The Blessed Madonna (aka Marea Stamper) has linked up with Chicago house producer Jamie Principle for a collaborative new single titled ‘We Still Believe’.

It’s an old cut made new again with the help of Principle, with Stamper playing and recording the original some years back featuring her own warped voice. Pulsing with a deep undulating beat and playful electronic accents, the new version features Principle’s smooth vocals weaving across the song as he croons: “It doesn’t matter about your colour/your sexual identity/it’s just about being free/we still believe.”

Check it out below.

“I wrote and recorded a version of this alone in my attic over a decade ago, writing the lyrics on the back of a record sleeve and recording them into a blackberry under a blanket. I distorted my own vocals on the original, but imagined that the song would someday be performed by Jamie Principle, arguably the first real writer in house music and my hero,” Stamper said about the track in a press release.

“Jamie had recorded the original demos of ‘Waiting On My Angel’, ‘Your Love’ and so on as a teenager at home in the ‘80s. Later on they would be reengineered by Frankie Knuckles and company, becoming worldwide smashes and fundamental pieces of the story of Chicago house.

“Eventually, years later, Jamie and I met, sitting next to each other at Frankie’s memorial and we’ve been beloved friends ever since. “We Still Believe” never felt done correctly, so I bought the rights to it back. Jamie kindly agreed to re-record the song I wrote for him before I knew him and here we are, writing the next chapter together and doing it the way I imagined it all those years ago.”

‘We Still Believe’ marks Stamper’s first release of the year and follows on from her 2022 cut ‘Serotonin Moonbeams’. Back in 2021, she was sampled by friend and fellow producer Fred again.. for his lockdown-inspired pandemic anthem ‘Marea (we’ve lost dancing)’.

Stamper also released a remix album of Dua Lipa‘s ‘Future Nostalgia’ in 2020. Dubbed ‘Club Future Nostalgia’ the record featured reworked songs with MadonnaGwen StefaniMissy Elliott, Mark Ronson, Yaeji, Jayda G and more.

Speaking about the album in a four-star review, NME’s Hannah Mylrea wrote: “It was a savvy decision to recruit The Blessed Madonna: the result is a collection exciting, genre-splicing remixes that you could genuinely imagine hearing in the club. It may not have been the album celebration Lipa was planning, but ‘Club Future Nostalgia’ feels like a party all the same.”

Wilco to release alternate version of ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’ for Record Store Day

Only 4,500 copies of the vinyl will be made available through participating Record Store Day outlets

NME

Wilco are set to release an alternate version of their seminal album ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’ for this year’s Record Store Day.

Taking place on Saturday April 22, Record Store Day celebrates independent record stores around the world, giving fans the chance to buy special one-off collectable releases on vinyl, cassette and more.

Wilco will release the new version of their 2002 record on vinyl for the annual event, dubbing it ‘Crosseyed Strangers: An Alternate Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’. It will comprise live recordings of ‘Radio Cure’, ‘Jesus, Etc.’, ‘Heavy Metal Drummer’, ‘Pot Kettle Black’, ‘Poor Places’ and ‘Reservations’, as well as different versions of ‘War On War’ and ‘I’m The Man Who Loves You’.

Only 4,500 copies of the vinyl will be available for purchase through participating stores – search the directory here.

‘Crosseyed Strangers’ was originally compiled by the band last year for Uncut magazine, to coincide with the record’s 20th anniversary. It was released at the time as a bonus CD which came with the September 2022 issue of the magazine.

The band also released seven special versions of ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’ to mark its 20th anniversary last year, including a “Super Deluxe” set. The set comprised eleven vinyl records and a CD, with 82 previously unreleased tracks. It also included a book featuring interviews with frontman Jeff Tweedy, drummer Glenn Kotche and Jim O’Rourke, who mixed the album, as well as previously unseen photos of the recording process.

In addition to the reissues, the band also played six shows last April to commemorate the record. They performed the album in full across four dates in New York and two in Chicago, with the final night marking exactly 20 years to the date that the album was released.

