Orla Gartland has discussed the use of her track ‘Why Am I Like This?’ in Heartstopper, describing it as a “match made in heaven”.

The 2019 track found success after it was featured in the Netflix series during a pivotal scene where Nick (Kit Connor) questions his feelings for best friend Charlie (Joe Locke) and searches on Google: “Am I gay?”

As Nick hits the return key, the screen cuts to black and the song’s chorus – which repeats the title of the track – plays over the credits.

Speaking to NME backstage at Truck Festival about the scene, Gartland said: “I could not have asked for more. It’s so interesting I’ve never had anything like that, where I feel like I’m used to putting out music and trying to induce an excitement that isn’t there.

“You’re trying to get other people to form a connection with your song in any way that you can, building a visual world around it, whatever it is. That was the first time I’ve had where there’s already people connecting with it and they’re connecting with the show.

“I got really lucky that it was in a really pivotal scene of the show. I think that was a real stroke of luck. I got really lucky that they weren’t talking over it. It was just a real match made in heaven.”

She added: “And then you get this beautiful thing where people are connecting with it for a reason that kind of isn’t nothing to do with me, and I become a passenger to this thing that’s happening. The mission is then not trying to induce excitement but actually just sort of catch the passing traffic, and I’ve never had that feeling before. It’s been amazing.”

After the show was released in April, ‘Why Am I Like This?’ reached Number Four on Billboard’s Top TV Songs chart with 1.4million US on-demand streams [via Luminate].

Heartstopper was in May renewed for two more seasons, a month after it debuted on Netflix. The show is based on the graphic novels by Alice Oseman, which were originally released in 2018.

Calvin Harris has revealed the star-studded track list for his new album.

His new album, ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2’, is released on August 2 and features the likes of Dua Lipa, Young Thug, Stefflon Don, Charlie Puth, Shenseea, Normani, Tinashe, Offset, Busta Rhymes, Jorja Smith, Justin Timberake, HalseyLil Durk, Snoop Dogg, Latto, Swae Lee, and Pharrell and Pusha T – and many more.

You can see the full list of collaborators here:

Earlier this month, Harris shared an official video for his new single ‘Stay With Me’ featuring Justin TimberlakeHalsey and Pharrell Williams.

‘Stay With Me’ followed the tracks ‘New Money’ featuring 21 Savage and ‘Potion’ (feat. Dua Lipa and Young Thug) which have been released from the album so far.

Back in January Harris released his latest Love Regenerator track, ‘Lonely’, which featured Sananda Maitreya. Last year, Harris collaborated with Tom Grennan on the song ‘By Your Side’.

Harris played a special set at last month’s Glastonbury, DJing from inside the awe-inspiring Arcadia spider.

Reviewing the late-night set, NME said: “Blame it on the ley lines, or the otherworldly experience of standing shoulder to shoulder with ecstatic music lovers with the stars as a backdrop, but the lovelorn dance tracks Harris is known for take on new optimistic tones under the metal spider-fueled inferno.

“‘How Deep Is Your Love’ transforms from an angry inquisition to a recognition that boundless adoration is possible. The lyrics “we found love in a hopeless place” mutate from a proclamation of a sad memory into nostalgic gratitude that even dejected spaces can be fertile ground for romance.”

Beyoncé’s ‘RENAISSANCE’ revealed to be a three-part project

“This three act project was recorded over three years during the pandemic,” Beyoncé wrote

Beyoncé‘s new album ‘RENAISSANCE‘ is a three-part project, according to material supporting the record’s vinyl release.

A fan who has received their vinyl shared an image from an accompanying booklet in which Beyoncé writes about the “three act project” being recorded over the last three years.

“This three act project was recorded over three years during the pandemic,” Beyoncé wrote. “A time to be still, but also a time I found to be the most creative.”

It’s not clear if the ‘RENAISSANCE’ album that the pop star is releasing tomorrow (July 29) is the ‘act i’ that is referenced in the note. Additionally, it’s not known if the other two parts – as well as their titles – will land tomorrow, come as separate releases or be presented in other formats. NME has reached out to Beyoncé’s representatives for comment.

Elsewhere in the note, Beyoncé said: “Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world. It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving. My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration.”

The news follows the official composer credits for ‘RENAISSANCE’ being released last week. Contributors can be seen by viewing the page source of its listing on Apple Music. The information was also shared on the Twitter fansite @BeyLegion.

Acts listed include Nile Rodgers (on ‘Cuff It’), Pharrell Williams and Skrillex (both on ‘Energy’), Drake (‘Heated’), A.G. Cook (‘All Up In Your Mind’) and BloodPop (‘All Up In Your Mind’ and ‘Pure/Honey’).

Meanwhile, listening parties around the world have been teased for the singer’s seventh album – her first since 2016’s ‘Lemonade‘ – ahead of its arrival.

Earlier this week numerous country-specific branches of Sony Music announced ‘Club Renaissance’ listening parties in their regions, set to take place tonight (July 28) in the hours before Bey’s new album is released.

Listening parties – access to which can be secured via a competition through the respective Sony countries’ social media accounts – have been confirmed in places including Paris, BerlinAmsterdam and Ghent in Belgium.

The album has so far been previewed with just one single, ‘Break My Soul’. Its 16-song tracklist was also shared recently.

Hayden Thorpe unveils deluxe edition of second album and shares new song ‘Polygod’

“I think of this release as a Director’s Cut”

NME

Hayden Thorpe has today (July 28) unveiled details of a deluxe edition release of his second album, ‘Moondust For My Diamond’, along with new song ‘Polygod’.

The collection, titled ‘Moondust For My Diamond – Every Piece Of Dust’ edition, contains four new songs and four new remixes. It will receive a digital-only release on August 19.

One of the new tracks from the collection, ‘Polygod’, has also been shared. Watch the video for that below.

Produced by Nathan Jenkins (aka Bullion) and Richard Formby, the four new tracks hear Thorpe explore “a deeper, and more seductive side to his song writing”, according to a press release.

Speaking about the origins of the new tracks, the former Wild Beasts frontman said: “‘Every Piece of Dust’ brings into the family all of the stray songs that were written alongside ‘Moondust For My Diamond’.

“I think of this release as a Director’s Cut – indulging some of the choices that went unmade up until now. There’s a mini-grief that happens when you finish off and move on from a record – you almost have to say, ‘I’m moving on forever.’ However these songs stave off execution day for sometime yet.

“I feel so lucky to have such gifted friends make these remixes for me. Each one of them have in some way elevated and maximised all that the song could be. It’s so thrilling and heartening to have people you care about create alongside you. It’s a collection I’m really proud of for that reason.”

The musician has also announced details of a special evening in London on August 25 to celebrate the release of his Full Moon Chronicles Zine, a collection of essays that Thorpe has written over the last few years.

Thorpe will be reading and performing at the Brick Lane Bookshop event in London and you can get tickets for the event here.

Reviewing ‘Diviner’, Thorpe’s first solo album in 2019, NME wrote: “Wild Beasts sometimes seemed overly enamoured with ideology, self-aware to a fault, while Thorpe’s solo album is simpler, more direct, more self-contained – and therein lies its power.”
