Why ‘Three Lions’ is still the ultimate football anthem

Our columnist reflects on the footie song that still brings a tear to her eye

When was the last time you cried while watching something? Normal People? I May Destroy You? Nannette? The Masked Singer? (You know: out of sheer despair.) For me, it was rewatching the ‘Three Lions’ video just now as I gear up for the Euros, with the footie tournament starting tomorrow night.

Read more: The best football songs – ever!

It’s still the best football anthem ever, mostly because it went against what every other football anthem did before it and addressed the fact that (say it quietly) England aren’t always that good. There’s something about the chanting within the song and the blind hope that we might just do it that sends the tears streaming down my face: they’ve done it again; they’ve made me believe! All this, 25 years after the original release of Baddiel and Skinner and The Lightning Seeds’ anthem, which has been reissued on vinyl to mark the anniversary.

No wonder Three Lions’ was resurrected again for England’s nation-uniting performance in the 2018 World Cup. After The Tensest Game Known To Man() against Columbia – where we actually won on penalties – the streets were flooded with shocked and relieved fans stopping traffic and roaring ‘It’s Coming Home’ through their tears. Then, of course, it being 2018, there were the memes, with the song overlaid onto random clips (Putin at a piano, anyone?).

The song went in at Number One again, and it felt like the whole nation was singing our way to victory – until Croatia rudely dashed our hopes. I can’t imagine Brazil or France’s anthems have the same gravitas as our rousing one – songs called ‘We’ll probably win’ and ‘Crowded Trophy Cabinet’ just don’t get you in the same way.

If Noddy Holder is the patron saint of Christmas Royalties, Baddiel and Skinner and the Lightning Seeds are surely the Kings of The Football Anthem. The two poster boys for the nicer side of ’90s lad culture wrote the lyrics to the tune, with the band’s Ian Broudie on the music. You’d think they could probably fund the England team themselves at this stage, given the song’s success, but Baddiel has said he and Skinner made less than 900 quid from 5.6 million streams of the song.

Still, the song has contributed something more important than money Speaking to NME earlier this year, Broudie explained its appeal: “It was a tough ask to write a song like that and make it OK. All the other [football] songs before had been written from the team’s perspective, like ‘We’re going to win’, and the reason this one worked was because it was from a fan’s point of view.” He’s right: ‘Three Lions’ is the song of the people, about the team, not the team singing to us awkwardly and being forced to record a song (with the exception of John Barnes’ legendary performance on New Order’s ‘World In Motion’, of course).

Speaking of which, the official hierarchy of English football songs goes as follows:

  1. ‘Three Lions’
  2. Fat Les, ‘Vindaloo’
  3. New Order, ‘World in Motion’
  4. If we have to do a fourth, it’s And & Dec’s ‘On The Ball’, which isn’t great but it’s not bad

With the UK as it is at the moment (recovering after a global pandemic; that little thing called Brexit, if everyone remembers that; a Government that seems to be playing its own tournament of ‘Who’s The Shittest?’), it’s actually nice to be able to enjoy a little bit of national unity. Football is the only space where we can all sing about how we love our country without going a bit Laurence Fox on it. With Scotland and Wales in it this year, it’s all to play for; let friendly the rivalry begin. My own Scottish dad has already kicked off the trash talk in the family WhatsApp group.

Speaking to NME back in 1996, when the song was originally released, Baddiel said: “I think patriotism is a good thing. There’s nothing wrong with pride in your national identity, but obviously if you get shades of fascism and nationalism in it, it becomes a terrible thing… [‘Three Lions’] is modest in that it’s hopeful and there’s a sense of honour and pride and tradition in wearing the three lions on the shirt. You wouldn’t get that modesty if it was a fascistic, nationalistic song.’

Perhaps that’s the best and most English thing about it: it’s patriotic in the most English way ever. It’s apologetic and realistic; it’s putting our hands up and saying, “Look, I know that sometimes we can be a bit crap and luck is rarely on our side here, but how good would it be if we won.”

Now, as we prepare to watch the lads take on Europe’s best over the next couple of weeks, after everything the country has endured, you can hear it, quietly, being whispered on the wind, those piano chords getting louder, and those three words we all long to hear: “It’s coming home.”

‘Kim’s Convenience’ stars decry “racist” storylines and lack of diversity

“Our writer’s room lacked both East Asian and female representation”

Several cast members of Kim’s Convenience have spoken out against the show’s “overtly racist” storylines.

The fifth and final season of the longstanding Canadian sitcom launched on Netflix on June 2.

Shortly after the premiere, co-stars Simu Liu and Jean Yoon took to social media to voice their frustrations with the show.

In a lengthy Facebook post that was published on the same day that the final season launched, Liu listed the ways in which he felt that the show had let him down.

