It comes after fans speculated about their recent on stage appearance at the festival

Lana Del Rey has spoken out about her friendship with Camila Cabello, and quashed rumours about why she brought the singer out during her Coachella set.

Speculation about the relationship between the two came into the spotlight once again following Del Rey’s recent headline set at the 2024 edition of Coachella. During her performance during the second weekend of the California festival last month, the ‘Candy Necklace’ singer surprised fans by bringing out Cabello as a surprise guest.

The moment saw them come together to perform a rendition of the latter’s recent single ‘I LUV IT’, and caught some fans off guard as it was widely thought that it would be Taylor Swift who would be joining Del Rey as a guest on the night.

Some viewers also questioned why the headliner chose to bring out Cabello, particularly because the track they duetted is unlike anything in Lana Del Rey’s discography and not the obvious choice when it comes to a collaboration.

For some devoted fans, a consensus emerged that the appearance at Coachella may have been somewhat of a peace offering, following the ‘Video Games’ singer seemingly calling out the pop star in a past post.

The alleged tension between the two arose back in 2020, when Lana Del Rey shared a now-infamous post on Instagram titled ‘Question for the culture’. In the update, the singer complained about how so many artists had reached the Number One spot on the charts “with songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, fucking, cheating, etc”, however, she had faced backlash for “glamorising abuse” and been “crucified” because of it.

In the post, Cabello was one of the artists Del Rey mentioned in relation to topping the charts.

As highlighted by Stereogum, the ‘Summertime Sadness’ singer had already had to clarify that she did not intend to criticise the singer-songwriter when she left the cryptic comment “What the hell?’ under one of the latter’s Instagram posts. “I meant what the hell in a good way,” she said at the time. “As in it’s so good.”

Anyway, following the recent collaboration at the Indio festival, the convoluted history between the two has been drawn into the spotlight once again, with a fan posting that 2020 rant again online, highlighting Cabello’s name and writing a caption “definition of forgive and forget!”.

That being said, Del Rey seems to have put the rumours to rest once and for all – replying to the fan’s post and clarifying that she didn’t intend to name-check the singer in the first place.

“Um it’s not a forgive and forget vibe because, other than one person I didn’t know, most of these people were my friends that’s why I felt safe listing them,” she wrote.

“They knew I was saying I wanted to be able to tell my story which was worse than most peoples, like they could,” she added, before going on to claim that she “was sequestered to wearing turtlenecks for 11 years” after releasing her hit song ‘Video Games’.

“But because everyone critically hated ‘video games’ just ‘cause I was talking about watching my boyfriend playing video games I was sequestered to wearing turtlenecks for 11 years. vibe what you will,” she wrote. “By the way, these were also the only people who had number one hits in the last six months that year that was the whole point, to name anyone else would’ve been irrelevant.”

Following the backlash from Del Rey, the fan who posted the 2020 post immediately shared an apology, and explained why they pulled the rant back into the limelight. “I only meant good things and was simply happy that camila and lana were still friends,” they wrote.

In other news around the singer’s Coachella set, it was reported last month that the festival was facing a fine of around $28,000 (£22,585), due to the singer running over the scheduled time frame.

The time issues with the set last month coincided with a similar problem the ‘Blue Jeans’ singer faced last June, when she arrived on stage late for her performance at Glastonbury, and was subsequently cut off due to hitting the curfew.

UK students begin Gaza protests after “horrifying” arrests at US universities

Demonstrations are being held in Sheffield, Leeds, Newcastle, Bristol and more

University students across the UK have embarked on a fresh wave of demonstrations, following the “horrifying” arrests of those protesting in support of Gaza in the US.

Various protests have already been held across the UK, with students across the country walking out of university in a show of solidarity with Palestine. There have also been calls for their universities to sever ties with firms that supply arms to Israel and withdraw links to universities in Israel.

Over the recent months, it has been the demonstrations in the UK capital that have gathered the most widespread support and media attention, however, the protests in other cities are set to attract more support following the violent scenes from US campuses including Columbia University.

The incidents across America have taken place over recent days, where those protesting in support of Gaza have been faced with aggression and many have been arrested by authorities.

The Hamilton Hall academic building was occupied by students in a bid to pressure Columbia University to divest from Israel. The Gaza Solidarity protest encampment that had been set up on Columbia’s main lawn for nearly two weeks, before it was raided by the NYPD and dismantled on Tuesday night (April 30). Many students were arrested.

