Consequence of Sound

Earlier this month, Interpol frontman Paul Banks announced his new band Muzz, which also consists of The Walkmen’s Matt Barrick and Bonny Light Horeseman’s Josh Kaufman. Today, they’re sharing their first official single, “Broken Tambourine”.

The track has a similar feel to “Bad Feeling”, the chilled-out indie rock tune they anonymously put out as an informal introduction to Muzz. Except “Broken Tambourine”, their Matador Records debut, is even more mellow, spacious, and gradually climactic. Once again, it’s strikingly different from the brooding post-punk of Interpol and about the farthest thing from the weirdo hip-hop that Banks has made with Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA.

Below, take time to bask in its intergalactic music video, produced by Banks himself.

According to a press release, Muzz have actually been recording together since 2015. Banks and Kaufman are longtime friends who met in high school, and all three members have collaborated together on numerous other projects over the years.

Last week, Muzz posted a snippet to their Instagram page of actor Michael Shannon (The Shape of WaterRevolutionary Road) interviewing the bandmates about their origins. The caption indicates that the clip is just “part one,” so it’s likely that Muzz will share more footage of the interview in the near future.