The actor, who will next star in Marvel‘s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, wrote: “I remain fixated on the missed opportunities to show Asian characters with real depth and the ability to grow and evolve.”

He added: “Our writer’s room lacked both East Asian and female representation, and also lacked a pipeline to introduce diverse talents.”

Liu concluded that he was “saddened” by the lack of growth that he believed that his character experienced.

Yoon, who played Liu’s mother on the show, took to Twitter shortly after to voice her support of her co-star.

“Storylines that were overtly racist, and so extremely culturally inaccurate that the cast came together and expressed concerns collectively,” she wrote.

A spokesman for CBC, which also broadcasts the show, told the BBC: “Respectfully, it’s not our place to speak on behalf of the producers or cast members of Kim’s Convenience.”

On Sunday (June 7) the official Kim’s Convenience Twitter account shared a post by Anita Kapila, a South Asian award-winning writer and co-executive producer, which praised a number of minority contributors to the show.

The tweet did not specifically reference any of the claims made by the actors, but did include the writer’s positive comments about her time on the show.

“I loved every writer who came into the Kim’s Convenience room,” Kapila said in the tweet. “But today I want to publicly acknowledge the women and BIPOC I was honoured to work alongside.”

BLABBERMOUTH.NET

Greek guitar virtuoso Gus G., well known in rock and metal circles for his work as Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist and as leader of his own band FIREWIND, has released a new solo single, "Fierce". The song's accompanying music video, in which Gus can be seen sporting black metal-style corpsepaint, can be seen below. Said Gus: "Boo! Check out the video for my brand new single, 'Fierce'! Don’t be scared, this is just a love story… I came up with the concept of a lonely rock star who eventually finds true love in the eyes of 'Necromantissa' — a girl he previously kept hostage in his dungeon. Music finally unites them and they live happily ever after and even form a metal band. Nightmare or reality?? We had tons of fun shooting this, getting in full makeup. "I love certain black metal & shock rock aesthetics & wanted to try something different, instead of doing yet another performance video. And I also wanted to make a video with my cats too. "Many thanks to Panagiotis Kountouras for the excellent directing once again, my immortal beloved & our cats Marquise and Leon." "Fierce" is the follow-up to the "Exosphere" single, which arrived in early April. Gus previously described "Fierce" as "a real metal track. If you guys like my past instrumentals or stuff that FIREWIND has done, the fast stuff, you're gonna like this," he said in a video message earlier this month. "It's a fast song. There's a lot of shredding. And a really funny video." Gus also revealed that there will be "more singles coming out" over the course of the next few months. "We're planning to release them in different phases, and then I think sometime around this fall, we're gonna drop the whole album," he said. "I guess it's a new way of doing things — kind of like teasing the album with singles first and seeing how they perform and what people think and let people get used to it." According to Gus, his new solo album is "finished — mixed and mastered. Dennis Ward [PINK CREAM 69, UNISONIC], he played bass on it and he mixed and mastered it," the guitarist said. "I have a new drummer who's playing on it. His name is [Jan-]Vincent Velazco. He's a great, killer drummer. He's from England. And he contacted me last year online, and he said, 'Hey, dude, if you need a drummer, let me know.' And I checked him out, and I was blown away by his skills, by his playing. So I thought hey, why not? Why not collaborate with somebody new? At the time, Johan [Nunez] was not available to record. 'Cause I was planning to ask Johan from FIREWIND to play. But he went back to school to finish a course, so I thought why not collaborate with Vincent? "I'm still not sure what to call the album, actually," Gus added. "I have an idea in mind; I have a title. But this is gonna be my first all-instrumental album, so there's a lot of guitar on it, different things on it — not just metal stuff. There's some more mellow, some bluesier things, but then, of course, there's a lot of shredding too. And I'm looking forward to releasing it. It's a big step for me." "Exosphere" was released on April 1. The track featured Ward on bass and Velazco on drums. The artwork for the single was created by Gustavo Sazes, with whom Gus has worked since 2007. "Exosphere" was written during times of pandemic and was Gus's first attempt at using a seven-string guitar in an official recording. In September 2019, Gus issued a digital-only solo EP, "Live In Budapest - Part 1", consisting of four tracks recorded on the guitarist's headline European tour in support of his latest album release, "Fearless". The world tour saw Gus and his band share stages around the world with legendary guitarists like Richie Kotzen, Vinnie Moore followed by his own headline dates and a massive tour as special guest of Los Angeles rockers STEEL PANTHER. "Fearless" was released in April 2018 via AFM Records. The follow-up to 2015's "Brand New Revolution" marked Gus's first release since exiting Osbourne's band in 2017. On "Fearless", Gus joined forces with Ward and drummer Will Hunt (EVANESCENCE). FIREWIND's ninth, self-titled studio album was made available in May 2020. The band recently parted ways with guitarist/keyboardist Bob Katsionis and singer Henning Basse. FIREWIND's new vocalist is Herbie Langhans, who has previously played with AVANTASIA and SINBREED.