As highlighted by The Guardian, a lecturer at Columbia Law School called Bassam Khawaja said that he was “horrified to see Columbia invite police onto our campus for the second time this month to arrest our students”.

Since the arrests, both faculty and non-resident students have been prevented from entering campus, and the scenes at the university have sparked a new sense of anger among UK students – with a shared sense of solidarity leading to more protests being planned.

Speaking with The Guardian, David Maguire – the vice-chancellor of the University of East Anglia (UEA) – explained how protests at UK universities have been generally peaceful, but could easily escalate into scenes similar to those in the US.

Among those planning demonstrations are students, staff and alumni from the universities of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam, who form a group called the Sheffield Campus Coalition for Palestine, and have already begun an encampment in solidarity with the people in Gaza.

An encampment is also being held at the University of Warwick, which has been going on since last week, as well as one in Newcastle, which is said to include over 40 students.

For the latter, organisers stated that students were left outraged after the university reportedly signed a partnership with Leonardo SpA – a defence and security company which they claim is responsible for the laser-targeting system used in the Israel Defense Forces’ F-35 fighter jets.

Elsewhere, there was a May Day student walkout in Leeds in solidarity with Palestine, students in Bristol established an encampment in Royal Fort Gardens, and the University of York revealed that it “no longer holds investments in companies that primarily make or sell weapons and defence-related products or services”.

The statement from the University of York came following prolonged pressure and demonstrations from staff, students and alumni since the beginning of the war in Gaza.

As well as demonstrations across London, it is students in Manchester that have also been making waves in support for Palestinians, as reports have emerged that 50 students have set up camp in a push to get the university to terminate its partnership with BAE Systems and other arms companies. The movement in Manchester also aims to make the university sever its ties with Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, as well as stop all “unethical research”.

Speaking with the outlet, a spokesperson for Universities UK – which represents the voice of over  140 institutions – stated: “Universities are monitoring the latest news on campus protests in the US and Canada. As with any high-profile issue, universities work hard to strike the right balance between ensuring the safety of all students and staff, including preventing harassment, and supporting lawful free speech on campus. We continue to meet regularly to discuss the latest position with university leaders.”

Solidarity with Palestine has been seen in the run-up to the 2024 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest too, with countless artists signing petitions to have Israel removed from the competition, and pressure being put on UK representative Olly Alexander to boycott the event.

Last year, Alexander was one of many who signed a pro-Palestine letter, calling Israel an “apartheid state” and accusing it of genocide,, however, he recently confirmed that he will still be taking part in the event as a boycott “wouldn’t bring us any closer to our shared goal”.

The 2024 edition will be hosted in Malmö, Sweden – the hometown of last year’s winner Loreen – on Saturday, May 11. At time of writing, Israel is set to take part as planned, but revealed earlier this month that it had changed the lyrics to their song.

Their entry, ‘October Rain’ by Eden Golan, appeared to contain references to the victims of Hamas’ October 7 attacks. Initially, Israel threatened to withdraw from the competition if any changes were to be made to the lyrics. However, a call from Israeli President Isaac Herzog for “necessary adjustments”  to ensure Israel’s participation prompted their public broadcaster KAN to agree to amend the song.

Manchester AO arena reportedly set to take some gigs from troubled Co-Op Live

The 23,500-capacity venue has so far postponed gigs from Peter Kay, The Black Keys, Olivia Rodrigo and others

The post Manchester AO arena reportedly set to take some gigs from troubled Co-Op Live appeared first on NME.

NME

Manchester’s AO arena is reportedly preparing to host some of the gigs scheduled for the new Co-Op Live Arena, which has faced an onslaught of issues in recent weeks.

Originally, the new arena, located opposite the Etihad Stadium, was supposed to open with performances from Peter Kay on April 23 and 24. However, following a test event with Rick Astley, the comedian’s gigs were moved to April 29 and 30 due to a failed power test. Other gigs that were set to take place at the venue were later pushed back.

Now, with uncertainty looming about when the venue will be able to overcome its “technical issues” and commence with the shows it has lined up, reports have emerged that rival Manchester venue, the AO Arena, is preparing to host some of the upcoming events initially planned for Co-Op Live.

