Back in May 2020, it was announced that OPETH frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt would score the upcoming Netflix series "Clark". The six-episode drama series about the Swedish criminal Clark Olofsson is being directed by Jonas Åkerlund. Production company is Scandinavian Content Group. Åkerfeldt discussed his involvement with "Clark" in a new interview with DREAM THEATER keyboardist Jordan Rudess. Asked if he has had a chance to work on any new music during the coronavirus pandemic, Mikael responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "Not for OPETH. In a way, I don't wanna come across as insensitive, but the pandemic hit at a good time for me, work-wise, because I've been offered to do a film score, basically, or for a series. The director is Jonas Åkerlund, who's mostly known for making music videos for Madonna and Lady Gaga. He has a past in heavy metal. He was in a band called BATHORY years ago. And he's a friend of mine. And he asked if I would be interested in scoring music for a TV series that's coming out on Netflix about a guy called Clark Olofsson, who was a famous, infamous robber, basically. So it's almost like a biopic. So I'm writing music that's supposed to fit in from the '40s and onwards. So that's been fun. So I've been doing that. I'm still kind of working on that." Regarding his approach to writing the "Clark" score, Mikael said: "In the beginning, I didn't wanna do much vocals, but I've done some vocals. He sent me the script, and I read through [it]. But he basically told me, 'Just write music like you normally do.' And that's what I did, only shorter pieces — like three-minute pieces. You don't wanna spend time working on a 20-minute piece and then he goes, 'That sucks.' So I'm just doing shorter things. But it's been really fun. And I think I've learned a lot. I had to kind of school myself in music, how it sounded in different decades and so forth… Some stuff is kind of OPETH-y sounding, I guess, and some stuff is definitely not OPETH-y sounding. But it's been really fun. And some what I think are really nice things I'm almost hoping it's not gonna be used, so I could take it for OPETH." Asked if did any scoring to picture, Mikael said: "I haven't scored to picture. I would love to do that. But this is the first time I've done anything like this. So I'm just basically writing things and sending it to him. And then we'll see what happens." Åkerfeldt went on to reiterate that the lockdown happened at a good time for him professionally. "Yeah, I'm afraid to say," he said. "Yeah, it was good. I wouldn't have had time [to work on the score] otherwise. I've been keeping busy working almost every day since March 2020." Olofsson will be portrayed by Bill Skarsgård, who is best known for his terrorizing and iconic portrayal of Pennywise in the Stephen King saga "It". Last year, he starred in the Netflix film "The Devil All The Time" and in the Sundance hit "Nine Days" for Sony Pictures Classic. On television, Skarsgård most recently starred in Hulu's "Castle Rock", a psychological drama series from J.J. Abrams and Stephen King. Based on the truth and lies of Olofsson's autobiography, the Swedish-language series will feature Clark's early years until present day. The notorious gangster started his criminal career in the 1960s and became one of the most controversial personalities in contemporary Swedish history. Convicted of several counts of drug trafficking, attempted murder, assault, theft and dozens of bank robberies, he has spent more than half his life behind bars and has left behind a trail of trauma, heartbreak, disappointment and general devastation. In the 1970s, Clark gave rise to the idea of "The Stockholm Syndrome" during a failed bank robbery in Stockholm — and has ever since kept his position as celebrity criminal fooling all of Sweden to fall in love with him. Just like he desired. Åkerlund said: "'Clark' is the story about the most politically incorrect man, who lived the most politically incorrect life. These are the kinds of stories I always look for. It's an ultra-violent, witty, emotional, real and surreal biography to put a face to the name Stockholm Syndrome, but it isn't just about the Norrmalmstorg Robbery. It's about his whole life and what made him who he is, the truth and lies of his incredible career. Bill Skarsgård is the perfect match for this and he will bring the Stockholm Syndrome to the role. And Netflix is the perfect platform, they are not just the biggest streaming service, they also have the boldness to tell this incredible story." Added Skarsgård: "Clark Olofsson is, for good and bad, one of Sweden's most colourful and fascinating individuals. I accept this challenge with delight mingled with terror and think that with Jonas and Netflix in the back, we can tell a groundbreaking story with a pace and madness we may not have seen on TV before. Clark's life and history is so incredible and screwed that it would even make Scorsese blush." Tesha Crawford, director of International Originals Northern Europe at Netflix, said: "We really look forward to continuing our great collaboration with Jonas Åkerlund and Bill Skarsgård. We can not imagine a better team to tell the complex story about Clark Olofsson and how he became one of the most controversial personalities in modern Swedish times."

Billie Eilish reveals conflict when writing song, ‘Getting Older’

Eilish spoke about the song in a new interview

Billie Eilish has opened up about the conflict she experienced when writing song ‘Getting Older’.

The song, which is taken from Eilish’s upcoming new album, ‘Happier Than Ever’, hints at previous trauma.

“I’ve had some trauma / Did things I didn’t wanna / Was too afraid to tell ya / But now I think it’s time,” Eilish sings on the last line of the song.