Kid Rock repeats homophobic slur while addressing recent video of him saying homophobic slur

The country star repeated the offensive term as he defended the previous incident on social media

Kid Rock has unrepentantly doubled down on his recent use of a homophobic slur by repeating the slur in question on Twitter.

The rapper was filmed calling fans “f*****s” on Saturday night (June 5) as they captured footage of his performance at Tennessee’s FishLipz Bar & Grill.

At one point, he was heard to yell “fuck your iPhone” and then pointed to his crotch and sang: “You can post this, you can post this, you can post this dick right now.”

He subsequently screamed: “You fucking f*****s with your phones out,” before the video gets cut off.

Addressing the controversy over his comments last night (June 9) in a post on the official Kid Rock Twitter account under his real name, Bob Ritchie, he wrote: “If Kid Rock using the word ‘f****t’ offends you, good chance you are one. Either way, I know he has a lot of love for his gay friends and I will have a talk with him. Have a nice day. – Bob Ritchie.”

While NME has chosen to star out Kid Rock’s use of the slur, the controversial country star failed to do so.

Responding to the post, one Twitter user wrote: “Someone with gay friends wouldn’t use that word as an insult. Enjoy the continued loss of fans and income.”

This latest controversy to engulf Kid Rock comes after he previously launched a vicious on-stage rant against Oprah Winfrey in 2019.

The US star went on a lengthy rant during a performance at his own Big Ass Honky Tonk Rock N’ Roll Steakhouse in Nashville.

In footage obtained from the event, Ritchie is heard shouting “Fuck Oprah Winfrey!” to a crowd, before continuing to attack TV personalities Kathie Lee Gifford and Joy Behar. He later remarks that she can “suck dick sideways.”

He subsequently said of the incident: “I have a big mouth and drink too much sometimes, shocker! I also work hard and do a ton to help others out but that’s just back page news because the press hates I love Trump, fuck them too. I am what I am, I ain’t what I ain’t!”

Rock is also known to be close friends with country star Morgan Wallen, who faced a ban from radio stations across the US earlier this year after he screamed the N-word at a friend during a drunken night out.

Wallen subsequently returned to the stage at Kid Rock‘s Nashville bar last month, making a surprise performance for fans.

GENE SIMMONS Blasts ‘Moron’ Politician For Asking Forest Service To Alter Moon’s Orbit To Combat Climate Change

BLABBERMOUTH.NET

KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons has blasted a Texas politician for drawing a connection between the moon and Earth's orbit and solar flares to climate change. On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican, asked a representative from the U.S. Forest Service if it was possible to alter the orbit of the moon or the Earth as a way of combating climate change. During a live-streamed national parks, forests and public lands subcommittee meeting of the National Resources Committee, Gohmert addressed Jennifer Eberlein, the associate deputy chief for the National Forest System. He said: "I understand from what's been testified to, the Forest Service and the (Bureau of Land Management), you want very much to work on the issue of climate change." He went on to say that he understood NASA's data shows the Earth's and the moon's orbits are "changing slightly." "And so, is there anything that the National Forest Service or BLM can do to change the course of the moon's orbit or the Earth's orbit around the sun?" he asked. "Obviously, that would have profound effects on our climate." Eberlein paused before responding, "I would have to follow up with you on that one, Mr. Gohmert." "Yeah? Well, if you figure out a way that you in the Forest Service can make that change, I'd like to know," Gohmert said. Earlier today, Simmons shared a Yahoo! News article about Gohmert's comments, and he included the following message: "Please pardon my language. What an Effin Moron…Texas Republican. Gohmert suggests altering moon's orbit to combat climate change". Gohmert, an outspoken opponent of Democrats' plans to combat climate change, responded to the backlash on Twitter by pointing out that Tuesday's hearing "was about the BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT & climate change." In the past, Gohmert has repeatedly said he does not believe climate change is a manmade problem. "We can't do anything substantive about the climate change right now, when the moon's orbit is apparently changing some, the Earth's orbit is changing some, according to NASA," he told Fox Business network last month.

Get ready to go back to school, with demon friends

Monark, a new RPG from former Shin Megami Tensei developers has been announced for release later this year.

The upcoming RPG is slated for release on October 14 in Japan and will release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. It will be published by developer Lancarse, and published by FuRyu. There is no western release date yet.

Gematsu has reported that the scenario is being developed with the help of SMT alumni Ryutaro Ito, with character designs from artist so-bin.

A Japanese trailer that shows off the art and the music of the game is available below:

Monark is set in a high school and follows the story of the True Student Council, a group established to solve abnormal situations that have arisen in the school. Like SMT and Persona before it, the game appears to tap into the weird and supernatural.