The reports were shared by Manchester Evening News today (May 2), which reported that organisers at the AO Arena are lining up staff to host at least two shows.

These include the A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie gig, which was set to take place last night (May 1), but was cancelled after the doors opened following a “venue-related technical issue”. At time of writing, an official rescheduled date for the gig has not yet been shared, but Manchester Evening News speculates that it is being rearranged for the AO Arena this weekend (April 4).

The outlet also reported that the upcoming show by Keane may be rearranged, and looking to be held at the AO Arena instead of Co-Op Live. That being said, Keane’s show at Co-op Live (set for Sunday, May 5) is still currently listed as going ahead on the venue’s website, with no official announcement regarding the show made as of yet.

As per a source speaking to Manchester Evening News, the AO Arena are currently staffing “all aspects” of the venue for this weekend, including security officers, members of the box office team and food and beverage staff.

As aforementioned, the arena was supposed to open with performances from Peter Kay on April 23 and 24, but these were the first to be pushed back due to issues.

Shortly afterwards, a gig from The Black Keys (scheduled for April 27) had to be moved to May 15, and the Peter Kay shows were moved for the second time. The comic’s shows are now expected to be held on May 23 and 24. Following the second postponement, Kay shared a statement with fans, explaining that he was left “disappointed” by the news.

Initially, organisers ensured that all other shows scheduled would be going ahead as planned, however, they then told concertgoers who were already in the venue to see A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie to leave following a “venue-related technical issue”.

Later that evening, they cancelled Olivia Rodrigo’s show, once again citing the ongoing technical issues at the arena. Following the news, the pop star shared a statement with fans, saying that she was “so disappointed” by the news. A rescheduled date for both A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Rodrigo have yet to be announced.

Following the slew of issues facing the arena, music lovers have come forward to express their frustration at the postponements, and branded the venue as “Manchester’s own Fyre Festival”.

“We travelled like two hours… it’s just poor, if you’re gonna cancel it, cancel beforehand, so we don’t spend money on getting here,” one fan told NME. “There’s thousands of people stood outside and you cancel it half an hour after the doors were meant to be open?” added her friend. “It’s stupid.”

Another said she was left abandoned after her mother had dropped her off and drove back home, the original plan being for someone else to pick her up after 11. “It’s a two-hour drive,” she explained. “There’s nowhere for me to go.”

Initially, organisers insisted they were “not embarrassed” by the postponements, and instead focused on getting the venue up to scratch. However, just days later, news broke that Gary Roden, the boss of the new arena, had resigned amid the controversy.

Ahead of his resignation, Roden had come under fire for his comments about grassroots music venues, in which he argued that some smaller venues in the UK are “poorly run” and dismissed calls for a £1 ticket levy on all gigs arena-sized and above.

In response, Mark Davyd, CEO of the Music Venue Trust, told NME that he believed Roden’s comments were “disrespectful and disingenuous”, while also highlighting the irony of making such “ill-judged, unnecessary and misleading” remarks on the week that their own venue was forced to postpone their own launch, due to a number of logistical problems.

Since then, the Music Venue Trust (MVT) has said the new Co-Op Live Arena is “a great idea” but has urged bosses to “work in a way that secures the future of live music”.

“It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Co-Op Live Arena, but once the venue is open everyone will forget about that, and they can look forward to attracting thousands of music fans and offering amazing experiences to them,” read a statement shared today (May 2).

“We are having discussions with all major arenas and operators, and once they’re safely open we will continue those chats with the Co-Op Live too.”

Despite the ongoing issues at the Co-Op Live Arena, its owners are planning to build “the greatest arena in the world” in London. It comes after some historic grassroots venues have been forced to close down, with many still under threat of permanent closure.

Sprints share two new singles and announce huge UK, US and European tour dates

The tracks were made during the ‘Letter To Self’ recording sessions

The post Sprints share two new singles and announce huge UK, US and European tour dates appeared first on NME.

NME

Following the release of a critically acclaimed debut album, Sprints have shared two new singles and announced a huge run of tour dates. Find ticket details below.

The pair of tracks arrived under the banner of the ‘Black Box Sessions’, and are particularly angsty singles titled ‘Drones’ and ‘Help Me, I’m Spiralling’.

