded by Vernon in the mid-2000s, just prior to the dissolution of previous band DeYarmond Edison

The post Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon releases ‘Hazelton’, the song that became ‘Holocene’ appeared first on NME.

NME

Bon Iver bandleader Justin Vernon has shared ‘Hazelton’, a solo song he recorded between 2005 and 2006 that later served as a starting point for ‘Holocene’, a track from Bon Iver’s self-titled 2011 album.

‘Hazelton’ and another song from that era, ‘Liner’, were originally released by Vernon on a small run of handmade CD-Rs in the mid-2000s, while he was still in his previous band, DeYarmond Edison.

The two tracks were released on streaming platforms earlier this week. Both will appear on a comprehensive DeYarmond Edison box set titled ‘Epoch’ which is set to arrive later this year. Listen below:

Vernon’s solo recordings arrived shortly before DeYarmond Edison broke up in 2006. Vernon soon recorded what would go on to become Bon Iver’s debut album, releasing ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ in July 2007. Vernon’s former bandmates Brad Cook, Phil Cook and Joe Westerlund went on to form the band Megafaun following DeYarmond Edison’s dissolution.

‘Epoch’ is set to arrive physically on August 18, and September 22 digitally. The box set will feature five LPs and four CDs, including DeYarmond Edison’s two albums (2004’s ‘DeYarmond Edison’ and 2005’s ‘Silent Signs’), live recordings and rare material by Vernon and Megafaun.

It will also include a 120-page book exploring DeYarmond Edison’s history and the origins of Bon Iver and Megafaun, written by music journalist and friend of the band Grayson Haver Currin. Pre-orders are available here. In addition to ‘Hazelton’ and ‘Liner’, other songs from the compilation that have been released so far include DeYarmond Edison’s ‘As Long as I Can Go’ and Phil Cook and Justin Vernon’s ‘Feel the Light’.

Since their disbandment, DeYarmond Edison have sporadically reunited. They played a one-off show as part of SXSW in 2011. In 2016, they united with Bruce Hornsby to contribute a cover of The Grateful Dead‘s ‘Black Muddy River’ to the benefit compilation ‘Day of the Dead’.

Bon Iver released their latest album ‘I, I’ in 2019. In a five-star review, NME said the band’s fourth album saw Vernon draw on the sounds of the band’s three previous records. “Over 12 years the music Justin Vernon has created as Bon Iver has constantly changed, but that doesn’t mean the old sounds have been undone,” it read. “They’ve been repurposed and reused, evolving into something different – but always as compelling as the Bon Iver of yesteryear.”