The 20th anniversary reissue of ‘Yankee Foxtrot Hotel’ earned Wilco two Grammy awards earlier this month; one for Best Historical Album and one for Best Album Notes. The band have released eight albums since ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’ originally arrived, the most recent being last year’s ‘Cruel Country’.

In a four-star review, NME‘s Patrick Clarke wrote: “From the title track … what emerges is a fractured portrait of a complicated nation, one that offers no easy resolutions but remains, like America, endlessly compelling. If the best country music has always been about storytelling, then on ‘Cruel Country’ Wilco are delivering it in its purest form.”

Mahalia wore a ‘Long Live R&B’ jacket at the BRITs in response to lack of R&B artists at awards

“I just think it would be really powerful for R&B artists to have their own moment to shine,” she said

Mahalia showed her support for the R&B genre at this year’s BRIT Awards, showing up in a jacket emblazoned with “Long Live R&B”.

For the ceremony – held last night (February 12) – the Leicester-born singer sported a Burberry coat featuring artwork by Nigerian artist Olaolu Slawn. Her message at the event was clear, telling the BBC: “[R&B is] a genre I feel very passionate about and I don’t think it’s talked about enough.

“There’s an idea that American R&B artists can be commercially successful, and we [UK artists] can’t. That conversation needs to become more positive. I just think it would be really powerful for R&B artists to have their own moment to shine.”

Best Pop/R&B has been a combined category for the past two years (after the BRITs replaced gendered categories), and pop acts dominated this year’s nominations. Cat BurnsCharli XCXDua LipaHarry Styles and Sam Smith were all announced in the category, with Styles taking home the win.

It’s not the first time Mahalia has criticised the event for its lack of R&B representation. Taking to social media last month, she tweeted that she was “desperately searching for the R&B act at the BRITs” alongside a GIF of someone using their hands as binoculars.

“I’m sorry but UK R&B right now is THRIVING,” she said in a follow-up tweet, adding: “Forget putting us in this category. Give us our own!!!!! How many times do we have to scream at you? Winning awards isn’t the reason why we make and release music. We do this shit out of love. But, at this point, it’s nothing short of disrespectful.”

The BRITs 2021 decision to combine the R&B and Pop categories was met with criticism, as no R&B artists were announced as nominees despite it being a joint award. Mahalia was also vocal about her position on the move then, when Ed SheeranAdeleDua LipaGriff and Joy Crookes were unveiled as nominees for the 2022 BRITs.

“Putting pop and R&B in the same category is really nuts to me. And proves that the powers that be once again just do not get it,” she tweeted. “I love the Brits. I have since I was a kid. But as an R&B singer/songwriter, this feels completely unprogressive to the whole UK R&B scene.”

David “Trugoy The Dove” Jolicoeur from De La Soul has died, aged 54

A cause of death has not been revealed, however, the rapper had been suffering from congestive heart issues

David ‘Trugoy the Dove’ Jolicoeur – a founding member of hip-hop trio De La Soul – has died at the age of 54.

News of Jolicoeur’s death was first reported by AllHipHop yesterday (February 12) and has since been confirmed to multiple outlets including Rolling Stone. Details about the cause of his death have not been released, however the rapper had been suffering from several health issues in recent years.

Jolicoeur – also known as ‘Plug Two’ – had been candid about his congestive heart problem over the past few years. In the 2017 music video for ‘Royalty Capes’, the rapper announced he’d been diagnosed with the condition and showed how it prevented him from touring. “I’m ready to just get back on stage,” he said in the clip. “I miss it.” In 2020, he was briefly hospitalised for the condition.

Tributes to the hip-hop great have flooded in since news of his death broke. JPEGMAFIA and Kaytranada both took to Twitter to honour the rapper, with the former writing, “RIP TRUGOY of DE LA SOUL. A PIONEER!” while the latter posted: “RIP TRUGOY THE DOVE, PLUG TWO”.