Both were recorded during the sessions for Spirits’ breakthrough debut album, ‘Letter To Self’, which arrived at the start of the year to critical acclaim, and has already been tipped by many as ready to become a contender for album of the year in 2024.

‘Drones’ is a reimagining of a past track and comes in at just shy of three-minutes long – bursting to life with high-energy riffs, distorted guitars and a brash vocal melody. “The graveyards fill, the dancefloors fill/ The bar stools fill, but everyone’s empty,” sings frontwoman Karla Chubb. “The desk chairs fill, the sickbeds fill/ The car parks fill, but I’m still empty.

For the most part, the Irish indie-punk four-piece follow a similar structure with ‘Help Me, I’m Spiralling’ – capturing an aggressive burst of energy from the opening line: “It’s another dim day, wasting away in this slow vicarious life/ I’m feeling photosensitive on this faux fence I sit on just watching it all pass by.”

The latter also comes alongside an orange-tinged trippy lyric video. Check both tracks out below.

“We’re happy to share the remnants of the chaos and catharsis that was the ‘Letter To Self’ recording process,” the band said of the new releases.

“A reimagination of an old favourite, and a new track too, the ‘Black Box Sessions’ include ‘Drones’ and ‘Help Me, I’m Spiralling’, two tracks that explore themes of uncertainty, anxiety and doubt. Embrace the madness and the noise.”

As well as sharing the two new tracks, Sprints have also revealed details of a huge run of tour dates, including shows in the US, Europe and the UK.

The dates follow on from the Irish quartet’s upcoming festival appearances – such as slots at Glastonbury, TRNSMT and Boardmasters – as well as their upcoming support shows for bands including Idles, Pixies and Gossip.

Headline dates kick off with the US leg, which starts on September 25 with a gig at The Sinclair venue in Boston, and continue throughout October with 18 performances lined up across the country. These include appearances in Nashville, Saltlake City, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Brooklyn and more.

The US run of tour dates kick off the month afterwards, with a show in Bristol lined up for November 12, followed by a stop at the Kentish Town Forum in London the following night. From there, Sprints will make stops across Europe, up until mid-December. Shows in Amsterdam, Cologne, Berlin and Brussels are all locked in, and the dates wrap up with a slot at the Trabendo venue in Paris on December 16.

Speaking about their recent run of live shows, frontwoman Karla Chubb spoke openly to NME about her recent ordeal of being sexually assaulted at one of the band’s gigs, and the organisation Girls Against shared advice for other victims and bystanders to stamp out groping at shows.

Last week, the singer explained that she’d had the “abhorrent” experience of being sexually assaulted for a second time at a gig: “Female performers should be able to engage with their audience, step off the stage or perform without fear of groping, unwanted touching, cat-calling and harassment.

“The fact that this is still an everyday occurrence for most women is beyond reprehensible.”

Speaking to NME, Chubb elaborated on the impact that the assault had on her, and made a push for more respectful behaviour towards artists on stage.

“It was just shock initially. I was talking to the guys in the green room and it hit me that it wasn’t normal. The next day, I woke up and I was pretty angry. The more I started to think about it, the more I started to realise I needed to say something because it’s just not OK that it happens to women at all  – let alone at the endemic level that it does across the music industry,” she explained.

“Then I started to notice bruising. Things like that make you feel vindicated at how serious it was.”

Recalling her advice to anyone who might witness sexual assault at a show, she added:  “I would make sure that you tell someone”.

“What’s been very comforting and vindicating was people coming to me to say, ‘I saw this happen to you’. It’s really important to be vocal about that, because there’s a lot of fear when coming forward that people are going to speculate, deny, twist their own narrative, or minimise what happened,” she said. “It’s important to make your voice heard and show solidarity.”

Stormzy and Adidas announce new #MerkyFC HQ centre for football, music and gaming

The two first joined forces in 2022 to address racial equity in the football industry and provide employment opportunities

The post Stormzy and Adidas announce new #MerkyFC HQ centre for football, music and gaming appeared first on NME.

NME

Stormzy has joined forces with Adidas to announce a new centre for music, football and gaming called #MerkyFC HQ.

Announced today (May 2), the centre is a newly built centre in Croydon, London, which has been developed to help give the community access to new facilities including a brand-new hub, housing football pitches, a state-of-the-art recording studio, a sports gaming hub and multipurpose rooms.

