Olivia Rodrigo The Weeknd

The nominations for the 2021 American Music Awards have been announced, with Olivia Rodrigo and The Weeknd leading the pack.

The list of nominees was revealed earlier today (October 28) on Good Morning America and Spotify’s The Get Up, as well as via the AMAs Twitter account.

Rodrigo has nabbed seven nominations for her first year at the AMAs, including Artist Of The Year, New Artist Of The Year, Favourite Female Pop Artist, Favourite Pop Album for ‘Sour’, and Favourite Trending Song, Favourite Music Video and Favourite Pop Song, all for ‘Drivers License’.

The Weeknd, meanwhile, follows on six nods, including Artist Of The Year, Favourite Male Pop Artist, Favourite Male R&B Artist, Favourite Music Video for ‘Save Your Tears’, Favourite Pop Song for the Ariana Grande remix of ‘Save Your Tears’ and Favourite Latin Song for his Maluma collaboration, ‘Hawái (Remix)’.

Bad Bunny, Doja Cat and Giveon have also received five nominations each, while the likes of BTS, Drake and Megan Thee Stallion are also up for multiple categories.

Disgraced country star Morgan Wallen has been nominated for two awards – Favourite Country Album and Favourite Male Country Artist – but will not be allowed to attend the ceremony. “Morgan Wallen is a nominee this year based on charting,” the awards organiser MRC Live & Alternate said in a statement.

“As his conduct does not align with our core values, we will not be including him on the show in any capacity (performing, presenting, accepting). We plan to evaluate his progress in doing meaningful work as an ally to the Black community and will consider his participation in future shows.”

The 2021 American Music Awards covers the period between September 25, 2020, and September 23, 2021. Three new categories have been added – Favourite Trending Song, Favourite Gospel Artist and Favourite Latin Duo or Group – while three have also been removed. They are Favourite Social Artist, Favourite Artist – Adult Contemporary and Favourite Soundtrack.

This year’s ceremony will take place at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater on November 21 at 8pm ET (1am GMT).