Speaking to the LA Times, Eilish said she was conflicted about the song saying she wanted her fans to “know everything about my life somehow” but that she wasn’t able to talk about the song’s meaning any further.

Eilish said: “I have experienced some stuff that I have never spoken about, and I don’t want to at all…I don’t want to f—ing talk about it.

“I don’t want to tell anyone, let alone the entire internet. It’s embarrassing to go through stuff like that. It’s why a lot of women and men — but especially women — don’t tell anyone when they’re going through it.”

She continued: “But at the same time…even though I haven’t really done anything for [the #MeToo movement], it’s really important that young women know that it can happen to anyone. Just being taken advantage of.”

Earlier this year, an intimate documentary about Eilish was released on Apple TV+. In its five-star review, NME called Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry a “searingly honest documentary offers a warts-and-all look at life as a young megastar.”

Sony files a third trademark update for ‘PlayStation Home’

Could the social platform make a come back?

The post Sony files a third trademark update for ‘PlayStation Home’ appeared first on NME.

NME

Sony has filed its third trademark update for PlayStation Home so far in 2021, sparking rumours the social space could make a comeback.

Sony updated the trademark earlier this week (July 21), adding a new document labelled “Information to proprietors of earlier trade mark registrations or applications”. The first trademark update was made three months ago, along with a second update last month.

The trademark also involves developers of PlayStation Home, London Studio and its Soho Engine, which it built the game in.

Reddit user Thorites initially spotted the updates, noting each trademark filing with a thread on Reddit. Thorites believes Sony is working on something involving PlayStation Home, and that it might be looking to bring the service back for the upcoming PSVR 2.

Social VR games have grown in popularity in recent years, as apps like VR Chat and Rec Room provide players with an almost limitless world in which to interact. It could be that Sony aims to introduce a similar app to PSVR 2, and will use PlayStation Home to do so.

The trademark filing could also mean nothing. Businesses regularly update trademarks, even on properties that aren’t actively in development. It could simply be that Sony is future-proofing the trademark for PlayStation Home.

However, trademark updates like this in the past have led to announcements. Microsoft updated the Fable trademark two-weeks ahead of announcing a reboot of the series at the Xbox Games Showcase last year.

In other news, according to the creative director of the upcoming Dead Space remake, the team could incorporate content cut from the original game. The remake could also feature new story elements, inspired by games and content released after the original title.

When speaking about the original the director said “What’s funny is that you can see some of the iterations that were made prior to ship by the team. In the first chapter, you can see some corridors that they wanted to do first in a certain way, and then you can understand why they changed it for technical constraints.”

Launched in 2010 and created by modder trancemaster_1998, Morrowind Rebirth aims to completely overhaul and expand the original game. It started as the “New Cities Project” and slowly expanded, so trancemaster_1998 “decided to take it a step further.”

A description of the mod says players can “explore the island of Vvardenfell as you never have before, with a world built anew to be both alien and familiar to the Morrowind you knew before.”

“New adventures await, with new exciting areas to see and explore, and new artifacts just waiting to be discovered. Experience the world of Morrowind in a new light, try out Morrowind Rebirth today!” it concludes.

In other news, the release date for the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Siege Of Paris DLC may have leaked thanks to a Windows storefront. The date was quickly removed after being spotted on Twitter.

The downloadable content could potentially release on August 5, with Ubisoft’s official release window still saying the DLC will release during ‘Summer 2021’. In the DLC players will “infiltrate the fortified city of Paris and the River Seine under a prolonged siege, uncover enemy secrets, and form strategic alliances to safeguard their clan’s future.”

‘Dead Space’ remake could restore cut content from original game

The developer also wants to improve the story

The post ‘Dead Space’ remake could restore cut content from original game appeared first on NME.

NME

The upcoming Dead Space remake could restore content cut from the original game, according to the game’s creative director.

EA confirmed the existence of the rumoured Dead Space remake earlier this week at EA Play. Speaking with IGN, creative director Roman Campos-Oriola spoke about the remake and how the team is approaching its development. “We started with the original level design of the original Dead Space”, commented Campos-Oriola.

“What’s funny is that you can see some of the iterations that were made prior to ship by the team. In the first chapter, you can see some corridors that they wanted to do first in a certain way, and then you can understand why they changed it for technical constraints.”

Beyond cut content, the team is also planning to change Dead Space’s story, incorporating elements of the narrative from Dead Space 2 and content from additional formats. Campos-Oriola was keen to point out that the changes would not take from the story, but embellish the remake with details that better link it to future content.

“We’re doing it from a narrative standpoint, but we’re also looking at it from a feature standpoint in the improvements and some of the content that evolved throughout the franchise,” added Campos-Oriola.

The creative director touched on several topics in the interview, including how the team will use the latest technology to improve immersion and build on game mechanics. He also wants to add a number of accessibility options to the remake, to open the game up to a “broader set of people”.