The development is built on the existing football site known as Selhurst Sports Arena – a space managed by Communities First Foundation that seeks to empower local communities through access to sports and employment support.

With the investment from Adidas, the venue will host year-round events and educational activities both on and off the pitch, and provide access to development opportunities for young people in the local area and beyond.

A music studio has also been added to the centre, intended to allow aspiring local artists to have more opportunity to go and record their own music. It will also serve as an accessible space for all other multimedia uses, such as Podcasts and gaming events.

Finally, a sports gaming hub is included thanks to a collaboration between #MerkyFC, Adidas and EA Sports, and allows young people to test their skills on the latest EA Sports titles, including EA Sports FC 24 and EA Sports F1 23.

The launch of #MerkyFC HQ marks the second pillar of the collaboration between Adidas and grime star Stormzy, and follows on from the initial #MerkyFC Careers programme.

First established in 2022, the project was built to address racial equity in the football industry and provide opportunities for UK Black Heritage Youth to access jobs in the football industry. In the time since its launch, the movement has seen over 60 individuals placed in roles across various brands.

“I’m gassed that we can finally open the doors to #Merky FC HQ. Working with Adidas, I’ve wanted to do this for a long, long time and now there’s a community space that everyone in the area will be able to use and benefit from,” Stormzy said of the new development. “When I was growing up there was nothing like this around for young people, so it means a lot that we now have a facility like this in Croydon. Proper homegrown!”

Steve Marks, Senior Director of Brand Communications for Adidas shared a similar sentiment, adding: “We’re proud to launch #MerkyFC HQ the next chapter in Adidas’ ongoing partnership with Stormzy. Supporting the development of spaces for the local community to connect, play and collaborate is a vital part of our ongoing drive to cultivate opportunities for young people.

“The centre is a space for everyone including those who enjoy taking part in football, but also for the discovery of other creative passions such as music and esports,” he added.

The news of #MerkyFC HQ arrives after Stormzy – along with other artists including Clairo – performed a benefit concert to raise funds for those in Palestine and Sudan.

Held in New Jersey, the event was titled ‘Artist For Aid’ and saw numerous musicians from all genres come together to help raise funds for the ongoing humanitarian crises in the countries.

Before then, the artist ushered in the next chapter of his #Merky FC partnership with Adidas, confirming that the scheme would “broaden its scope and impact by tripling the number of roles available”.

Watch Drake join Nicki Minaj on stage for the first live performance of ‘Needle’

It marks the first time they have performed together since they dropped the track in 2023

The post Watch Drake join Nicki Minaj on stage for the first live performance of ‘Needle’ appeared first on NME.

NME

Nicki Minaj surprised fans at a recent live show by bringing out Drake as a surprise guest and performing the live debut of ‘Needle’.

The moment took place on Tuesday (April 30), as the ‘Super Freaky Girl’ rapper took to the stage in Toronto as part of her ongoing world tour, celebrating the release of 2023’s ‘Pink Friday 2’.

While on stage at the Scotiabank Arena, she told the audience midway through the set that she would be bringing out a special guest. “Make some noise for the king of Toronto,” Nicki told the crowd, “Make some noise for this icon, this legend.”

It was there that the ‘Trust Issues’ rapper took to the stage, and performed the first-ever live performance of the two’s collaborative track ‘Needle’ together in front of his hometown audience.

The song was featured on Minaj’s recent album ‘Pink Friday 2’, and peaked at Number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 after its debut. It remained on the charts for four weeks and became one of the album’s biggest tracks.

As well as breaking out the song, Drake also went on to perform one song solo on the night – delivering a rendition of his 2023 track ‘Rich Baby Daddy’ while the headliner went backstage for a wardrobe change.

Before leaving the stage, the ‘God’s Plan’ rapper left the crowd with a parting message, which seemed to make a nod to his ongoing feud with Kendrick Lamar. “I love you. You know what time it is — you know what I have to do,” he said.

Check out more footage from the set below.

The surprise appearance at Minaj’s headline show arrived around the same time that the Canadian rapper replied to Kendrick Lamar‘s brutal ‘Euphoria’ diss track.

On Tuesday night, Lamar released the six-minute diss track against the rapper, calling him a “master manipulator” and questioning his abilities as a father amongst other accusations. It is the latest response in a feud ignited by Lamar, who hit out against Drake and J. Cole in his guest verse on Future and Metro Boomin‘s ‘Like That’ in March.