Cypress Hill‘s B-Real also paid his respects, writing: “We lost another legend of hip hop music and culture in my brother Trugoy aka Dave of De La Soul. His music will allow him to live in our hearts and minds as he is gone. But not only was he a great musician but he was a great human being. He meant a lot to us.”

See more tributes below.

Jolicoeur and his high school friends Posdnuos and Maseo formed De La Soul in Amityville, Long Island, in 1988. The trio recorded a demo together titled ‘Plug Tunin’, which producer Prince Paul (Maseo’s neighbour) played for New York rap figures, landing the group a deal with Tommy Boy Records.

De La Soul released their debut album, ‘3 Feet High And Rising’, in 1989, featuring acclaimed singles ‘Eye Know’, ‘The Magic Number’ and ‘Me Myself And I’. The record was a commercial success and has been cited as influential by a number of artists, including Tyler, The Creator, Mos Def, Jurassic 5, Pharrell, and Damon Albarn, the lattermost of whom collaborated with Trugoy for Gorillaz‘ 2005 single ‘Feel Good Inc.’.

De La Soul went on to release eight more albums, three of which are currently on streaming platforms: 2004’s ‘The Grind Date’, 2012’s ‘First Serve’ and 2016’s ‘And The Anonymous Nobody…’.

This will expand in March to include their entire catalogue, including their aforementioned debut LP as well as 1991’s ‘De La Soul Is Dead’, 1993’s ‘Buhloone Mindstate’, 1996’s ‘Stakes Is High’, 2000’s ‘Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump’ and 2001’s ‘Art Official Intelligence: Bionix’.

The expansion of their digital offering comes after years of the group’s legal battles for their masters. De La Soul’s classic albums were initially withheld from streaming platforms due to a dispute with their label, Warner Records, who allegedly claimed that the samples featured on them were only cleared for physical media distribution.

In 2017, the trio’s catalogue was purchased by Tommy Boy Records and set for digital release, however, a dispute with the label over royalties further delayed this. In 2021, after Tommy Boy was acquired by Reservoir Media, De La Soul announced they’d come to an agreement that enabled them to digitally release their music (though the original timeline was for November that same year).

The hip-hop collective were set to tour the UK in April, however it is unclear whether the shows will still go ahead. De La Soul’s Posdnuos and Maseo recently performed at the Grammy awards as part of a hip-hop tribute co-curated by Questlove, though Jolicoeur was absent.

Caroline Polachek kicked off The Spiraling Tour in Brighton last week, debuting a number of new singles during the performance.

Taking to Brighton’s Chalk last Friday (February 10) with her new band, Polacheck gave punters a preview of new cuts set to appear on her forthcoming album ‘Desire, I Want To Turn Into You’. She performed songs called ‘Pretty In Possible’, ‘I Believe’, ‘Crude Drawing Of An Angel’, ‘Hopedrunk Everasking’ and ‘Fly To You’, the lattermost of which features Grimes and Dido on the studio recording.

She also gave ‘Butterfly Net’ and ‘Bunny Is A Rider’ their live debuts. Watch fan-shot footage from the night below.

Polachek’s forthcoming album ‘Desire, I Want To Turn Into You’ is due out digitally on Valentine’s Day (February 14). Physical copies of the LP will follow on April 14, and can be pre-ordered here.

A tracklist for ‘Desire, I Want To Turn Into You’ revealed that it will comprise the previously aforementioned cuts, as well as newly released singles ‘Blood And Butter’, ‘Welcome To My Island’, ‘Billions’ and ‘Sunset’.

The record will mark the follow-up to Polachek’s 2019 record ‘Pang’, which NME awarded four stars in a review. “The Chairlift singer has crystallised years of musical exploration (which included a Beyoncé co-write) into her innovative first solo record under her own name,” wrote NME‘s El Hunt.

Polachek’s Spiraling Tour will continue its UK leg with shows in London, Manchester and Bristol, before heading to Europe for a run of dates that wrap up in Antwerp on February 27. Tickets can be purchased here.

