Matt Lucas is to release the reimagined version of his classic song about a baked potato from TV quiz show Shooting Stars, in order to raise founds for a new campaign to feed NHS workers.

The comedian, who played giant baby George Dawes on the surreal Reeves & Mortimer show, reworked the lyrics of the cult comedy song last week to provide tips on how to avoid the virus.

In the new version of the back-and-forth song, Lucas sings: “If you want to know what is wrong from right, you must listen to what potato say. Wash your hands and stay indoors, thank you baked potato. Only go to grocery stores, thank you baked potato.

After the song became a viral sensation, Lucas has since confirmed he’ll release it to raise funds for a new campaign to feed NHS workers.

Lucas said: “The Baked Potato Song” was something I sung on Shooting Stars 20 years ago and in an idle moment on Tuesday night I rewrote the lyrics and updated them. Baked Potato is always giving good advice and the new advice in the new version of the song is about washing your hands, staying indoors and only going to grocery stores.

“I urge everyone to go out and buy the single this week and raise vital money for the FeedNHS campaign.”

FeedNHS is a new campaign created by Lucas, actor Damian Lewis and his wife Helen McCroy, who have joined forces with restaurant chain LEON. The new campaign aims to raise £1million, and provide 6,000 meals per day for staff who are working in critical care units in London hospitals.

Lucas appeared on the quiz show as scorekeeper Dawes between 1995-2009.

He isn’t the only comedian to revisit their classic material in a bid to raise spirits. Earlier this month, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost joined forces to put together a Shaun of The Dead themed coronavirus public service announcement.

Arnold Schwarzenegger also provided tips to stay safe amid the pandemic – delivered from the comfort of his private hot tub. And Queer Eye’s Antoni Porowski has been hosting quarantine-themed cooking lessons on Instagram.

Meanwhile, musicians have taken the opportunity to live-stream performances and chats from their homes, isolated venues or recording studios, including Christine And The QueensColdplay’s Chris MartinU2’s Bono and Yungblud.