In response to the diss track, Drake shared a post online which seemed to mock Lamar’s lyrics: “I’m the biggest hater / I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress / I hate the way that you sneak diss, if I catch flight, it’s gon’ be direct” with a scene from cult romcom 10 Things I Hate About You.

In the original scene, Kat (Julia Stiles) reads out her poem about Patrick (Heath Ledger),  which begins: “I hate the way you talk to me and the way you cut your hair / I hate the way you drive my car, I hate it when you stare”. The poem eventually reveals her true romantic feelings for Patrick: “But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you / Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.”

As a nod to the poem’s intentions, Drake captioned the scene with a broken heart and winky face emoji.

As for Nicki Minaj, the rapper continued her world tour last night by returning to her hometown for a Barclays Center show in Brooklyn. She’s set to wrap up the US leg of the dates with shows in Oklahoma, Houston, Dallas and Austin over the next few days, before she heads across the pond for a run of European and UK tour dates.

Visit here for remaining tickets.

The tour comes in celebration of her long-awaited ‘Pink Friday 2’ album, which arrived in December and was described by NME as a “blockbuster sequel [that] lives up to the hype”.

“Comprising 22 tracks that unfold over 70 minutes, ‘Pink Friday 2’ is probably too long, but Minaj paces it sharply. The first half pings between lean, mean hip-hop tracks and melancholy midtempos, while the second half contains a smattering of pop-rap cuts including the Rick James-sampling ‘Super Freaky Girl’,” the four-star review read.

“Minaj’s ability to impose herself on an instantly familiar sample also drives ‘Everybody’, a frantic banger built on Junior Senior’s 2002 novelty hit ‘Move Your Body’. It’s the quirkiest moment on an album where Minaj is generally more restrained than in the past. Here, she doesn’t play around with alter-egos quite as freely as on ‘Pink Friday’.”

Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall’s THE WAEVE share “shining and seductive” new single ‘City Lights’

It marks the first single from their soon-to-be-announced sophomore album

The post Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall’s THE WAEVE share “shining and seductive” new single ‘City Lights’  appeared first on NME.

NME

Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall have dropped a new single as part of THE WAEVE, titled ‘City Lights’. Check it out below.

Shared this morning (May 2), the new track follows on from the release of their hit breakthrough album ‘THE WAEVE’ last year.

Capturing the same charm as in the critically-acclaimed debut, the new single sees Coxon and Dougall hone in on their already-signature sound, and capture a bold, sultry chorus.

Now your soul belongs to me/ It’ll be alright/ Out in the darkness, free to fly/ We’ll get some sleep tomorrow,” they sing at the beginning amid a high-energy riff and distorted guitars.

The track is written by the duo and produced by James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Florence + The Machine, Foals). It also sees both members taking on singing duties, as well as keyboards, guitar, bass guitar, drums and saxophone.

“The city lights bestow a unique magic on everyone – the beautiful and the grotesque, the angels and the devils – shining and seductive, one and all… Who wants to love you and who wants to destroy you?” they said of the new single. Check it out below.

As aforementioned, ‘City Lights’ marks THE WAEVE’s first new music since they shared their eponymous first album, and later dropped a deluxe-edition, and the track is released today as the first single from their forthcoming, soon-to-be-announced, sophomore album.

At time of writing, little is known about what to expect from the new release, although more details are set to be shared shortly.

‘City Lights’ also arrives just one day before The WAEVE are set to play a sold-out show at London’s Hoxton Hall (May 3), and a series of live performances throughout the summer.

The dates include support slots for Elbow, which include gigs in London, Birmingham, Manchester and more, as well as a run of festival appearances at Green Man, Isle of Wight and others.

Back in September 2022, THE WAEVE spoke to NME about their then-newly-announced project, and the former Blur guitarist-turned-solo star and the former Pipettes member-turned-Mark Ronson collaborator and singer-songwriter opened up about how they landed on their sound.

In the interview, Coxon explained how the two of them share “extremely wide and varied tastes in music”, but sought to fill one another’s “gaps in their musical education”.