She’ll be returning to the UK later in the year for London’s Wide Awake festival, alongside Daniel AveryShygirl, Coucou Chloe, Blondeshell, Jockstrap, Joy Orbison and more. Find tickets here.

Last month, Polachek snapped back at comparisons to Kate Bush, saying she was “endlessly fucking annoyed” by them. Taking to Twitter, she wrote: “While I realise it’s a huge compliment, I’m endlessly fucking annoyed by being told I’m ‘this generation’s Kate Bush’. SHE is our generation’s Kate Bush, she is an active artist who’s topping the charts, and is irreplaceable.

“I, meanwhile, am this generation’s Caroline Polachek.”

Listen to Gengahr’s first single in two years, ‘A Ladder’

The band will be playing two intimate shows at The Waiting Room in London next month

The post Listen to Gengahr’s first single in two years, ‘A Ladder’ appeared first on NME.

NME

London band Gengahr are back with their first new music in two years, sharing new single ‘A Ladder’.

It’s an upbeat indie-pop cut which singer Felix Bushe describes as “a fun, trippy little song soaked in cartoon-like imagery.” “Essentially it’s about the power of true love and its ability to not only change the way we feel but also the way we see and interact with the whole world around us,” he said in a press statement.

It arrives alongside an accompanying music video directed by Billy Howard Price, which opens with a cartoon girl peering into a microscope, followed by fuzzed-out footage of the band dressed in lab coats and performing in various settings. Check it out below:

In addition to the new track, the band have announced they’ll be playing two intimate shows for fans at The Waiting Room in London, on Wednesday March 1 and Thursday March 2. Tickets go on sale today (February 10) and will be available to purchase here.

‘A Ladder’ arrives as the band’s first single since ‘Under The Skin’ in 2021, which they wrote for the American Gods season three soundtrack.

Their last album was 2020’s ‘Sanctuary’, which NME awarded three stars in a review upon its release. “‘Sanctuary’ works best when Gengahr push their usual parameters,” wrote NME’s Charlotte Krol.

“But hesitation remains in this regard, evidenced by some rather uninspired moments. Nonetheless it’s a worthy effort and one that surely sets them up for greater things to come.”

The Damned have revealed that a new album is on the way, titled ‘Darkadelic’.

Announced yesterday (February 3), the outfit marked the news by sharing a single from the forthcoming record, ‘The Invisible Man’. Staying true to their punk rock roots, the song opens with blazing drums and fuzzy guitars before changing pace about midway through. Here, they introduce gothic keys and erratic timings, with eerie vocals giving way to maniacal laughter.

The cut arrived alongside an accompanying music video, directed by British filmmaker Martin Gooch. It features clips of a scientist mixing potions in an appropriately dark laboratory, interspersed with the band performing in front of psychedelic visuals. There’s also a duo attempting to steal the apparent scientist’s secret documents. Check it out below.

‘Darkadelic’ will mark the band’s 12th studio album and follows on from 2018’s ‘Evil Spirits’. It is set for release on April 28 with preorders available here.

See the ‘Darkadelic’ tracklist below.

1. ‘The Invisible Man’

8. ‘Motorcycle Man’
9. ‘Girl I’ll Stop At Nothing’
10. ‘Leader Of The Gang’

Watch Taylor Swift’s new music video for ‘Lavender Haze’

The singer pays homage to the purple shade in her third ‘Midnights’ visual

The post Watch Taylor Swift’s new music video for ‘Lavender Haze’ appeared first on NME.

NME

Taylor Swift has shared the official music video for her ‘Midnights’ cut ‘Lavender Haze’, paying homage to the purple shade with dreamy visuals.

The singer shared a teaser for the track’s accompanying clip on social media yesterday (January 26), writing: “Meet me at midnight… for the Lavender Haze music video premiere (!!!!!!!!!!!!!)”.

Now, her self-directed video has arrived, featuring Swift in an array of purple-hued settings. These include dancing in violet smoke at a house party, swimming in a milky, lilac bath, floating on a cloud in a twinkling koi fish galaxy and crawling through wildflowers in her living room.