The Dead Space remake is expected to launch some time in 2023, although the game is still early in development, so it is more of a general assumption than a confirmed release window.

Microsoft may have accidentally revealed the launch date for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Paris DLC because of a listing on the Windows store. According to the now deleted listing, the Paris DLC may release August 5.

BLABBERMOUTH.NET

Drummer Bernhard Welz has just announced a new performance of Jon Lord's "Concerto For Group And Orchestra" in Győr, Hungary on November 5, 2021. Adding DEEP PURPLE tracks, the concert will be performed by the Győr Symphony Orchestra together with: * Bruce Dickinson (IRON MAIDEN) - vocals * Roger Glover (DEEP PURPLE) - bass * Kaitner Z Doka (JON LORD, IAN PAICE, DON AIREY) - guitar * Bernhard Welz (JON LORD, DON AIREY) - drums Also appearing at the event will be conductor Paul Mann, a close friend of Jon's. Tickets will go on sale next week. In November 2019, Bruce performed at the Palais Montcalm in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada as part of the 50th-anniversary celebration of "Concerto For Group And Orchestra". Joining him at the event were Mann, the Quebec Symphony Orchestra (QSQ) and the PAUL DESLAURIERS BAND. When the Quebec City concert was first announced, Dickinson said: "It's a great honor to participate in the 50th anniversary of the 'Concerto For Group And Orchestra'. When Paul Mann contacted me about the Quebec event, I said yes immediately. "As many people know, DEEP PURPLE have been a major, ongoing influence in my life since I was a teenager, and down the years, I have been fortunate enough to become good friends with all of the band, most especially in my collaborations with Jon Lord. "[I] am looking forward to seeing everyone at this very special commemorative evening." Added Mann: "My long collaboration with Jon Lord, and in particular his innovative, genre-defying 'Concerto', has been one of the greatest joys of my musical life. I look forward to bringing this piece to Canada for the first time on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary. Jon's spirit will definitely be with us." After the November 21, 2019 concert went on sale in April of that year, it sold out immediately and a second show — on November 22, 2019 — was added. During a September 2018 spoken-word gig in Copenhagen, Denmark, Dickinson was asked about his relationship with Lord. He responded: "Jon Lord was a wonderful gentleman, and we were close friends. And he sadly died of… He had pancreatic cancer, but he survived for a year and a half — much against what everybody had said would happen. And actually, at the end, he didn't die of pancreatic cancer — he died, unfortunately, of some terrible blood collapse that happened with him, possibly as a result of treatment. But we had all kinds of crazy plans, including me going out on tour with him, singing DEEP PURPLE songs with an orchestra, which he was planning to do; that was one of the things we were planning to do. But it all got interrupted and canceled, and [it was] obviously very sad. He was a wonderful man." Lord died on July 16, 2012 at age 71 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Lord, who was known for his keyboard virtuosity and his reinvention of the Hammond B-3 organ sound, co-wrote such PURPLE classics as "Smoke On The Water" and "Child In Time", among others. Lord and drummer Ian Paice were the only original members to last through the band's initial run from 1968 to 1976. He was on board for their 1984 reunion and stayed on through to his 2002 retirement from the band, after which he worked primarily in the classical field.

Listen to Bryson Tiller’s soul-stirring new track ‘One Sided’

The singer is currently putting the final touches on his three-volume album, ‘Serenity’

Bryson Tiller has dropped off a surprise new track, ‘One Sided’ – you can listen to it below.

The Louisville R&B star’s latest track, which is produced by 30Roc, Bass Charity, Hue Strother and DaBlackMic, follows the release of last year’s ‘Anniversary’, Tiller’s third studio album.

Nurturing a broken heart, Tiller sings: “I don’t wanna make no scene, but yes I’m hurting (I’m really hurting now)/ If he swear you wanna be, I guess you deserve him (yes, you deserve him)/ And you don’t need no stress from me, I guess/ I should just leavе, I guess.

Opting to not put the track out on major streaming platforms, Tiller released ‘One Sided’ via Soundcloud. You can listen to it below.

Tiller is currently busy at work on his next album, ‘Serenity’. In February, the singer revealed that the project will be a triple disc effort: one rap disc, one R&B disc, and one pop disc.

“I started it a long-ass time ago,” Tiller explained during an Instagram Live. “Like, before ‘True To Self’, but I wasn’t in the right headspace to make it. Then after ‘True To Self’, you know, I was depressed and shit; I had some shit going on in my life. Actually, I was depressed before that, but still was a little depressed after that even more because of different shit.

“So I started up ‘Serenity’ again because I was at a better place in my life; I was feeling better about shit…then over years I realised how much fucking music I had for ‘Serenity’ – all these different shits. So ‘Serenity’ is now, it’s not one album, it’s three albums.”

Earlier this year, Ty Dolla $ign and Jhené Aiko teamed up with Bryson Tiller for a remix of their 2020 collaboration ‘By Yourself’.