“They were probably good gaps for her – a big Van der Graaf Generator and King Crimson gap – and maybe a couple of other jazzy gaps,” he recalled. “There were also some gaps in mine that are now filled with some very tasteful music!” Check out the NME interview in full above.

Olivia Rodrigo says she is ‘so disappointed’ after Co-Op Live shows postponed

The gigs are the latest to be pushed back by organisers, who cite “technical issues”

Olivia Rodrigo has spoken out about her upcoming shows at Manchester’s Co-Op Live being postponed at the last minute, saying that she is “so disappointed” by the news.

The pop star was set to perform at the new arena in Manchester tomorrow night (May 3) and Saturday (4) as part of her ongoing ‘GUTS World Tour’.

However, just two days before the shows were set to go ahead, an update was shared from the venue organisers, confirming that the dates had been pushed back due to ongoing technical issues at the arena.

It marked the latest in a series of shows that have been delayed due to ongoing issues with the opening week for Co-Op Live. Originally, the 23,500-capacity arena, located opposite the Etihad Stadium, was supposed to open with performances from Peter Kay on April 23 and 24. However, following a test event with Rick Astley, the comedian’s gigs were moved to April 29 and 30 due to a failed power test.

Later, a gig from The Black Keys that was scheduled for April 27 had to be moved to May 15, and the Peter Kay shows were moved for the second time. They are now expected to be held on May 23 and 24.

Initially, organisers ensured those with tickets that all other shows scheduled for the new venue would be going ahead as planned, however, they announced last night (May 1) that  A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie‘s show was cancelled following a “venue-related technical issue”.

The news arrived just 10 minutes after doors had opened for the gig, and fans were instructed to leave the area. Shortly afterwards, it was confirmed that Olivia Rodrigo’s shows would also be pushed back.

Now, the ‘Vampire’ singer has shared a statement about the postponement, and told fans that she has been left feeling “so disappointed” by the news.

“I’ve been having such a great time in Europe so far and I’m sooooo disappointed that we’re unable to perform in Manchester due to on-going venue-related technical issues,” she explained, writing on Instagram Stories.

“We’re doing our best to reschedule the show. you can hold onto your tickets for further info or request a refund at your point of purchase. More info will be sent directly to ticket holders,” she added. “I’m so bummed and I really hope to see you all soon”.

Following the venue announcement, a spokesperson for Co-Op Live told Manchester Evening News that the technical issue was caused by part of an air conditioning unit falling from the gantry inside the venue during soundcheck. Nobody was injured.

An employee who was there at the time reported to the outlet that he saw what looked like a “steel bar fall from the ceiling into the bowl” at about 5.30pm.

The circumstances that have led to the cancellation of both Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Olivia Rodrigo’s shows add on to the plethora of issues that have plagued the arena in recent weeks.

Before then, Co-Op Live and the existing, 21-000 capacity AO Arena in the city came to blows in a licensing row. ASM Global, which operates the latter, objected over “public safety” concerns and accused the application for a licence as being “simply unlawful”. Despite the row, the venue officially had its licence granted in March.

Liam Gallagher, Take That, Nicki Minaj and Keane are among the acts who have been announced to perform at Co-Op Live in the coming months. It’ll also stage the 2024 MTV European Music Awards later this year.

Ghost announce details of debut feature film ‘RITE HERE RITE NOW’

The film combines footage of their live show with an original story, and will hit cinemas next month

Ghost have shared details of a debut feature film, titled RITE HERE RITE NOW.

Set to arrive in cinemas worldwide next month, the film is the first of its kind from the metal group, and will combine footage of their September 2023 shows at The Forum in Los Angeles with a narrative that picks up plot threads from the band’s long-running webisode series.

It has been directed by the masked Swedish collective’s frontman Tobias Forge, alongside American filmmaker and actor Alex Ross Perry, and is set to arrive in cinemas globally on June 20 and 22 only.

A full trailer is set to launch next Thursday (May 9), and tickets for screenings will be available then too. Tickets and further details will arrive via the film’s own website at 2pm BST / 9am EDT / 6pm PDT.

You can visit here to sign up for more information, and a soundtrack album will also become available to preorder next Thursday.

The concert footage incorporated into the movie is taken from Ghost’s two sold-out shows at Los Angeles’ hallowed Kia Forum last September, where they wrapped up the ‘RE-IMPERATOUR U.S.A’ run of dates.

