Z2 Comics and heavy metal titans ANTHRAX have announced the "Among The Living" graphic novel, to be released in stores globally next month.
Since the first announcement of the upcoming graphic novel inspired by the band's landmark 1987 album, the project has remained one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Today, it is announced that the "Among The Living" graphic novel will be released in stores everywhere on July 6. In an effort to support the comic book specialty market, which had been hardest hit by the COVID-19 health crisis of the past year, ANTHRAX and Z2 shipped a surprise limited number of copies early that stores could make available for sale this week.
"I grew up with Marvel and DC, and they were part of my life from the time I was four or five years old," said ANTHRAX's Charlie Benante. "My mom worked at Primrose Bakery on Tremont Avenue in New York, and when I'd go to work with her, I'd sit in the back with the bakers. I'd read and draw the superheroes from the comics she would buy for me from this little shop just a couple of doors down. I've loved everything about comic books and the neighborhood comic book stores ever since."
The project pulls together a who's who of names from around comics and music for a track-by-track storyline inspired by one of heavy metal's most iconic albums, with all four members of the classic ANTHRAX lineup contributing.
An anthology narrated by longtime mascot "The Not Man" newly designed by Greg Nicotero ("The Walking Dead") and written by Jimmy Palmiotti ("Harley Quinn", "Blondie: Against The Odds") and illustrated by classic "Aliens" artist Nelson; "Among The Living" unites bandmembers Joey Belladonna, Frank Bello, Charlie Benante and Scott Ian with writers, artists, and other rock legends in a tribute to their landmark 1987 album, featuring covers by JG Jones, Eric Powell, and a preorder variant from Charlie Benante. Additional interior art and chapter breaks by Sawblade, Brian Ewing and Josh Bernstein.
Scott Ian will contribute an original story inspired by the fan favorite anthem "I Am The Law", featuring the legendary comic book antihero Judge Dredd, in partnership with 2000 AD. This will make official the decades-long connection between the character and the band, rewarding comic book fans and metalheads alike, and features art by longtime Dredd artist Chris Weston.

ANTHRAX's landmark 1987 album influenced an entire generation of metalheads, cementing the New York band's place in the "Big Four" of thrash alongside METALLICA, MEGADETH and SLAYER. The first in a string of gold-certified ANTHRAX albums amounting to millions of records sold in North America alone, "Among The Living" ranks high in "The 100 Greatest Metal Albums Of All Time" (Rolling Stone), "The 50 Best Metal Albums Of The Last 50 Years" (Metal Hammer), and "The 25 Greatest Thrash Metal Albums Ever (Kerrang!)." As recently as March 2020, Loudwire noted that the Decibel Hall Of Fame inductee is "now widely regarded as one of the best thrash metal albums of all time."

In a statement released before his first performance on Broadway, Springsteen said he wanted the show to be “as personal and intimate as possible.” He said: “I chose Broadway for this project because it has the beautiful old theatres, which seemed like the right setting for what I have in mind.
“In fact, with one or two exceptions, the 960 seats of the Walter Kerr Theatre is probably the smallest venue I’ve played in the last 40 years.”
At the event, Springsteen spoke about the influence of California on his sound, at which point he revealed that the west coast state was central to his next record.
“California was an enormous influence on some of my most topical writing through my ‘90s, 2000s and even now,” Springsteen said. “We have a record coming out soon that’s set largely in the West.”
It will be his first release since 2020’s ‘Letter To You’, which followed on from 2019’s ‘Western Stars’, a nod to the music of the American West.
Developed by Spanish adventure game studio Pendulo, Alfred Hitchcock – Vertigo will unfold its story through the eyes of 3 separate characters. It will release on Steam, PlayStation 4 /5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch.
The synopsis reads “Writer Ed Miller came out unscathed from his car crash down into Brody Canyon, California. Even though no one was found inside the car wreckage, Ed insists that he was traveling with his wife and daughter. Traumatized by this event, he begins to suffer from severe vertigo. As he starts therapy, he will try to uncover what really happened on that tragic day.”
Narrative designer Josué Monchan shared the influences behind this game. “Of course, Alfred Hitchcock’s movie was a major inspiration source, whether it’s about the game’s themes, its narration, or even the visual techniques we used that clearly mirror Hitchcock’s recurrent cinematographic techniques”
“Vertigo is not our only frame of reference. For instance, the fact that therapy is at the core of the narrative echoes Spellbound, and some characters resemble protagonists from Rebecca, Psycho, and many more”.
Pendulo Studios have been producing adventure games since 1994. Their previous games include Runaway: A Road Adventure, Yesterday, and Blacksad: Under the Skin.
Originally released in 1958, Vertigo was based on the French novel D’entre Les Morts (From Among the Dead) and starred James Stewart as former detective John “Scottie” Ferguson.
Forced into retirement after developing vertigo during service in the line of duty, Scottie is hired as a private investigator to follow a client’s wife.

4AD has partnered with Northumbria University to launch a new scholarship, named in honour of the indie label’s legendary graphic designer Vaughan Oliver.
The Vaughan Oliver Graphic Design Scholarships have been set up with Oliver’s wife Lee, and will launch this September. An annual memorial lecture in Oliver’s name is also planned.
In celebration of the life of the inimitable Vaughan Oliver we have been working closely with his alma mater @NorthumbriaUni and wife Lee to establish The Vaughan Oliver Graphic Design Scholarships
Three graphic design scholarships will be awarded over the next decade to “support, enhance and extend students’ education and employability development within the sector.”
One scholarship will be awarded to a second year Graphic Design BA (Hons) student transitioning into their final year of study to help kick start their career.
Two other £2,500 scholarships will be given to students who live in the North East of England and are applying for Northumbria’s Graphic Design undergraduate programme, irrespective of their background. Full details can be found here.
In an article following his death, NME described Oliver as “gifted with an ability not merely to reflect the titles and themes of the artists he worked with but the essence of the music itself.
“His cover art captured the mystery, gruesomeness, intangible ennui and cult enchantment of 4AD’s dark, amorphous and sometimes visceral brand of alternative culture.
