‘The Acolyte’ trailer looks “cheap”, say ‘Star Wars’ fans

The new series is set to be released in June

The first trailer for Star Wars spin-off series, The Acolyte, has been released and fans have taken to social media to share their thoughts.

The series, which stars The Hunger Games’ Amandla Stenburg and Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae in the leading roles, is set approximately 100 years before the events of the Star Wars prequel series, starting with The Phantom Menace.

The action-packed trailer, which was released earlier this week, teases the new characters and events which will unfold, including a threat on the Jedi community. See the full trailer below.

Some fans, however, seem to be disappointed in the quality of the trailer, and many have taken to X/Twitter to share their thoughts.

Several fans have commented that the trailer for the show makes it look “cheap”, with one user asking why this seems to be the case for all products by the franchise.

Another acknowledged the franchise’s notoriously large budgets, comparing the upcoming series to recent Disney+ drama, Shōgun: “They spend a zillion dollars on these to come out looking like trash. Meanwhile Shogun uses the same tech and looks amazing for television.”

One user criticised the quality of the trailer, writing: “Looks like a fan made film”, while another said: “Was expecting better than this one”.

Some fans have been critical of the characters shown in the trailer, specifically the lack of aliens. One user wrote on X: “Looks alright, but there really should be more aliens. I know they’re trying to cut costs but this feels like it takes place on Earth somewhere…”

However, there are some positive responses to the trailer, with many users describing it as “cool”. One wrote: “This is the type of show I’ve been waiting for since Disney bought Star Wars” while another wrote: “The Force is strong with this one, can’t wait to see more!”

The series title for The Acolyte was announced in December, after filming wrapped up last June. It was created by Leslye Headland, the co-creator of the Netflix series, Russian Doll. The eight-episode series is set to air on Disney+ on June 4.

These hit Netflix shows won’t be returning this year after all

New episodes of ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘The Watcher’ won’t be released this year

Netflix has revealed the series set to air on the platform in 2024, and there are some highly anticipated shows not included on the list.

Due to various reasons, including the writers and actors strikes which took place last year, many projects have been delayed and their release dates pushed back.

One series to be expected no earlier than 2025 is the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. One of Netflix’s flagship shows, the final season of the sci-fi drama is keenly awaited by fans. It’s almost two years since the release of its latest season, which came out in May 2022.

Production on season five began earlier this month, but it won’t be released until at least next year.

Also left off the list is the platform’s most popular series, Wednesday. The second season of The Addams Family spin-off starring Jenna Ortega won’t begin production until late April, meaning it won’t be included in this year’s releases.

Other series not releasing any new instalments this year include the third season of comedy-drama Ginny & Georgia, Sweet Magnolias, and Virgin River, which isn’t scheduled to start filming its sixth season until the spring.

The second season of mystery thriller The Watcher, starring Naomi Watts, Jennifer Coolidge and Richard Kind among other big names, isn’t scheduled for a 2024 release either, despite being renewed for another season back in November 2022.

But there are plenty of new episodes of some popular television series to look forward to in 2024, with the return of Squid Game, a fourth season of Emily In Paris, and the third instalment in the historical romance series, Bridgerton, which is set to focus on the character of Colin.

Last month, Ortega teased some details about the second series of Wednesday.

Get ready for more Netflix price rises

The streaming service have hinted at potential price increases

The post Get ready for more Netflix price rises appeared first on NME.

Netflix have announced that they may ask members to increase how much they are paying for the service.

The streaming platform released its quarterly shareholder letter this week, which contains details of a potential cost increase for subscribers.

The letter read: “As we invest in and improve Netflix, we’ll occasionally ask our members to pay a little extra to reflect those improvements, which in turn helps drive the positive flywheel of additional investment to further improve and grow our service.”

Currently a standard subscription in the UK costs £10.99 a month, allowing viewers to watch on two devices at a time. The ad-supported subscription is £4.99 a month, which, according to Netflix, has 23million monthly active users. In total, the streaming platform currently has more than 260million global users.

Back in July 2023, Netflix announced that the basic ad-free plan, which cost £6.99 would no longer be available to new subscribers. From October 2023, the price for a membership allowing users to watch on one device at a time, increased to £7.99.

The inventory on the site is set to increase, with WWE’s flagship programme, Raw, joining the platform in 2025. According to CNBC, the company is reportedly paying $5billion (£3.9billion) for a decade of the program. Featuring 52 weeks of live shows each year, this will become Netflix’s biggest step into the streaming of live entertainment.

As a result of this new content, Netflix may ask its users to pay more money for their subscription, although this was not confirmed in the quarterly letter.

The letter’s summary reads: “In 2024, we see big opportunities to increase our value to members by further improving the core (series and film),while broadening our offering (games, live and sports-adjacent programming)”.

Netflix has confirmed that this year will see the release of new seasons of hit shows, including Squid Game, Bridgerton and Emily In Paris.

Season one of the spin-off game show came to a dramatic conclusion in the final episode, which was released onto Netflix on Wednesday (December 6).

Adapted from the hit Netflix K-drama Squid Game, the new game show saw 456 contestants whittled down to a final three: Phillip Cain, Mai Whelan and Samuel Wells, who were competing for the jackpot sum of $4.56m (£3.57m) – the biggest cash prize in TV history.

Just like the K-drama, The Challenge saw the contestants compete in a number of simple children’s games, with multiple players being eliminted in each round.

The climactic episode saw contestants Mai and Phillip progress to the final challenge, which saw them play Rock, Paper, Scissors for a chance to win the keys to the safe containing the massive jackpot.

After winning the game and successfully opening the vault, Mai was crowned the show’s first-ever winner and recipient of the enormous cash prize.

“Today just validates that anything is possible,” Vietnamese-born 55-year-old Mai Whelan said after winning. “Even when you feel down and afraid, you have to pick yourself up, be a strong person and focus.”

In a new interview with The Times, Whelan has confirmed that she has not received a “cent” of her winnings.“I feel like Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire. Show me the money!” she said.

Whelan added that she plans on donating some of the money to charities focused on the underprivileged, wildlife and climate change, and is considering a retirement home for her and her husband.

She said: “It was a relief to go back to normal life and not worry about getting eliminated. I needed that after two and a half weeks of intense go, go, go, and emotional ups and downs.”

Squid Game: The Challenge has been Netflix’s most watched show for the past fortnight, with 20.5million views in its first week and 11.4million in its second.

On Wednesday (6 December), it was announced that The Challenge has been renewed for a second season.