The game promises multiple endings, with different routes for each of the four buddy characters the protagonist can choose to ally with. Battles are planned to be command-based with a free movement system.

A ‘madness’ gauge in battle can be increased to perform more powerful skills, but increasing it too much will cause characters to go on a rampage.

Also confirmed is an ‘EGO’ system, which tracks the player’s desire based on the seven deadly sins, which can affect the demons the player hires for battle.

Gematsu was able to translate some of the comments from the Famitsu article which announced the game, where Ito explained that he worked on stories for “100 students” whilst composer Tsukasa Masuko “worked on about 40 songs.”

In other Battlefield 2042 has been slated for an October 2021 release. The latest installment in the franchise will see players battle out in 128 matches in a new near-future setting.

Ubisoft to adopt “hybrid” work from home scheme later this year

An email sent to Ubisoft employees about a new approach to working from home has been published on their website. The company intends to adopt a “hybrid” system with mandatory and optional office days from September 2021.

Ubisoft has released an internal email on their website outlining how they intend to introduce a “hybrid” work-from-home system for its employees after changes were made due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’ve been preparing for a post-lockdown world in which we will be able to offer you more flexible ways of working.” the email, penned by chief people officer Anika Grant states.

“In the future we will embrace a hybrid and tailored approach to work arrangements. This means many of you will be able to balance in-office work with work from home.”

However not all employees will have the option to work from home. “Jobs that are incompatible with working from home given their nature or due to technical constraints will remain fully office based.”

The new system will be see select members of staff determine what is best for each team. “People managers will work with their teams to define and implement these work arrangements. This may mean, for example, designating specific days where everyone must be in the office and other days where office presence is optional.”

The hybrid system will not be deployed immediately. “We expect most Ubisoft entities will start transitioning to these new working arrangements in September 2021; however, some may start earlier and others later.”

The email also adds that they are exploring the idea of a new “work from anywhere benefit”. This would allow employees to work outside of their office for up to four weeks per year.

WOLFGANG VAN HALEN Shoots Down Rumor VAN HALEN Recorded 60 Songs During ‘A Different Kind Of Truth’ Sessions

BLABBERMOUTH.NET

In a new interview with Songfacts, Wolfgang Van Halen, who became VAN HALEN's bassist in 2006 at the age of 15, was asked which songs he had the most hand in writing on 2012's "A Different Kind Of Truth", the sole VAN HALEN studio album he played on. He responded: "'Stay Frosty' was an idea Dave [Lee Roth, vocals] brought in that was completely original and not stemming from an older demo, but in terms of structure, I was the one that put it together. It was just this little acoustic ditty, and we were, like, 'Well, what do we do? We're not sure.' I was the one who actually structured the entire song on how it would go. And then there were the more fresher ideas like 'China Town' and 'The Trouble With Never', which I was really able to insert my own flair into and do the tapping intro with the capo on 'China Town'. But ideas like that, and 'You And Your Blues'. 'As Is' was a fresher idea. The ideas that were stemming from older ideas were things like 'She's The Woman', 'Beats Workin'', 'Bullethead', 'Big River', and stuff like that." Asked if there were any leftover songs from the "A Different Kind Of Truth" sessions, Wolfgang said: "There were not. I don't know where this rumor came out saying that we recorded, like, 60 songs. What's on the album is everything we recorded. I have no idea where that rumor came from. There was one song we almost did that we wrote in the studio, but it fell apart before we had the chance to do it. It's so weird — I see VAN HALEN fans on Twitter go, 'I have the inside track... they recorded like, 60 songs.' And it's, like, 'No. No. No.'" With Wolfgang on bass, VAN HALEN embarked on lengthy tours in 2007, 2012 and 2015. The band's final run of shows took place in the summer and fall of 2015. The North American trek included 41 concerts beginning on July 5, 2015 and ending on October 4, 2015. Last fall, Wolfgang revealed that his father had contemplated a "kitchen-sink" VAN HALEN tour that would have included former bassist Michael Anthony, as well as vocal turns from both Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth. There was even talk about bringing back Gary Cherone, who sang with the band on one poorly received album, 1998's "Van Halen III". In early 2019, a rumor surfaced that the classic VAN HALEN lineup would reunite that summer for a run of stadium shows. This would have been the first time that Michael, David, Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen performed together since 1984. The rumors originally started with Roth, who hinted to Vulture that VAN HALEN would be playing stadiums with Anthony back in the lineup. VAN HALEN and Anthony had not been on good terms for more than a decade, with Anthony not invited to join the reunion with Roth that began in 2007. Anthony took a pay cut and signed away all of his rights to the band name and logo in order to participate in VAN HALEN's 2004 tour, which featured Hagar. Eddie died in October at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California. The iconic VAN HALEN axeman died from complications due to cancer, his son confirmed.