The clip also features a cameo from Laith Ashley De La Cruz, a transgender activist and actor, who plays Swift’s love interest. Watch it below.

It’s the third track off ‘Midnights’ to receive the music video treatment, following the clips for ‘Anti-Hero’ and ‘Bejeweled’ last year. The latter of the two featured Swift as Cinderella, with cameos from Laura Dern, the Haim sisters, Jack Antonoff, makeup artist Pat McGrath and model Dita Von Teese.

Upon the release of ‘Midnights’, Swift revealed that she’d created a series of “music movies” to accompany the record and that it would be a visual album. She shared a teaser trailer showing snippets of the videos to come, with other guest stars to include Mary Elizabeth Ellis, John Early and Mike Birbiglia.

The videos for ‘Midnights’ were created with cinematographer Rina Yang, who filmed Swift’s All Too Well short film from last year’s ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’. Starring Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) and Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner), it premiered in Manhattan before Swift then took it to New York’s Tribeca Film Festival, saying: “it would be fantastic to write and direct a feature”.

“I love storytelling, I love songwriting, I love writing videos, I love directing them,” Swift told The Hollywood Reporter last October. “I’m really proud of what we made and I really hope you like them.”

Speaking about ‘Midnights’ in a four-star review, NME‘s Hannah Mylrea wrote: “After a foray into a different sonic world, on Swift’s return to pure pop she still shimmers.”

Earlier this month, Swift surprised fans by appearing at The 1975‘s London show, where she gave a live debut of ‘Anti-Hero’ and covered the band’s own song ‘The City’. The outfit brought another musical guest along for their Newcastle show, Lewis Capaldi, who paid homage to their previous guest with a cover of Swift’s ‘Love Story’.

Tommy Lee attempted to comfort Pamela Anderson following ‘Pam & Tommy’ series

“I remember Tommy writing me a note saying, ‘Don’t let this hurt you like it did the first time,’” she said

The post Tommy Lee attempted to comfort Pamela Anderson following ‘Pam & Tommy’ series appeared first on NME.

NME

Pamela Anderson has said that her ex-husband, Mötley Crüe‘s Tommy Lee, attempted to comfort her after Hulu’s Pam & Tommy series aired.

The eight-episode show starred Lily James and Sebastian Stan as Pam and Tommy, but it was made without the consent of the famous actress. It centered around the couple’s tumultuous relationship and the scandal that erupted after their sex tape was stolen in 1995 and leaked — which Anderson has said caused her great psychological stress.

Speaking to Variety this week, the actress spoke candidly about her distaste for the program and its producers, describing them as “assholes”. She said their decision to follow through with the show felt like rubbing “salt on the wound” and it was difficult for her to relive the trauma during the show’s press cycle.

She revealed that Lee had reached out in an attempt to comfort her, saying: “I remember Tommy writing me a note saying, ‘Don’t let this hurt you like it did the first time,’ because he had heard through the kids that I was kind of struggling with the idea of bringing this all up again. I don’t think he was portrayed kindly. I just know that I refuse to watch it.”

Despite not watching the show, she said she’d seen billboards of James and Stan in character and that they “looked like a Halloween costume to me”.

However, she added that she had no hard feelings for the actors themselves, saying: “I think it’s hard to play somebody when you don’t know the whole picture. I’ve got nothing against Lily James. I think that she’s a beautiful girl and she was just doing the job. But the idea of the whole thing happening was just really crushing for me.”

Anderson also said she’d asked Netflix to invite James to the premiere of her forthcoming documentary Pamela, A Love Story, due out on January 31.

It comes after James revealed in January 2022 that she sent Anderson a letter, to which she’d never responded. “I was really hopeful that she would be involved,” James said at the time. “I wish it had been different.”

Speaking to The New York Times earlier this month, Anderson said that she had received the letter and refused to read it, instead scanning a copy and leaving it in her inbox.