RITE HERE RITE NOW is, however, so much more than a concert movie,” reads a description, explaining how the film ties in the narrative from the band’s long-running Chapter series.

“The result is an utterly unique phantasmagorical blend: Flesh and bone renditions of favourites from all five of Ghost’s albums […] all interacting behind the scenes with Ghost’s Papa Emeritus IV, as his future and fate lay in the hands of the Ministry.

“Whether you’re a devoted disciple looking to relive treasured memories of the Ghost live spectacle or among the curious uninitiated, RITE HERE RITE NOW will put you right there: putting your phones down and living in the moment—as a shadow of uncertainty looms—completely spellbound and in the thrall of this bombastic yet intimate cinematic portrait of Ghost.”

The band’s founder and frontman Tobias Forge also shared a statement about the upcoming film, shedding light on how the idea arose.

“Over a decade ago when Ghost got signed to Loma Vista, Tom Whalley (owner and CEO) asked what the story of the band was,” he began. “He felt telling a story was vital in order to get new fans engaged. I said that because we were a new ‘baby’ band and more importantly we were an ANONYMOUS baby band, there wasn’t really a compelling story to tell.

“Not yet anyway. But I told him that if he wanted a story, I could come up with one. This film is the fruit of that conversation.”

Director Alex Ross Perry added that the collaboration with Forge was made to “expand the saga” of the band and “make a one-of-a-kind feast not only for Ghost fans, but all lovers of the cinematic alchemy between rock spectacle and spooky delights.”

News of the film comes shortly after the frontman revealed that he has already begun work on a new album. In an interview with Metal Hammer (via Louder Sound), the frontman revealed he had already started on the successor to ‘Impera’ and had completed a few new songs that will be part of the tracklist.

He also spoke to NME in April last year about the band’s covers EP ‘Phantomine’, where Forge revealed that the project could “cast a glimpse as to where I want to go with the band now”.

“That doesn’t mean that all of a sudden we’re going to sound like Television!” he said. “It just means that there are practical things in there that have inspired me to record this EP in a slightly different way than I have done previously.”

In more recent Ghost news, it was reported in March that someone purchased an unreleased solo album from the frontman and founder for a whopping amount of money.

Ed Sheeran has announced a one-off show in Brooklyn, celebrating 10 years since he shared ‘X’.

Announced today (May 1), the upcoming show will be held at the historic Barclays Center in New York, where the singer, songwriter and guitarist will take to the stage on May 22 for an exclusive performance.

The date comes in celebration of his now iconic sophomore album, ‘X’, which he shared back in 2014 and will be turning 10 years old this June. On the night, the concert setlist will reflect Sheeran’s ‘X (Wembley Edition)’ release from 2014.

To ensure that tickets are given to fans, the artist has partnered with Seated for an exclusive fan on-sale, where fans can register to be in with a chance of being selected for the opportunity to purchase tickets. Registration opened this morning and will close tomorrow (May 2) at 11:59 ET.

The general on-sale for tickets will be offered to the selective fans next Monday (May 6) at 10am ET via Ticketmaster.

As well as the upcoming show in Brooklyn, Sheeran will also be celebrating 10 years of ‘X’ by sharing a special anniversary edition of the LP on June 21 – exactly a decade since the original arrived.

The record will be available in various formats including an EcoRecord – a new, more ecologically sustainable LP format – and multiple bonus tracks.

Outside the original tracklist, which includes ‘Don’t’, ‘Sing’, ‘Photograph’, ‘Bloodstream’, and ‘Thinking Out Loud’, nine bonus tracks feature on the individual formats of the anniversary editions. All of these have never been released on vinyl up until now, and include ‘I See Fire’, which featured in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and ‘All of the Stars’, taken from The Fault In Our Stars.

The artist was playing at the Mahalaxmi Race Course in the Indian city, where he invited Dosanjh on stage with him to sing the latter’s song ‘Lover’ and delivered his lyrics in Punjabi, receiving cheers from the crowd.

Before then, it was revealed that he treated his parents and wife to a private three-hour visit to Paris’ Louvre museum, and Rick Astley performed a rendition of his track ‘Shape Of You’ during an appearance in the BBC Radio 2 Piano Room.

A list of the UK’s highest tax payers was also been published, including famous faces such as Sheeran and JK Rowling.
